Ideally a circular economy for our products, such as clothing, would help to reduce massive waste and chemical contamination.

When materials are able to be reused, refurbished and recycled by the provider and manufacturer, the valuable resources that are these materials can avoid going to the landfill.

Everyone there wants to do good work. Critiques are run well, and they’re never personal—they’re objective. Everyone feels heard. There’s a nice balance between collaboration and being inclusive on a process, but also sharing ideas.

There needs to be stability and growth, and people need to be constantly learning and know that it’s okay to fail publicly. Egos are checked at the door, and we do a great job here not hiring egotistical maniacs. At the same time, we do a good job of not hiring delicate geniuses who may be super sensitive. A lot of design organizations will throw a big salary at a rockstar designer. But it’s all about the chemistry of the team. Sometimes that rockstar will come in, and because they’re a delicate genius, they can’t collaborate. To me, that’s just half a designer.

What happens when you have a demanding client who offers you a lot of money? Do you still take the job? Why or why not?

I know of many agencies who have engaged in that compromise, and they are feeling the effects, ending up with well-paid but shit work and poor client relationships. That saps any studio’s life force. We’ve ended multimillion dollar engagements because we did not believe the relationship or work was healthy for us.
