his wet cat vibes have bewitched me
Lilith did not really appreciate the sensation of being carried about while the elementals babbled about cute couples, but carried around she was, dropped rather unceremoniously onto a spot on the ballroom floor. Though, it appeared the elementals had the mind to grant her a small gift as well- a small card that found its way into her hand, one way or another. Reading it seemed be some description of some pet! Likely a cat, from what she could guess.
She wonders at the meaning of it. From the looks of it, the cat- Raven, he was called- was in need of a home and care. But the elementals didn't seem the type to be picking strays off the side of the road to help them out, and she worries that perhaps they would tease the poor thing too much and stress him out.
But before she can ponder for much longer, as she finished reading, a man, half flying, half dragged, came to an abrupt stop before her, barely catching himself. Oh dear... That was the exact reason she was concerned- if they treated people so roughly, how roughly would they treat a cat? Glancing down at her card again, and then up at him, she noticed that he had one as well! How odd. She blinks- was he the aforementioned cat’s owner? What was the purpose of the cards? Are they perhaps meant to be hypothetical?
Before she can say anything, he speaks, but she can’t quite make heads or tails of it. “Um… hi? Want you? For what?”
Oh, but that was rude of her, wasn’t it… Lilith coughed, embarrassed. “Sorry, I don’t think I understand what you mean? Oh! I do have a card that seems to describe some sort of cat- do you happen to have one?” She holds up the card for him to see.
His relief washed over him in a wave, though the sensation lasted only a moment as he felt his face flush with heat. Presumptuous. Rude.
He cleared his throat to apologize, his head inclined, but it seemed she was not quite done yet, and she flashed her own index card in his direction. She thought…that it was a cat? He could not imagine what must have been said on the card to lead her to believe that this was the case, the wheels in his head grinding a bit as he took a moment to redirect his composure.
"A cat…" he said finally, parroting the word somewhat slowly as Lilith smiled at him. "I'm…not sure…they allowed pets here," he eventually finished, clearing his throat and looking anywhere but at her earnest, smiling face. "I don't have any cats but…I'd be willing to help you find it…if you're looking?"
He could not believe how stupid he sounded at that moment.
Face blazing, Raven straightened. Might as well commit. "I'm…a decent tracker," he said, which was perhaps the first honest thing he had said the whole conversation, if perhaps the least relevant. "If there's a cat around here, we'll find it. I promise."
Why did he promise that? He knew there was no cat. What was wrong with him?
