A smile rested on Estelle’s cheeks, much more genuine than that which she used with normal customers as opposed to Liliane, who she would consider a close friend. “Teal will look stunning on you Lil,” Estelle said summoning several robes in teal colors towards a dressing room. “So this one has flared sleeves for extra drama, whereas this one is a bit more simple but embellished - it’s one of my favorites in the whole store - on the shoulders, and this one is just all over teal but it lays beautifully and it’s one-of-a-kind. Thoughts?”
“Thank you, Estelle,” she said with a pleased smile. Flattery was always welcome, especially when it was genuine. “They all look so lovely!” Though she had rejected her family’s lifestyle, it was difficult to overcome nearly twenty years of indulgence, and she still had a taste for beautiful things so the dress robes were no exception. “I love the embellishment on this one.” Reaching out, she fingered the shoulder of the second one momentarily, eyes sparkling in pleasure.

for all those who knew alex were more than aware of his extroverted nature. recently however, he had been isolating himself without meaning to, mainly because he finds that his drive and passion for his work more or less overrides his desire to socialise. there comes a point though, like all extroverts, that the introversion that he’s pushing onto himself has made him feel … suffocated, to say the least. alex liked liliane; she was a good healer and a good person, so there really wasn’t any reason why he couldn’t release some of that pent up energy by interacting with her. “great!” he exclaimed in return, taking the packet of food and throwing it into the nearest bin behind him. after gathering his small pile of paperwork into a clumsy pile, alex gestured for her to follow as he made his way around the table and out of the staff room.
“you handling everything okay?” was the first question. perhaps because his subconscious knew that despite what he may try and convince himself, he was doing far from dealing with the work load in a healthy way. “lots of people are getting wheeled in recently. kind of worrying, don’t you think?”
She gathered her own things and followed Alex, glad for the chance to escape into the fresh air. Liliane had come to learn how very important she found fresh air, sunshine, greenery - especially after she and Luc had started living together. It was like he had started to rub off on her in little ways, which shouldn’t come as such a surprise to her. “I like to think I am,” she said thoughtfully, brushing a strand of hair out of her face. “It certainly is worrying and I hate to see so many new patients coming in. It’s escalating . . .” Her voice trailed off as a frown crossed her lips. She didn’t like the direction the world seemed to be going at the moment, but felt rather at a loss to change anything.
“What about you?” Her gaze moved from the path in front of them to his face briefly, concern flickering in her eyes. It wasn’t always easy for her to read other people, but she had the feeling that everyone was feeling the pressure now.

“Different? Stepping out of your all black ensemble for a wild night, are we?” She giggled and walked towards the more colorful section. “We have every color. For you I’d suggest either a deep red or something like… teal. Is it for a special occasion?”
“I thought I might be a little more adventurous. Of course, I might change my mind and go back to the usual.” Laughing as well, she followed Estelle and glanced around the selections appreciatively. The colors appealed to her, and she nodded with a thoughtful expression. “Oh, either one of those would be lovely. Perhaps teal? It’s nto for anything specific, but I haven’t updated my dress robes since - oh, shortly after I finished at Hogwarts, I think.”

Luc, unlike Liliane, generally had consistently good days. There weren’t many life-threatening emergencies to be found at a florist’s, after all, though there would occasionally be things Luc found to be extreme emergencies, such as getting the perfect flowers to a desperate man on shaking legs and the fear of losing his true love in his eyes. (Perhaps Luc was a bit of a romantic, but he felt like it came with the territory: French and a florist? He didn’t have a chance.)
He was smiling to himself, thinking of his day at work and whistling jauntily as he put some white peonies in a vase, when he heard a voice calling out his name, and his smile instantly widened. “Lili,” he called back, “ma chérie, how was your day?” Such joy he took from being able to ask her such a simple question, nothing more to stand in their way.
She followed the sound of his voice, her smile growing ever larger as she did, and when her eyes landed on him, a soft sigh escaped. This was all she had wanted, and if this was all she ever had, she would be a happy woman. “It was long, but not bad,” she said after a moment of thought. Walking to join him, she slipped an arm around his waist for a hug and reached to touch one of the peonies with a finger. “They’re lovely, Luc. How was your day?”
These sort of mundane niceties hadn’t been present in her childhood home - or, rather, they hadn’t been so genuine there. Her parents inquired after the other’s day, of course, but in a perfunctory, aloof manner. It was so different with Luc; sometimes she thought about what her life would have been like had she not found her courage, and she knew that whatever part of her made her herself would have been completely squelched in that atmosphere.

as soon as liliane took a seat, alex forced himself to looking up and smile a little. liliane was always a gentle soul and so he always felt like he had to treat her with the same amount of gentleness. plus he knew her at hogwarts and even though she was at least a year older than him, the affections he had towards his housemates never really faded. “hmm,” alex hummed in agreement, giving side eyes to the group of babbling mediwitches and wizards gathered around a table nearby. “want to join me outside? it’s getting stuffy in here.”
She flashed a tired smile when their eyes met; although Liliane didn’t really have many close friends - she had never been a very social person, although she liked to think she was becoming more so now - she had always thought Alexander was a nice boy, and he had grown into a good man. And here, anyway, he was someone she felt comfortable around, which was always nice. “Oh, I’d like that. Fresh air always does me good.”

—– “If you’re ever in need of some good reading material,” Hestia started. “I highly recommend this month’s issue of Hourglass. There’s a very interesting article on the Witch burnings in the fourteenth century., which is definitely worth a read. It talks about the injustice women — especially muggle women — faced and the nature of it all, rather than how actual witches dealt with it. It’s just a very refreshing – and important – take on it all.”
“Oh, that actually does sound interesting. Is it in the waiting room, and do you think I could sneak it out to read on my break later?” Though she had left Hogwarts behind, Liliane hadn’t lost her pleasure in informative reading and that particular topic did sound quite fascinating. “I don’t think I’ve ever read anything with that particular slant on the witch burnings.”
arobns:
“hey i’m sorry, do you mind keeping it down? i’m kind of on my lunch break plus i’ve got all this paperwork …”
“I was about to ask the same thing,” Liliane said as she sat in a nearby empty chair. “It’s always so noisy, and I just want a little peace on my break.”
stvrfvll:
“Oh of course not Lil!” She said with a big smile. “It’s so good to see you! Yes I’m so glad you came! What kind are you thinking?”
“I hadn’t thought about it very much, actually. Something . . . different.” She’d had her fill of traditional black dress robes; she didn’t actually wear them very often now, but it was always good to have an option. “What sort of colors do you have?”
@lucdevereux
To be quite honest, Liliane still found herself a bit stunned when she remembered that she and Luc were together; she wasn’t under her parents’ thumbs anymore and she had her own life. So it was extremely rare for her to step into their flat without a smile on her face, no matter what sort of day she had faced at St. Mungo’s. And this was no exception, as she shut the door behind her and called out, “Luc? I’m home!”
stvrfvll:
“Always had this habit,” Estelle mumbled to herself, stocking shelves and pulling her fingers away from her lips before turning around as she heard footsteps. “Sorry, can I help you?”
“Oh, I hope I’m not interrupting, Estelle,” Liliane said as she approached the other witch. “I’m just looking for dress robes, and I knew this would be the best place to come.”
I take much pleasure in being alone, but there is also a strange warm grace in not being alone.
