Character Background
Family Background:
Lily was born to two very loving parents and an older sister. They were solidly middle class, with Vincent Evans being an accountant and Julia Evans being an English teacher. The family loved sports, going to local and professional football games when they could. Though she loved her parents, they were very protective of their youngest, to the point of underestimating her, which Lily never liked.
Biography Before 1979:
Lily was always the baby of the family, never wanting for anything, but there was a shift in the family dynamic one night in1963. The family went to a local football game, and baby Lily, being the adventurous scamp that she was, snuck away to get closer to the game. She sat down in front of a speaker and the next time there was a goal, she lost 80% of her healing. Now, her parents became even more babying and protective, which Petunia interpreted as favoritism, starting to plant the seeds of jealousy in her head, though those seeds would remain ungrown for quite a few years as the sisters remained best friends.
Lily grew up relatively normally, minus the unexplained magical events that would happen whenever she had an extreme emotion; she made a sink explode when she wasn’t allowed to go to a birthday party and made bubbles appear when she finally managed to do a cartwheel. When she was nine, she met Severus Snape, whom she began a close friendship. He told her about her being a witch and Hogwarts and all the things she had to look forward to.
When she got her letter, that was the straw that broke the camels back with Petunia. Lily’s best friend now wanted nothing to do with her, and Lily actually considered not going to Hogwarts to try and mend the relationship. However, after talking with Severus, she realized that this was where she belonged, and she just had to try and get Petunia back another way.
Lily’s sorting took a little bit of time, with the hat debating between Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, and Ravenclaw (she had ambition, but the hat knew her muggleborn status would not let her be successful in Slytherin). She valued bravery, she was very loyal and a hard worker, and she loved learning. Ultimately, when the hat asked for her opinion, she chose Gryffindor, wanting to think of herself as brave. And so she went and sat down at the red and gold clad table.
She may have been at the top of her class, but it wasn’t because she was just naturally good at magic. She worked hard, wanting to prove to her parents, the world, and herself that the “sweet little deaf girl” could be a force to be reckoned with. Even though she made friends in her own house, she stayed loyal to Severus, defending him from bullies like James Potter.
The rest is a tale that everyone knows. After a particularly cruel prank and Lily, once again, standing up for Severus and calling James an arrogant toerag, Severus called Lily a mudblood, and all the excuses she had been making for him all this time started to crumble. When she asked him directly if he was going to join the death eaters, and he didn’t say no, she knew her friendship wasn’t going to save him. She wouldn’t associate herself with anyone who saw her as less than.
She then slowly started letting her guard down around James Potter. If Dumbledore saw him as responsible enough to be the Head Boy to her Head Girl, then there had to be something there she wasn’t seeing, right? She started seeing qualities in him that she really liked, like his unwavering loyalty to his friends and his quick wit (when he decided to use it for good instead of for pranks). Her walls slowly came tumbling down, and she finally said yes to a date. They started a relationship, and even though she never thought she would be the kind of girl to fall fast, once she started falling, she couldn’t stop herself for falling head over heels in love with him, even saying yes to his very fast marriage proposal.
Biography After 1979:
After the death of the Potters, Lily was able to put all of her energy into the Order of the Phoenix, wanting to bring down Voldemort once and for all. She was set on helping in any way she could until she got pregnant, and she pulled back a little. She was going to help, but she now had a whole other person who she already loved and wanted to protect, so she needed to stay alive for him. She was thrilled to have a son with the love of her life, but with it came a bit of worry; they had to defeat Voldemort now.
When the prophecy came to light, Lily was more than happy to go into hiding, ready to protect her son in any way possible. Then, the night of Halloween in 1981, they were betrayed by someone they thought they could trust. Lily grabbed Harry and, though she didn’t want to leave James, ran upstairs with Harry. She saw the flashing green light as she ran into Harry’s room, knowing she had just lost the love of her life. She placed Harry in his crib, whispering and signing “Harry, I love you. Daddy loves you. You are so loved...”
When Voldemort offered to spare Lily’s life if she sacrificed the boy, she didn’t consider it for even a moment, simply begging for the life of her son. The last thing she remembers is seeing another flash of green and screaming.
Personality:
Lily is an incredibly kind individual, always trying to see the good in people. She is also fiercely loyal, sticking with Severus until he told her he was going to join the death eaters. Lily is hot headed (Harry didn’t just get this trait from his father), especially when it’s righteous anger regarding someone she loves. She is also stubborn, as James would know, considering how long it took for him to actually get a date with her. She feels things very deeply. She loves deeply, she hurts deeply, she hates deeply (though those instances are few and far between).
Occupation:
She is currently a full time member of the Order of the Phoenix. She was planning on becoming a curse breaker once the war was over, but once she got pregnant, she put those plans on pause, not wanting to add unnecessary risk to her life for fear of leaving her child motherless.
Headcanons:
Lily actually loves quidditch, but she’s terrified of flying. Flying in her first year was the only class she got below an E in
Potions was her best subject, as well as her favorite. She adored Professor Slughorn, and was honored to be chosen for Slug Club.
She can read lips with almost perfect accuracy if the other person doesn’t mumble or cover their mouth, but she much prefers sign. She can hear very loud noises as if she’s underwater, so major events she can still react to.
She speaks with a “deaf accent” that she used to be self conscious about, but she knows it’s a part of who she is and accepts it now.
When she gets mad, she tends to sign at lightning speed, so she has to take a second to close her eyes and breath in order to calm down, otherwise most people wouldn’t be able to understand her anyway
Her anger is a wet anger; whenever she’s really angry, her tear ducts open up and she hates it, she thinks it shows her weakness
