jacqueline kennedy and jfk jr, squaw island, 1963
in the fall of 1937, at harvard, jack sets his sights on joining one of the most exclusive social clubs, called the spee club. it had refused admission to both his father and joe jr. it was difficult during this time due to the anti-irish sentiments in boston, especially in harvard clubs, which were mostly made up of old wasp families that didn’t look at the kennedys as exactly the most desirable of entrants.
but jack has a well placed friend on his side, camman newberry, a harvard law student.
camman newberry was on the committee to choose new members of the spee club. he became great friends with jack, as he was with two of jack’s great friends, billy coleman and jimmy rousmaniere. the three of them all went in together and forced the hand, because coleman and rousmaniere had impeccable credentials.
newberry would also take the home movies that today serve as a rare record of jack’s college years. newberry felt deeply about letting jack into the spee club.
it was very important for jack in a number of ways. they served three meals a day, as jack was thin at that time and did not feed himself as well. once he became a member, the club put in a special ice cream machine just for him.
in the fall of 1938, while their father was serving as united states ambassador to great britain, bobby and teddy are shown elite schools.
“Growing up at Hickory Hill, my father was fully engaged with us, always fair and so much fun.
One day, playing in the tree outside our house, my brother Michael chucked a magnolia pod at me one too many times. I burst into my father's study, tears streaming down my face. He called Michael in, asked me to tell him exactly what happened, and then asked Michael to do the same.
It was irritating listening to Michael’s side of the story, but it made me realize I was not all right, and he was not all wrong. Then Daddy made us kiss, make up, and go to our rooms to read for an hour.
The message he had for two kids standing in that study is the message he had for our country: "We need to stop regarding our adversaries as enemies, but realize they are our brothers and sisters. Peace is not just something you pray for, it's something you're responsible for creating, and educate yourself.”
That's the kind of father he was. The way he conducted himself in his most private life is the way he conducted himself in public. Full of wit, grace, compassion, and moral imagination.
Happy Father's Day, Daddy. Miss you every day.”

Kerry Kennedy's tribute to her father on 6/6/2026, the 58th anniversary of his death
My father dedicated himself to the cause of justice. He stood with the people, all people, and he refused to accept that the way things were was the way they had to stay. He carried titles that history remembers, but the ones he held closest were that of husband and father. What I miss most is not the public man. It is the one who came home at the end of a long day, who wanted to know what we thought and why, who pushed us to be curious, generous, and unafraid of hard questions. Daddy did not lecture us about his values. He lived them, and that is how they became ours. I think of him often now, when so much of what he believed in and worked to uphold is being trampled by those in power. His legacy of championing justice, democracy, and freedom has been passed to each of us.
on this day, robert f. kennedy was murdered, and left behind ten children, and his wife, ethel, who was pregnant with their eleventh and final child, rory, who would never get to know her father.
what was lost was not only a life, but a future. the promise of an american dream cut short. at a time when hope still hung in the air, robert f. kennedy embodied the belief of unity and change were possible, and that america could be better than it was.
