Kenny vs. Lilly in No Going BackĀ (x)
she lives in you she lives in me she watches over everything we see
I just found this and i thought iād show you omfg
oh my god yes, TWDG fandom has figured it out, Rebecca is actually Lillyās motherĀ
she left Larry for Alvin and thatās why poor Larry was forced to become an unapologetic racist
thereās such a resemblance between her and Lilly too, I canāt believe I never noticed it before
wow
People have suggested various character pairs that wouldāve made for a better ācharacter vs. characterā final choice, but do you know who I think would have made the best final choice?
Jane and Sarah.
It would have shown clearly what kind of survivor your Clementine has become. Does she choose to go with the hardened survivor, the one who has the greatest chance of staying alive, at the cost of much of her humanity (and the death of her only real friend)? Or does she honor her promise to Carlos and her pinky swear to be Sarahās friend and guardian, and choose to stay with the survivor largely considered nothing but a liability?
(There could also still be the option to choose neither and to go forth with just AJ of course, abandoning both Jane and Sarah.)
Should you choose Jane, the ending is the same as the canon Jane ending. You return to Howeās and start attempting to rebuild it, deciding whether or not to let the family in.
Should you choose Sarah, the game ends by cutting to a scene of the two girls and AJ back at the cabin by the river. Sarah is helping Clem mend her gunshot wound, offering bits of medical information sheās picked up from Carlos over the years. Clementine mentions that she never finished teaching Sarah how to properly use a gun to protect herself, and that when sheās a little less weak from her wound sheāll show Sarah how. Sarah thanks her, and then thanks her again for standing by her and being a true friend. The episode ends with the two girls locking pinkies once more, and agreeing that they wonāt give up on each other no matter what.
On Telltale Games' Ableist Treatment of Sarah
For those who arenāt a fan of this once-amazing series, The Walking Dead Game has always been lauded for its character diversity (with a wide range of different nationalities and racial backgrounds represented, well-written female characters and characters of all ages and body types featured prominently throughout the game).
In Season 2 we encountered Sarah, a Hispanic 15-year-old girl who is neurodivergent and has trouble coping with the horrors of the new world around her.
Now of course, being a female character and being disabled, she was immediately despised by the majority of the fandom. Slurs were tossed around, people frequently referred to her as āa liabilityā, and there were frequent posts made on Telltaleās forums, Facebook, Youtube, and elsewhere wishing her dead and hoping for a chance to kill her. This was nothing new - we had seen much of this before, with other female characters in the franchise. However, the ableism wasĀ rampant, and people would write essays about how she was ābringing the group downā and why her death would be a āgoodā thing for the other characters.
(spoilers)Ā Her death came after the player was told several times by a pragmatic character that Sarah was dragging the group down, that she was a weakness, and that she āclearlyā didnāt want to live (despite the fact that she screams and cries for help the entire time sheās being eaten). Instead of subverting that characterās pragmatism and showing that people with disabilities can still survive an apocalypse, she is killed even if the player chooses to save her (in a horrible manner, where she is partially crushed under a fallen balcony and then devoured alive by walkers as she screams for help). Her death served to further the already-prevalent fandom belief that disabled people are unnecessary weights holding survivors back, and makes total apocalyptic pragmatism look like a justified belief.
Of course, that made us (Sarah fans) angry and upset, especially considering many of us are ourselves neurodivergent (and several autistic teenage fans headcanoned her as being autistic) and the belief that characters like us are just liabilities is extremely hurtful. But thatās not whatās spurring me to make this post today.
Yesterday, Greg Miller of IGN released an episode of āPlaying Deadā, a web series where he interviews employees of Telltale Games (the studio that makes TWDG) about various choices and events from the previous episode. This is where things went from bad to absolutely atrocious.Ā
Greg Miller spent the entire segment on Sarah putting her down.
(āWas it really a choice if I was gonna save Sarah? Fuck Sarah, man. Iāve been looking to get out of the Sarah business for quite some time.ā āWhy?ā āCause she sucks!ā)
He talked about how glad he was to be able to leave her behind, and how happy he was to watch her get eaten.
(āI saw her get torn apart. I was like, āYes. Excellent.āā)
Now, this would be bad enough. But we know Greg Miller is an asshole to female characters. He has been since Season 1. Where this went wrong, was this part:
(āā¦thereās just so many people like in the office, on the internet who were just like yāknow, āSarah, Sarah, Sarah, I canāt wait to get rid of her.āā)
The two Telltale employees publicly stated that people at Telltale were excited to kill Sarah. That they were waiting for a chance to do so. And that they listened to the ableist casual fandom who hated her and used that to go forward with her eventual pointless death.Ā
They then go on to make a joke about the fact that, in order to save Sarah, the player has to physically assault her while sheās in the middle of a shut-down. They joke that people who hated her wanted to slap her, but that would mean saving her, something they didnāt want to do.
(āSo itās just like, āOh so you wanted to slap her, but in order to do that you had to want her to be around at the same time.ā [Mark laughs]ā
The final nail in the coffin for the fandomās tolerance of this bullshit came from this part of the interview:
(āWe meet her for the first time in Episode, I guess at the end of Episode 1, right?āĀ āYeah.ā āWhere [Clementine] gets to talk to her. Somethingās off about her.ā āSomethingās off. Yeah.ā āThis isnāt right.ā
"And I thought at first it was that Carlos [Sarahās father] was just sheltering her, right? And it was going to turn out that āOh, sheās a normal child.āā
"And then itās like, āOh, youāre still not normal.āā
"I was like, āWell, I hate you even more now.ā āRight.ā āAnd the time has come.āā)
He tells the Telltale employees how he feels about Sarah ānot being normalā and that he wants her to die for it - and they agree!
This is unacceptable. It is disgusting and unprofessional for a studio to speak openly about how much they were looking forward to killing a disabled character, and to let shitpiles like Greg Miller speak in such an ableist way about her without saying a word in her defense - even agreeing with him.Ā Telltale just posted this interview to their official tumblr an hour ago, meaning they obviously have no remorse and see nothing wrong with how it went.
Disabled and neurodivergent players all over the internet are hurt by this. Several have tried to contact Telltale, to try to get some sort of apology or acknowledgment out of them, to no avail. So many players, myself included, are disappointed that this company - known for diversity and well-handled diverse characters - has botched the treatment of a disabled WoC so badly.
We need to make them aware that this is unacceptable. If anyone could take a few minutes of their time to send Telltale an ask here on tumblr, or better yet, email them ([email protected]) calmly explaining why this is unacceptable and how it harms actual, real disabled people, it would be so greatly appreciated.
The Sarah fandom has been put through so much already. The last thing we need is the creator of the game spewing ableist bullshit that propagates the belief that disabled people are āburdensā and āliabilitiesā. It has real-world implications, it harms real people, and it needs to be acknowledged.
President Lilly Caulās state of the union address āLook, I know Iām not doing the best job running this country, butĀ I donāt see any of you stepping up to help! Iām doing this all on my own! Nobody ever asks how Iām holding up here, running this whole fucking country! Everyone just expects me to do everything! If youāre not happy with the way Iām running things then YOU do it!ā
I am NOT a liability!Ā
one day at dinner Sarah just boldly announced to Carlos āI think I like girlsā
Carlos just kind of paused mid-bite, chewed for a few long seconds, then swallowed and said āIs that so?ā
and she nodded and then looked back down at her food, murmuring it again to herself
Carlos stayed quiet for a few long minutes, then finally just said āWhatever makes you happy, my precious girlā
things that are 100% canon and true about Sarah:
likes MLP
has a tumblr (where she just reblogs nice pictures of flowers and horses)
participates in NaNoWriMo every year
has a bed covered in stuffed animals
writes fanfiction
I love this screenshot because the Crooked Man looks so worried back there.
twdg modern au and trash trio Clem/Becca/Sarah being best buds is seriously the cutest thing to me
I just imagined them hanging out and having sleepovers
They go to an arcade and all of them are spending all of there money on the one claw machine in there and Sarah and Clem do really well and get like 6 stuffed prizes and Becca is like āpssh this is easy, my turnā and loses 8 times before yelling āWHAT THE HELL THIS GAME IS RIGGED ITāS IMPOSSIBLEā
They have a sleepover and decide to watch a horror movie and Becca says ādonāt worry you two can just cling onto me if you get scaredā buts she is the one that ends up scared and crams herself in between Clem and Sarah and Sarah says āitās not that scary, it doesnāt even look realā
The next morning when they wake up and Shel made them this huge breakfast that they hardly finished
trash trio
"Sarah didnāt want to make herself more useful!!" yeah thatās why she begged Clementine to teach her how to use a gun, managed to outrun and hide from Carver in the cabin in the throes of a panic attack, andĀ alerted the group to walkers thatĀ nobody else saw in Episode 4, giving them enough time to get to a safer spot with Rebecca
yeah, she clearly just wanted to be useless and do nothing to help
Becca: hey sarah
Becca: losersayswhat
Sarah: what?
Becca: OH MAN
Becca: OH SWEET FUCKING CHRIST
Becca: I GOT YOU SO GOOD THAT WAS AWESOME
Becca: OH SWEET SWEET DICKS IN MY MOUTH I HAVE NEVER LAUGHED THIS HARD. EVER.
Becca: JESUS. JESUS HELP ME.
