Clean Down Comforter at Home?
Well, I got a down comforter for my bed several years ago, and I've never washed it (which is gross, I know, but I didn't now you could!) So today, I learned how and here's what I did:
Here's the basic idea and below will be the full detail of what I did exactly
1. Let washer fill with warm water, soap (bleach if you have a white comforter) on delicate setting
2. While it fills, put a bit of dish soap on any stains and rub them in.
3. Once the washer has started agitating for about a minuet, gently place in your comforter and let the washer do it's thing. Be sure its rinsed really well.
4. Dry on the air setting until completely dry. (probably about an hour)
First, I set my washer on delicate with warm water and about as much detergent as I would for a huge load of laundry. Then I added some bleach because it's white (I read it was safe to use by Martha Stewart, and I trusted her judgement).
Now I set the comforter aside while the washer started to fill up with water and soap. If your comforter has any holes in it, you'll need to fix them before your start this or risk damaging your comforter.
While that was filling, I laid out my comforter on the floor and sprayed all any stains I saw with a little bit of dish soap (because it cuts through stains better than you'd think). I rubbed it in over the spots with my finger.
Once the washer started to agitate and blend the soap and water together I pushed it down in to the warm water gently and let it do it's thing.
I then dried it on air with the delicate setting for about an hour with the dryer sheet, and now I have a fluffy, amazing smelling comforter of happiness!
