Thinking about the ableism directed at Berdly

(assorted thoughts. was originally going to be a reblog before I realized it would be railroading the original post)

This kid is one heck of a win for autistic rep that ISN'T infantalized or their disability is convenient for everyone around them!

He's a bit annoying as all teenagers are. He can't read the room all the time, he misinterprets what people mean (especially if they don't say what they mean, which is a big reason for the misunderstanding between him and Noelle), etc-

The second you GIVE Berdly a boundary, he wholeheartedly accepts it and follows it. Incels DON'T do that. He just doesn't always understand when he's making others uncomfortable, especially if they're doing everything BUT being direct about it.

I've seen people legitimately wish death upon this teenaged boy just because he makes situations awkward sometimes. Thanks fandom gang thats??? super invalidating and messed up, actually??? I feel so safe and welcome /sarc

I think the problem is that the fandom is made up of a range of 13yos to adults, which means a good chunk of the fandom just doesn't have as good critical thinking skills as some others. (this isn't inherently age-based. I know a lot of really thoughtless adults and really thoughtful teenagers. But immaturity does play a part in some cases)

And also like. Media illiteracy epidemic. And also ableism in general.

I’ve seen a lot of people theorizing that Ralsei is trans fem (for compelling reasons) but let me propose an alternative: Ralsei is genderfluid

1. They don’t seem really uncomfortable with being referred to as a boy or assuming that role and they’re not insecure about it either.

2. Ralsei seems to enjoy changing shape? Whether it’s being a plush or a horse they kinda seem to like it? Makes me think that they might have a similar relation to their gender identity where they could like being prince to princess to monarch(I couldn’t find a better word) interchangeably.

3. "I suppose the only difference is how you present yourself" no matter the role Ralsei assumes they still feel like Ralsei

4. Genderfluid. Darkness is associated with water. Ralsei is a darkner. PUN PUN WINK WINK

5. That’s more theory talk but if Ralsei was shaped from a closeted Kris imagination or something like that, that would add on to the genderqueerness of it all

Just gonna rant a little about the TADC theatrical release.

If you, in the past few hours, have said something to the effect of "they should reconsider doing this" SHUT THE FUCK UP!

"I can't make it to the theater!" Shut the fuck up.

"They're betraying their fans!" SHUT THE FUCK UP!

"They're not showing it in my country!" Call your local theater! Request it!! THEN SHUT UP!!!

"I'm gonna get spoiled before it comes out on youtube!" I have met people that don't know Darth Vadar is Luke Skywalker's father. SHUT. UP.

I have never seen a fanbase so bitter and disrespectful to their property seeing enough success to warrant a theatrical screening. ESPECIALLY an independent production that would not be here without you.

The final episode releasing in theaters is not here to bar you from the ending, it is to celebrate the ending. If you genuinely think that you personally not being able to see this in theaters means that EVERYONE ELSE should be barred from experiencing it with a massive screen, surrounded by other community members, for a big eventful ending, you are nothing short of selfish. Stop bitching and soiling the extremely exciting news for everyone else.

"But spoilers!!" BLOCK TAGS. BLACKOUT YOUR INTERNET USE. IF THIS MATTERS TO YOU THIS MUCH PUT IN EVEN THE SLIGHTEST AMOUNT OF EFFORT TO AVOID SPOILERS.

You know what other media gets delayed from being fully accessible when they hit theaters? MOST MOVIES. Currently releasing films aren't going to be available online for MONTHS. Smaller film releases will drag their feet being available in other countries. Films like Iron Lung aren't avilable to view ANYWHERE right now after its theatrical release ended. This is a very normal thing for media franchises to do. Conventions preview upcoming episodes or seasons of shows months early, bands play exclusive versions of their songs at concerts, directors cuts of movies are only available if you buy the dvd. TV shows that everyone is talking about are streaming on services you don't have access to. Not every piece of media is going to be readily accessible to you. Even if it's from a series or creator you like.

I want everyone to be able to have that experience but it's just not feasible. I am beyond proud of Gooseworx and GLITCH for having so much support that this is even possible and I hope the people that can enjoy that experience do. All I ask of the people that are getting tickets is to tag throughly and yap responsibly in that 2 week window before the episode releases on youtube. The rest of us may be disappointed but as someone who had to wait nearly a year for the third MHA movie to be globally accessible after I saw it in theaters, you can handle this. You won't even remember there was a problem by June 21st.

This is happening because TADC is a show that is immensely loved and I'm sure the creative team is beyond excited that they get to show the result of their creative endeavors in global theater chains. Be happy for them. This is an insanely big opportunity. It's the least you can do for how much they've given you through this series.
