The Nexus of Art and Science
As time and time goes on, and technology begins to evolve exponentially, art seemingly develops with every new invention. From art created with lasers to virtual art galleries, technology is able to influence art to a whole new dimension. However, there is a flip side of this as well. Technology can seemingly get influenced by the arts. There are many examples in real life that showcase this concept. Movies and even games can especially inspire people and in result, these technologies are made or are getting ready to be created. Visual Arts such as Back to the Future, Soma, and Detroit Become Human contain so many ideas and concepts of science that many people desire to see happen. With the great minds of the century, there are certainly some ideas that are able to come to fruition, and some still in progress. However, with technology rapidly advancing in many ways than possible, there are many potential repercussions to these discoveries as well.
Back to the Future was a pretty old movie made in 1985 that showed a possibility of the world with flying cars, holograms, hoverboards, etc. There were many ideas that stemmed from this movie. Holograms in the movie are created and put to use now for special effects in plays, amusement parks, or even used to create more art. Hoverboards in the movie inspired people to make something similar. Even if the hoverboards we have now donât actually hover, it is an invention that gained much support when it first came out. However, with any great invention there is always some sort of debate with ethics. For example, the hoverboards that were not created well would explode which introduced many problems of whether it was the companiesâ fault or if it was simply the customerâs fault for toying around with this sort of technology. While hoverboards deal with many physical injuries and blame, holograms have a legal problems. There is much debate on the idea of remaking concerts with departed celebrities, by using holograms. If anyone were to use holograms to recreate past celebritiesâ concerts, legal issues deciding who get the rights to showcase these concerts become a problem. While Back to the Future illustrates the technology that has already been made, there are other visual arts that illustrate the science and technology that is in progress, as well as the many problems that can develop through it.
Detroit Become Human is a game that focuses on Androids that develop a conscious and revolt against the people that have been mistreating them. This game focuses on artificial intelligence, which is a technology that exists; however, not to the extent of what is seen in this game. The technology that we have right now, in comparison to the androids in the game is simply the system that we use so often: our phone. The artificial intelligence that we have are systems like Siri or Alexa. The androids in the game also are a potential goal of the scientists and engineers that work on robots. Even if they are simple robots that only listen to simple commands as of the present; if they were ever paired together with AI systems, there is a high possibility that the concept of Androids in the game would be created in real life. And with this new invention that could potentially be developed, it could be misused. Dehumanization would happen, because the Androids may look so similar to humans. People would lose jobs like they always have whenever technology breaks the market. Many issues would be faced if the androids were to develop a conscious.
Finally, there is the game Soma. Soma delves into the concept of brain scans and the copying and pasting of oneâs consciousness. This is a concept that has already been taken into consideration and being researched about. A paper called, âWhole Brain Emulationâ has already been written about it. Imagine if one could potentially âliveâ on forever through the copying and pasting of their consciousness and mind? And in the case of a catastrophic event, if uploading brains could potentially save our species, it would be a wonderful invention. However, even if there is much potential from the development of this concept, this type of science delves deep into the moral aspects of our species as a whole. Many arguments were made, using this as a key point. Even the game itself deals with this concept. If brain emulation becomes real, what would life be considered as? If we are taking into the account of living in a virtual reality, would we still be considered as âhumanâ? What would culture be considered as? Much debate can be made as we progress and discover more about this idea.
Technology and science are heavily influenced by visual arts. Whether they are as simple as a hoverboard or as deeply debatable as brain emulation, there is no doubt that inspiration may be drawn from some source, even if the source is a simple movie like Back to the Future or a game like Detroit Become Human and Soma. However with each new invention or science concept that is brought into reality at the pace of which technology is developing, there is a bigger risk to our humanity. Ultimately, it is a choice for us to choose which would be better: Humanity or the advancement of technology?

Stop-Motion Character Animation
I collaborated with Grace Bennett on this stop motion animation. We used Stop Motion Studio to take the pictures of our stop motion video. Grace pieced each scene together, while I edited the videos frame by frame if there was a finger or something that wasnât supposed to be there. We used socks for our characters, and strung a wire through them to get the socks to stand up. One scene in particular, we used a skateboard and propped two bricks on it to hold the camera. This stop motion was a lot of work and some of the scenes couldâve been worked on more, but I am proud of how it turned out.Â

Script, Boards, and Reference for Character Animation
For this project, I will be working with Grace Bennett. Our concept is socks escaping the washing machine during laundry. We are going to animate socks with wire to support their poses. We will be using the StopMo app to film our assignment.
Script:
A person will come in with a laundry basket into the laundry room and start putting their clothes into the washing machine. As they're busy getting detergent, one sock pokes his head out of the machine, looks both ways and hoists itself out. It beckons for the other sock to come. They both slink out and off the machine, and out of the laundry room.
They run outside into the backyard, and as they are about to be free, a dog or cat paw will come into frame and prevents Sock B from moving. Sock B tries to escape, and Sock A tries to help him, but Sock B motions Sock A to go one without them, and is dragged away by the dog or cat. Sock A mourns the loss of Sock B, but then continues to attempt to escape.
Then the camera will cut to the person in the laundry room, taking clothes out of the dryer, then to their room. When they're putting clothes away they notice that one sock is gone and then say, "Where'd my other sock go?"

Science Fact or Cinematic Fiction
In our day-to-day lives, the action-packed movies or games fill our vision with stunning visuals and amazing plot-lines to keep us entertained. However, what some people do not know is that there are many physics errors/misconceptions commonly found in these action-packed movies and games. What most people do not know is what exactly some of these movies or games are not following. They do not know what principle of physics the movie or game is breaking, despite how realistic it can be. For example, one of the principles of physics: The Law of Inertia states that an object moves with constant, uniform motion until acted by an unbalanced force. It also states that an object at rest remains at rest until acted on by an unbalanced force. This principle is broken in the three examples that will be explained through the essay: Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Jurassic World, and Uncharted 4.
First letâs take a look at the movie Indiana Jones: Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. In the scene where Jones and Mutt Williams are found at the pub by the enemy and they run out of pub. They escape with a motorcycle, however the enemy follow them with a car. During this chase, there is a scene where the motorcycle was required to make extremely sharp, 90 degree turns. However, according to the Law of Inertia, this isnât possible. The Law of Inertia involves the centrifugal force, that is for example, when a car turns a very sharp curve on a race track, the person inside would feel like they would be thrown outwards. This is due to force that pushes the person out, inertia. This force was not applied to the scene however. Instead, the motorcycle just comes to 90 degree turn and a stop, which then accelerates again from that position. This does not make sense because the motorcycle's weight wouldnât be able to take both the acceleration and the sudden stop. In reality if the motorcycle were to stop like that, it would tip over at the very least. However that doesnât even happen, and Jones and Mutt Williams does not show any sort of pull, or lean in, that may have them tip over at all. This same error can also be seen even in the newer movies like Jurassic World.
Even with Jurassic World a newer produced movie, there are physics mistakes that are present. Even if they are less noticeable, the mistakes are still ever so present. When the two brothers goes on the hamster ball ride and travels outside of the perimeter or their safety, they get caught by the Indominus Rex. Then as the Indominus Rex kicks their ball, it sends them spinning into the rest of the other dinosaurs. The scene then cuts into the inside of the ball, just briefly, showing the two brotherâs terrified faces. The scene shows the brothers sitting upright inside the ball with indication of the ball spinning. However, according to the Law of Inertia, the spinning of the ball or the contraption inside the ball would cause the two boys to lean outwards due to the centrifugal force. The Law of Inertia isnât just broken in movies, it is often broken in video games as well.
Uncharted 4, which came out in 2016, also has errors in game play that disobey the Law of Inertia. During the car chase where Nathan and Victor drive down the roads chased by a huge tank truck; the car runs through many small obstacles like pots, carts, and even fences. However, there were no indication of impact with the car and whatever obstacle the car if going through. Law of Inertia states that an object moves with constant, uniform motion until acted by an unbalanced force. This car chase does not illustrate that. The car moves at the constant uniform motion, but when coming in contact with the bigger obstacles like the fences or the carts, the car still moves in that constant uniform motion. There were no sign of a slow down unless there was a turn or a stop in which the player commands it in real time. In fact some of the obstacles just break in contact with the car, with little to no consequence to the car itself.
As illustrated within the essay, the Law of Inertia is something that be overlooked in a lot of scenes. Sometimes movies or games tend to break the laws on accident because of a poorly illustrated or directed scene. But majority of the times, now with the newer movies and games playing out, there is a purpose in breaking the laws of physics. For example, Jurassic Worldâs âmistakeâ was to clarify a better scene and convey a larger terror in the boyâs faces as the ball spins. If the boys leaned towards the direction of the spin, it would not only be hard to fit the scene in a carefully composed frame but it may also seem like a comedic scene. With Uncharted 4, the Laws of Physics would be broken due to the possible glitches that may occur from this mechanic and also for a smoother game play for the gamers. In fact, in games following the physics laws may seem to make the game more realistic, however it would hinder game play quite a bit. Sometimes breaking the laws of physics is okay, if it is broken with a reasonable intention in the mind of the director.
Outline of First Term Paper

Thesis Statement: The Law of Inertia states that an object moves with constant, uniform motion until acted by an unbalanced force. It also states that an object at rest remains at rest until acted on by an unbalanced force. However, these films/games does not follow these rules at certain scenes of the game.
First Paragraph:
In this scene where Jones and the kid are being chased by the car, the kid drives the motorcycles and turns a straight 90 degree turn with his motocycle. This breaks law of inertia because of how the characters were not thrown outwards, off the motorcycle, (or it does not show any force that may pull the characters off indicating a sharp turn) as the motorcycle skids to an almost-complete stop and turns completely and accelerates.

Second Paragraph:
In this scene where the two brothers are in the hamster ball meant to sightsee dinosaurs, they come along to the mutated dinosaur that kicks the ball and sends the ball spinning and rolling out at the same time. However as the scene jumps to the two boys in side the ball with the background indicating that they are spinning, there is no centrifugal force shown by the two boys that they are spinning in any way.

Third Paragraph:
In the scene where Nathan and Victor drives down the road chased by a huge tank truck, Nathan has to drive through multiple obstacles like carts, fences, pots, etc. However, during the gameplay, there is no sign of the car that is passing through the multiple structures show any sign of unbalanced forces on the car. In fact the objects/structures just break in contact at the car, with little to consequence to the people on the car and the car itself.

Stop Motion Animation of Falling

I encountered some problems trying to translate my storyboards to my video. Video-wise, I planned on having the camera pan out, however the table at my house wasnât big enough, and so I had to take some artistic liberties to make it slighty cropped. Hopefully the feeling of falling is still somewhat believable. Holding the camera was a challenge as well, since I didnât have a stand for my camera.
So first I created the storyboards and planned out what I had to do for the stop motion animation. Then, I took my camera with the stop motion app and started taking the shots on the table. I then added the drawings of the person and the ledge with photoshop, and also fixed some of the timing with photoshop.Â
Script, Boards, and Reference for Basic Animation
I plan to do a pair of sunglasses falling off of a surface and bouncing off of a personâs head into their hand. This would all be shot on a flat surface. I want it to look like the sunglasses bounced off of the personâs head and have the glasses falling onto the personâs hands. I plan on shooting this on the white table of my house, and I could perhaps draw the person with photoshop. I would most likely be shooting a scene with my camera and tripod. My essential props would most likely just be my sunglasses. My reference video would probably consist of me figuring out the physics of how the sunglasses fall off of a flat surface, as well as how to imitate the sunglasses bouncing off of a slightly bouncy head. I used one of my plushies to imitate that bouncy head effect that I wanted to get. Â

Mini-Portfolio
Hello! My name is Lillian Lee, and I am currently in my second year of Animation/Illustration. I will be taking the portfolio review this semester! I am currently leaning a little bit towards the story boarding route, however I still have yet to try everything out so Iâm open to any tract in general. Iâm currently taking ANI 113a, 112b, and 28; which is the acrylic painting, figure drawing, and animation class.
