First of all, it is one of the most unpleasant works ever written, filmed, and published by a variety of people. Other than that, the main character Erika has a lot to say even when she is not facing her supposed antagonist. I assume the level of her self-hatred, obviously engaged by her mother, made the ideas of pleasure, desire and violence all get interpolated in her brain. It's clear that she doesn't put herself in a respectable position even though she has a certain attitude regarding her domain, the piano.

But as Walter appears into the play, he messes up her usual organisation. I had this feeling throughout the film that he meant liberty other than just a sexual renaissance into the head of an older woman. Klemmer acts so full of himself, and it might have instigated Erika as she was locked in this state of perfection established by her own mum. At the end, when she got fully humiliated by the person whom she deflated her deepest secrets onto, she had no one. As she is just a part of others' lives, like a piece of decoration in a room – not important enough to be noticed, because the bigger picture (the whole room) is more important than it.
