Self harm will never be a healthy coping skill
Yes. I said it. I am a survivor of this and I’m going to tell you the bloody fucking truth.
After talking with someone who is absolutely convinced they’re doing nothing wrong and they “know what they’re doing,” I need to make this.
It will not only leave bodily scars but it will leave an even bigger mental scar:
The constant lies you tell when you self harm. The “I’m fine,” “I was on my phone in the bathroom,” the “I’m taking a long bath, my back hurts.” No, you weren’t on your phone. No, you didn’t take that long bath to relax.No. Just no. You lied. This is a constant battle you fight, with others and yourself. It makes you sneaky, it makes you slicker than an oiled eel. You become savvy, how you can hide this, show that. You distort your own reality that all is peachy when you’re making crude bandages with tape and toilet paper in your grandmother’s bathroom. You walk out without a care, say you were fixing your hair and you were doing this or that. Lying becomes so easy.
No, not like that. It makes you hungry for more pain. It’s an addiction. The only reason i kicked it is because I threw away my stuff and cant bring myself to lie about being clean. 6 months baby. Soon to be 7. I’m still hungry for it, still wanting it, still wanting to give in to my addiction. It is such a hard battle and i don’t want this for anyone. This notion that it is healthy is only hurting us even more, please stop telling others and yourself that it is healthy. Drugs are not healthy, they never will be. Feeding your addiction is never ever healthy.
It makes your issues worse/Everything is a trigger
Now you have to deal with outer wounds. You always know they’re there, sitting there, bloody or finally healing up. For those who take longer to heal, it can take 2 months to heal all the way even when they’re just surface cuts. Seeing cuts on another person is the worst. If you’re like me, you’re the first to doctor someone’s wound. Even if their hand slipped with the kitchen knife and they sliced their hand by accident. It makes you think back to hurting yourself. You want to help them but the first thought that comes to mind is hurting yourself just like that. Seeing medical images shared on FB that look a little too similar to what you did. Even watching the horror movies you love can be hard.
If you have dogs, it hurts to have them jump on you. It hurts to wear those favorite skinny jeans because they rub against the healing wounds. It hurts to swing your leg over your horse when you get on. All you want to do it hurt yourself, no matter what. You wanna cut up stuff in the kitchen? Lol. You want to sew? Have fun having intrusive thoughts when your needle pricks you.
What Im saying is that it RUINS YOU. You may recover but things will never be the same. Don’t get deep into this. Don’t start. Don’t even do it once. The first time is a choice. The second time is not.
