“Does Derek know that? Cause ten bucks says he tells Da what happened. He doesn’t keep things from his alpha, especially not things like this.” She almost laughed “As if that’ll matter when he hear’s that lip to lip contact happened between you and one of his wolves. No, we just have to make Da see that it’s not that bad….” 

“Riiiight, whatever you say sis” Jesse replied with a grin that said she didn’t believe that.

Riley sat straight up in the bed like waking from a nightmare. “Oh God. He’s gonna tell dad. Oh my God that idiot. C’mon we have to go find Dad.” Riley pushed herself onto her feet and grabbed Jesse’s hand. “I can’t tell him myself.”

“He’s really dumb, and not even that hot, but believe what you want.”

“He’s probably completely freaking out over what Da will do to him when he finds out. With everything that’s going on at the moment who knows what he’ll do to him…..” She thought for a few moments, drumming her fingers absentmindedly on her collar bone “Ok” She said, refocusing on her sister “We need to do damage control. Aka make sure Da doesn’t go postal over this.” 

“So….you and Derek huh? I so knew it!”

“Yeah damage control is not telling him. Why on earth would you think we’d tell him. This never has to be spoken in the light of day again.” Riley caught the pillow, and whipped her head to look at her sister. “What do you mean what he’ll do? It’s my fault.”

“I just told you there is nothing there.”

Pulling her legs up, Jess turned so that she sat crossed legged facing her sister. “Of course he didn’t kiss you back Ri! He knows how protective Da is of us as well as we do. It wouldn’t matter how he felt about you or the kiss.” She grabbed a cushion of hugged it to her chest “If Da finds out…. And if there’s one thing Derek hates doing more than upsetting you it’s angering Da.”

“I know I shouldn’t have done it! But I mean if dad would be ok with anyone it would be Derek. Right?” She flipped herself over dramatically pushing the pillow up in the air as a distraction. “Well he doesn’t want anything to do with me, so it’s whatever.”

Riley had captured Jesse’s full attention the moment she’d grabbed her hand and started dragging her up stairs but she made a show of protesting against being dragged. As her little sister dealt with the stereo - telling Jesse it was something she didn’t want any of the others over hearing - she threw herself down onto the bed. When the words left her sisters lips though she sat bolt up right “What!?” She stood and crossed the room to her sister so she could speak more quietly “You kissed him? Derek? Dads golden boy?” She stared for a moment “How did he react?”

Riley collapsed next to her, embarrassment crashing over her in waves. Shoving her face in the pillow she gripped it tightly hoping somehow it would soak up her shame. “Yes, he was being sweet- I don’t know maybe not.  I mean that’s how he always acts, and so I kissed him and then he just kind of froze and I think I screwed up our entire friendship so I ran away, because he didn’t kiss me back.”

Riley dragged Jesse up the stairs swinging her into her bedroom. Shutting the door, she cranked the stereo playing some random mashup of Swedish hip hop. “So I kissed Derek.” Riley stared up, searching for some reaction.

Hearing the sudden door slam, the young wolf rushed towards the sound hoping to find the cause. Getting to the door the young wolf knocked on the door. “Riley,babygirl is everything ok?”

“I’m fine.” She was proud of her voice for not noticeably wobbling. She anxiously flicked her nail back and forth against the grain of her jeans. “Just leave me alone Aunt Cat.”

Why am I mad?

“You’re welcome.” He replied proudly, happy he could do something to win her favor.

The kiss caught him off guard and he gasped, scooting back a bit. He stared at her with wide eyes. “Oh no….oh shit….oh my god!” A light flush colored his cheeks as he gaped. But it wasn’t that he didn’t like it. Cautiously he crawled forward again. “Riley….”

Riley scrambled away from him and off the couch. Tears pricking in her eyes as she ran away, apologies falling after her. Running the stairs two at a time she slid in the door, and fell against it. Her hand reached up to lock the door tight as the tears ran fully down her face. “So stupid.”

Why am I mad?

He made a disgruntled sound and tickled her side lightly. “I can be scary if I want to…it just so happens I don’t want to be with you.”

Watching her for a moment his expression dimmed. If only she knew. “I’m not….really.” He whispered. He bumped her nose with his. “It’s that shifter blood. We burn twice as hot as you little humans.”

“Well thank you then. I’m not sure my fragile disposition could handle it.”

His nose bumped against her’s, and she was suddenly all to aware of where his lips were. Riley pushed forward, kissing him tentatively. She looked up at him waiting to see his reaction. “I-I’m sorry.”

He rested his cheek on his hand and stared at her. “We aren’t huh?”

His arm came around her easily and he nuzzled her hair gently. “Yeah. I do. He makes me feel needed. Important. You know like I have a purpose.”

“Nope. I mean look at you. Completely unterrifying.” 

“You’re important, even without my dad.” She shut her eyes, breathing slower as he nuzzled her. “You’re so warm.”

“It would appear so.” He rubbed the back of his neck. “Don’t get too attached. I’m not sure how long she’s planning on staying.”

“Not planning on it.” She pulled her knees to her chest, resting her chin on them. “All I need is you, me and Jess.”

“The worst. Total worst.”

He kissed her forehead. “I know so. Not that there is anything wrong with your sister…but I’ve seen you single handedly stare down a ravenous werewolf…and more importantly…your Dad.”

“Well werewolves aren’t that scary, and crying solves my dad pretty quickly.” She kissed his cheek before settling next to him. “Do you like working for my dad?”

He let out a little gasp like she’d bit him and pulled his hand back with a pout. “Meanie.”

He frowned. “Why don’t you think you could do it? You are just as strong as Jesse…maybe even stronger.”

“Oh I’m the meanest.”

She pushed herself up to face him. “You really think so?” She turned so her forehead rested against his.

Father, Daughter

“I got this for you…” Adam passed Riley the brand new phone still it’s box. The latest upgrade from her phone that was broken.

“As promised….”

Riley flipped the box all around, studying the seal, before slicing it open with a pen. “Thank you.”

“I heard we were doing movie nights now.” Her eyes were trained on the phone navigating the brand new toy like only a teenager could. “That true?”

“That means you…me…popcorn, milk-duds and Guardians of the Galaxy.”

“Yummmmmm, lets roll.” she stole the bag of popcorn from him, pouring it into a bowl. “Pepsi?”

He tapped her jaw softly to close it.

Staring at her for a moment his smile brightened. “You’d want to go to college with me? I thought you’d be in a rush to get as far away from here as possible.”

She nipped at it lightly, letting her teeth clack together.

“I don’t know if I’ll actually be able to do it alone. Jesse totally could, but I don’t know about me.”
