āHey, can we talk?ā Jack says, drawing Nicoās eyes way from his notepad. Most roster guys have already filtered off the ice but a smattering of PTO guys and grizzled AHLers are still on the ice with Sarge.
Nico is supposed to get dinner with him and Chris and Lindy later, a get-together that will probably equal parts actual work and co-workers having drinks together at the end of the day. The version of āhanging with the boysā that comes with being in your 40s and 50s and 60s as well as behind the bench instead of on it. Theyāll discuss first cuts, sending the first batch of guys on their way. Nothing Jack has to be concerned with, but Nico highly doubts that hockey is what Jack wants to discuss with him right now.
āSure.ā
Looking up at Jack from his seat Nico pockets his notepad and pen. Heās back in his sneakers already, sitting in the middle of the bleachers, a full, unobstructed view of the entire ice surface in front of him. Jack is in shorts and underarmour shirt, slides on his feet. He smells like sweat, evidence of all the work he put in when he didnāt need to. His hair is pushed back under his Devils cap. He looks good. He smells good. Gay fucking catnip for a guy like Nico.
āWell?ā He nods to the seats to his left, keeping his feet on the back of the row in front of him.
āItāll be quick,ā Jack says with a jerk of his head, staying where he is ā standing. āI just wanted to like, make it clear. That Iām not-ā
He widens his eyes, like heās expecting Nico to fill in the blanks. Nico raises his eyebrows at him. Jack makes a noise, rubbing his hand down the front of his tight undershirt. Right over the visible outline of his abs, Christ. The sweat marks-
ā-like you,ā Jack finishes awkwardly, forcing Nicoās eyes to snap back up to his face. āIām not like you. Iām not gay.ā
Nico exhales through his nose and crosses his arms. āSo youāve said.ā
what if we entered the league together when there was a plague upon the earth and ran out our entry level contracts on a team going nowhere that fired their GM then let the new GM torture us extensively before agreeing to matching three-year contracts and then i was traded from you but by the time those three years were up we were reunited across the country and eagerly signing up for four more years together
