My Personal Statement
Lilly Brend-Fish
Performing has always been my passion since age 5 when I attended weekly drama classes with the Helen O’Grady Drama Academy. Following on from this I took part in every available show and singing opportunity school had to offer and at age 9 I joined the Church choir. In year 10 I had the exciting opportunity of joining a pilot in-school Level II BTEC course with Reynolds Performing Arts Academy where, after 2 years, I achieved a Merit.
Whenever I go and see a piece of theatre in London I imagine myself playing each role or simply being a part of the ensemble. Although it has taken time for me to develop, as a person and a performer, I feel I am ready to take the next step in pursuing it as a career.
I am currently training as a performer at the Miskin Theatre within North West Kent College and am in my last year of completing a level 3 in Performing Arts. Since starting my training at Miskin I feel I have progressed and really flourished personally. In addition to Miskin I am 7 months into my vocal training with a leading professional vocal coach. I have recently taken part in a charity singing showcase and this experience for me was amazing as I received a tremendous applause for closing the showcase with Liza Minnelli’s ‘Cabaret’.
As well as the thrill I get from being on stage and sharing a story with an audience, I also enjoy the hustle and bustle backstage. I always get a rush of energy minutes before the opening of a show when everybody is rushing around, checking their costumes and props or getting mic-d up. For me it highlights how collaborative theatre is, everybody from different parts of the industry working together to put out the same show, I genuinely love that sense of ‘team’.
I'm applying for your Musical Theatre course because I love putting all three of dance, acting and singing together in one show. Musical Theatre has always interested me, from the old classics like 'Singing in the rain' and 'Funny Girl' to the modern shows. It's inspiring how a song can capture an audience in the moment and sometimes even bring them to tears. And I love being in rehearsals for these types of shows, the excitement from everybody as you wait for the release of the cast after your nerve racking audition, and then making that character come to life as you bring it to the stage.
As well as the performance side of working on a show there is also the rehearsal process which I find extremely fun and interesting; recently I have found it so amazing that when working on a show how passionate we all are and how much we really believe in our work and our determination to give it our all.
Over the past year there has definitely been a visible change in the people I am working with; we all have the same kind of creative ideas and just want to share them with people who are willing to listen. I really enjoy the closeness everybody has with each other when working on a project, working together as professionals whilst having a good friendship with one another is very rewarding.
I have a burning passion to succeed in the Theatre and I can see myself following this career hopefully for the rest of my life but, to get to where I want to get, I need to carry on my education in order to achieve my set goals, I do hope I can continue this journey of study and development with you.
