Abyss 101 || Julius & Dia
afacettes:
The phrase highest paying jobs snagged on Julius’s brain like a sharp corner catching on and ripping a run in one’s tights— his head snapping to obedient attention like a dog who’d just heard the word treat. He hung on her every word at that point, no need to push the details forcibly into his memory. It’s the reason people come here after all.
Didn’t he know it. “What a shame. I can’t say that I’m surprised, however,” he replied gently, picking his words very carefully. “The call of the abyss, you said? What a poignant way of putting it. Very— poetic.♡”
He continued to nod as she continued, thanking his roommates mentally for having had the good sense to go into the adventurer division, after all. He, of course, had favored applying to the branch that didn’t necessarily mean he need physically go out and explore, something that he could provide help with without committing to the danger and exhaustion of adventure— but that didn’t mean he couldn’t be tempted with some part time, to hear his superior explain it as potentially as lucrative as they’d hoped it would be.
“I’ll remember that,” he added, grinning. It honestly wouldn’t be hard to not show proficiency in many areas other than the one he’d been hired to, however. Julius couldn’t quite call himself humble, but even he knew that his skill set was rather specific. And limited.
“How do you like working here, doctor?” he ventured, tearing his eyes away from the employees sorting through artifacts nearby. “Do you find it as fulfilling and exciting as the adventurers must?”
The flicker in his eye as she mentioned the pay rate for the explorers was unmistakable, one she was used to by this point as most researchers eventually jumped ship for life of excitement and wealth. But she didn’t dare say a word on the matter. Julius seemed interested in the job he had chosen and what she had to say about the guild.
Dia smiled, “The call is a unique phenomena and it’s been documented as far back as the very creation of the city. It’s beautiful and unique in that sense. The abyss sometimes calls to people so strongly that people have the inherent need to be near it. And... personally that’s why I think so many live close to the edge.”
“Personally I love being here. I’ve always had a bit of a scientific mind growing up and I just put it to use. I’m afraid there isn’t much of an exciting story to it. I wish I didn’t have to do translation work while I’m in biology, but I’m fine either way. And I do go into the abyss off and on. Normally to study the habits of monsters in their habitat. I find it more personally rewarding than frequent dives for treasure.”
She chuckled quietly, the pair passing a few more desks and rounding the corner to unexciting doors, “A lot of these rooms lead to decontamination rooms for the study of biological matter. We find odd things in there.” She gave a pause, brows furrowing, “The things we find never last. The ones that aren’t living that is. After a few days... poof. They vanish like they were never here. They nearly... evaporate. It’s... it’s fascinating but there are time limits on how long we can study.”
Abyss 101 || Julius & Dia
afacettes:
Julius fell pleasantly into step behind his new superior, folding his arms behind his back as he trailed along behind her— his posture open and curious. As they moved down the hallway, his eyes slid left to right - taking in the decor, the architecture, the signs on the doors, the general layout of the place. He’d never been especially good at committing things like spatial layout or official titles and names to memory, but it seemed in his best interest that he at least try to absorb as much of his surroundings as possible.
If he was to report information back to his cohorts, he’d need to at least try to sound like he’d been paying attention— especially as each of them equally new to the guild, and equally quietly invested in the rumors of riches they’d been fed before they took the plunge to move here.
As Dr. Beaumont spoke, Julius made a point of nodding along thoughtfully. He had indeed heard this spiel in his interview, but it was never said that Julius was a man bright enough to memorize things said to him on first listen. Captain Liska, he thought to himself. That did sound familiar-ish, yes. The S.S. Ibis. Got it. He would try to remember that one. History was important and all that. New discoveries in the mysterious abyss— yes, that had been the bit he’d certainly remembered.
“How exciting,☆” he added, a curious smile in his voice. He perked up when she turned to a question, brightening considerably.
“That’s right— the geologist division. I’m very excited to find out what my work here will entail.”
The edges of her lips pulled into a mild smile as he confirmed his station and she nodded, “It would seem we will be in close proximity to one another. I work in the biology department and we are mere labs apart. If you need anything during your first few weeks my office isn’t too far from where you will be located.”
The hall widened, opening office space filled with series of desks and artificers at work; observing and appraising artifacts of varying size, “The appraisal and selling of artifacts are unsurprisingly some of the highest paying jobs for those working with the adventurer’s guild. It’s the reason people come here after all. Between the call of the abyss and the opportunities it’s not hard to see why people are here.”
She sighed heavily, “Unfortunately we’re also slightly understaffed on the research division. Everyone wants to get rich off found ancient goods, no one wants to study the composition of rock samples and translate texts of ancients from within the tribe.” Dia looked at Julius sideways, “Don’t show proficiency in one of the other jobs we need. They will drop so much more on you. Trust me.”

Upon hearing the word ‘date’ a small gasp of excitement left Luna’s lips, immediately placing both hands above her heart in response. Her romantic life was nearly non-existent, so living through a complete stranger was as close as she was going to get at this point.
“A date?” She repeated, squeaking out the words with a grin plastered on her face. “How exciting! Where are you going…? What are you doing?” She paused, thinking over her own past encounters on the island and the… interesting people she’d met so far. Was there even anyone around that would warrant such excitement? Especially from such an elegant girl (which seemed to be a rare find here).
“Is he like, worth dressing up for?” For such a high class woman to settle for someone was the last thing Luna would want to witness – which in her mind justified her apparent nosiness.
The excitement on the woman’s face mirrored what she felt. Dia tugged on a strand of hair, blushing and smiling over having someone else as happy for this, “We’re going to get dinner... dancing... it’s going to be over the lantern festival too so it’s going to be extra romantic.”
Dia laughed quietly, observing the woman’s face as she questioned if her date was worth dressing up for. She paused, cocking her brow a bit, “I would say he is. If he weren’t I’d dress up anyway. I will look good regardless of the circumstances.”
“Though I wouldn’t have said yes if he wasn’t worth my time.”

“Sandalwood, petrichor, mint, blueberry, lemon, pine...” She paused, running through the scents she loved more than anything, “I don’t have just one that I love, mostly because there’s just so many to go through. It depends on the circumstance.”
daydream; best memory?
Dia paused, attempting to rummage through her own memories, “Uh... I don’t have a particularly fantastic memory. I suppose the first few days that I was able to go to public school were some of the best I could remember. I was well enough to leave my home. Other than that I’m not perfectly sure what’s my best.”
valentine; best gift you’ve ever received?
She chewed on her thumbnail, still having trouble considering her terrible memory, “Um... hm. I guess it’d be... huh. I don’t know. I mean it was a gift enough to have my dad carefully taking care of me through my younger years. I didn’t necessarily see all that he did at the time, but he worked so hard to make sure that I was ok and could be healthy when I grew up.”
Abyss 101 || Julius & Dia
afacettes:
Julius had long ago become accustomed to being in new places; the general sense of unfamiliarity had become a longer running theme for him than any sort of home had ever been. Living this way often meant that one had to make themselves at home wherever they were if they were to ever get any semblance of sanity— and Julius had become very good at making himself feel at home.
The soft, plush couches that lined the lobby had been calling his name the moment he’d walked in. When it had been suggested that he take a seat and wait for a Doctor Beaumont to come and fetch him, he’d snuggled right into one, lounging back to get the comfiest view of his surroundings possible. Besides, they really oughtn’t have made such a professional spot so comfortable if they hadn’t wanted to encourage a little lounging, anyway.
The call of his name pulled him out of the dazed staring he was doing at the opposite wall, snapping him out of his attempt to take note of each of the decorations to better situate himself by. He slid smoothly to his feet in one fluid motion, all smiles as he took her hand in a light handshake in greeting.
“Ah— yes, that’s me. ♡ It’s a pleasure to meet you, Doctor. I’m very grateful for the opportunity to work under you.”
‘He is certainly interesting.’ Dia thought to herself as she looked up at him, unsurprised by how much taller he was than her. It would be impressive to meet a man as short as her.
Dia simply gestured and took a step towards the direction they needed to go, passing the main desk and walking down a hall where the deep green tile flooring of the lobby faded into sterile white, “Though I’m sure you heard the spiel during the interview, I’m obligated to repeat this.”
She cleared her throat and through the script she had recited so many times before, “The Abyss Research Guild was founded over two hundred years ago by Captain Liska of the S.S Ibis, needing a stronghold to study the findings from within the mysterious abyss we all live around. Since it’s inception we have grown to astonishing greatness and continue to unearth new discoveries about the abyss itself.”
Dia sighed, “I’m... gonna skip the rest of that since it’s only the two of us. You’ve been hired to the geologist division, yes?”

“Leblanc, Julius...” Dia muttered to herself, reviewing the new employee’s information while briskly walking to the lobby from her office. She was tasked with giving him the tour of the facility, introducing him to his work stations, and generally answering questions.
Syllabus day for the new hire as it were.
She rounded the corner from her end of the building into the well decorated lobby, spotting a new face reclined in one of the plush couches. If this wasn’t him, then she had no idea who this was.
Taking a chance, she approached the man, giving a smile and offering her hand, “Mister Leblanc I take it? I am Doctor Beaumont, I’ll be showing you around today.”

Luna shook her head in agreement with the other, huffing loudly as she crossed her arms across her chest. “ Pfft – you’re so right. ” She replied with a chuckle. “ You’re like, the first well dressed person I’ve seen since I arrived here. I’m just so relieved to see they exist –! “
A small giggle escaped from her, turning her pout into a smile as she relaxed in the presence of the woman. “ My name’s Luna, by the way. I’m kinda honored someone with such good fashion sense decided to stop in here. ♪ “ Which, was only a half lie – if she owned the place, it would be obviously the best place to shop, but the petite woman was just an employee - for now.
“ Oh ♪ And can I help you find anything in particular? We just received and put out our fall season stock. ♥ “
Dia blushed slightly, flattered by the compliments given to her. Her fashion sense had been a point of pride for her and now the compliments were starting to make her a little flustered- not that her expression particularly reflected that.
“I’m Dia. I’m mostly just looking for... something nice to wear on a date? Or maybe just...” She rotated her wrist, attempting to drum up the right word she wanted to say, “I need dress...es.”
Her brain was slowly frying under the combined weight of having a date, being complimented, and having a far more outgoing personality interacting with her more muted one.
She inhaled slowly, steadying herself, and gently exhaled. She just needed to readjust herself.

Idle time was wasted time to the pink haired designer. Although it had been a slow day for sales, Luna had kept herself busy in anyway she could, including her current job of organizing the back room. It was awfully boring, but an organized store was a welcoming store – it all ended up in profit.
The chime of the bell from the front door was faint from the back, but Luna’s keen ears picked up on it right away.
“Coming~♪”
She nearly bounced over to the woman who had just entered, clapping her hands together as she gave her best cheery smile.
“ Hello ♥ Welcome! Can I help you find anything today? “
Taking better note of the stranger, Luna realized she was incredibly well-dressed. Something rather uncommon on this isolated island, and it was a relief to see someone around here had some taste.
“ I totally adore that outfit by the way – where did you find it? “
It was rare for Dia to have the time to get away from her work. Be it for one reason or another, it was just incredibly difficult to get a break. But today was one of the few days she was free to break away, and she decided that she was going to indulge herself.
She had heard about the boutique from a few of the female employees that she worked with, and she figured she would give it a shot.
The shop was small, but charming, and the clothing on display was definitely to her taste. Some brighter than she would prefer, but the designs were what she wanted.
Dia had only just walked through the door as the pink haired owner cheerfully greeted her. It must’ve been slow today, given the quietness of the store and how excited the owner seemed to be.
“Oh thank you.” She smiled mildly, genuinely attempting to seem friendly, “I bought it off island while visiting family. The island here doesn’t have many fashion outlets.”

“I’ll come up with something preliminary then and ask for advice as I go. We’ll address any concerns as they arise.”
Charles chewed on his bottom lip and gathered his courage. This would be a leap. He’d admired her from afar for some time and knew he wasn’t entirely unattractive.
“Would you like to get dinner?” he asked, hoping that she didn’t notice the anxious bounce of his knee under the desk. “With me, I mean. It um, it doesn’t have to be a date, exactly, if you don’t want it to be.”
He’d like it to be. He liked her. Oh god, he was rambling. Stop. Stop.
Dia paused as the words registered in her head. She smiled faintly and pulled the spare notepad she had stowed in her purse, “I’d love to get dinner with you.” She flipped through the written in pages, finding one that wasn’t loaded with notes and tearing it out.
She scribbled her phone number down, setting it on his desk, “I may not be the best with timing but... at least you’ll still be in contact with me now.”
Despite how difficult it was to tell, Dia couldn’t stop smiling. And she really hoped that Charles could notice the shift in her expression.
“I’ll be on my way now. I’ll... be waiting on your call.”

Well, she’d certainly called his reaction, unbeknownst to Cinna himself.
The crease in his brow became more pronounced at the notion that she was ‘somewhat’ working on her health, and found himself folding his arms as she’d continued to speak. He’d been kind enough to let her finish - he wouldn’t deny her that much - but all in all, he’d found himself squinting, bubbling with even more concern than when he’d asked the question in the first place. That was… far too vague a response for his liking. All of this was.
“Define ‘more’. More than once a week?”
He held up a single finger and pointed to the ceiling with the hand holding the report as though for emphasis. He had never really fancied himself the lecturing sort, but apparently he wasn’t quite above being fussy quite yet. His palm tilted lower until he was pointing towards her instead.
“When was the last time you had a full day off?”
Cinna was getting that look in his eyes again. She can’t really blame him, considering that her previous health efforts were ‘oh god my body is broken, i am god’s mistake’.
“More than a week, I’ve been going to the Guild’s training facility. Nothing too much, mostly cardio. It’s only been about three weeks, but at least I’m actually committing to it more.” She smiled, tentatively proud of her own achievement.
Though she did sigh as he began another lecture. At least it was loving.
“...about a month.” Dia frowned, “I think I work too much...”

“..and that concludes my report on what manner of fauna we might predicatively find on the lower levels. Obviously, acquiring more of the keystones would speed things up a great deal… but I doubt we would get any further intel on those from asking the disappearing door nicely.”
Cinna thumbed the edge of the paper in his hand thoughtfully, glancing from its contents to Dia. It was always just a LITTLE weird being official about this sort of thing, but it was hard to say who might be passing the door and when. Not that that… ENTIRELY mattered, but being immersed in the illusion of his research into the keystones as being solely a historical piece he’d been asked to look into helped him forget that the Abyss was out there and very much real.
Which, sometimes, he found himself very much needing in recent days. Not that he ever anticipated he COULD hide away in the library forever, but, well…
At least his old friend seemed a bit more keen on this sort of thing than he’d ever been. Which, in hindsight, was sort of amusing - with her enthusiasm for the Abyss, it was as though they’d swapped roles, almost. Even if her interest was troubling and would probably inevitably get her killed. His brow creased a bit at the thought. If she went down alone…
No, no, this was the kind of thinking he was trying to prevent. Shuffling the papers in his hand again, he internally prodded himself to find something else to fuss over… which, honestly, wasn’t particularly hard, considering who he was speaking to.
“…Also, I overheard you’ve been working yourself to the bone again.”
He frowned, tilting his head a bit. Why was it that the more important someone was - either by role or by sentiment - they managed to become of greater concern?
“You’ve been… taking breaks, yes?”
Dia nodded as she took a copy of his report to file away for later purposes, mind addled with thoughts of what could be or solutions to finding a way further down into the abyss. Her mind always filled like this when it came to the centerpiece of the island.
Though she broke from her thoughts when Cinna asked her the important question.
“...that may or may not be true.” It most definitely was true, and a few researchers would be quick to confirm Cinna’s concerns. Doctor Jin certainly had an earful for her when she got dragged to his office again.
“I have been taking more breaks though.” She gave him a half hearted smile, standing from her desk, “And... well I have been working on my health. Somewhat.”
Training with the facility was definitely one way to get exercise. Though she had been more sore lately, “You don’t need to worry.”
But of course he’d worry. She knew he’d worry. But she liked Cinna all the same.

If there was one perk to training with the guild, was that she knew that this would probably improve her health. And if that improved, then there could potentially come a point where she could go on a solo expedition.
The thought made Dia smile.
But for now she was sore from cardio and sitting in the Adventurer’s end of the guild, face pressed against the surface of a cool break room table. Adventurer’s passed by her, not daring to bother her as she recovered.
She sighed, turning her head and resting her cheek on the table, meeting the eyes of another person in the room, “Can I help you?”

Charles sighed. “That’s a relief. The island may not need us, but the creatures of it might only benefit from a little help now and again.”
He scratched at his jaw. “We can only do our best to that effort. I’ll do everything I can on my end to ensure that you have the resources you need without too much interference.”
“Um.” Charles adjusted his reading glasses and looked over the list of requirements. “Give me at least a week for the first draft. I want to do it right. Keep in mind that I’m an engineer, not an architect. We might need to do some wiggling on the aesthetics at some point.”
Taking off his glasses, he looked back up at her and swallowed. “And, if I may ask, do you have any plans for tomorrow evening?”
“Aesthetic hasn’t been the primary goal of the Guild since the main building was made.” Dia laughed, “We need the function to be perfect with the environment. Function is the main goal.”
She began packing what few things she had with her and stood up, pausing when Charles asked if she had plans, “I... can’t say that I do. Work might try to keep me late again, but I caught up on all my translations.”
Dia fiddled with the straps of her purse, having a slight idea of what he wanted to say but she needed him to actually say it.
