Snippet #10: heroes and villains
Trying this out, because the dynamic has so many ways it can go and I've been ✨inspired✨
Warnings: a bit of fighting at the beginning, swearing
The hero swung blindly at the thugs, dealing punches left and right until all but one were unconscious. They charged the hero with a small blade in their grip but the hero was ready for it twisted their arm to an unnatural angle with a loud crack! The hero hit them over the head with the dropped knife. The thug fell with a thud.
All because fucking sidekick decided to pull a disappearing act. They slid to the ground and tipped their head against the wall. Their eyes closed against the exhaustion, and somehow numbers and procedures were still swimming through their mind. Their superiors were planning a takedown of the biggest supervillain in the nation so their tasks had fallen to the hero and then sidekick had disappeared and the hero didn’t know what to think of it. Patrols had increased tenfold since gangs started cropping up helping minor villains, and the hero had to do all their jobs unaccompanied, missing their sidekick more each day.
They heard footsteps approaching the alley and groaned as they struggled to find purchase against the wall.
“That was quite impressive, taking them down on your own. But where’s your sidekick, shouldn’t they be helping you?” The hero squinted at the oncoming silhouette. They gave up standing and scooped their flashlight from the floor and pointed it at the stranger.
Or not so stranger. The villain’s face stared back at them from the darkness of the alley. They stepped closer. “Go 'way."
"You don't really want that." No, they didn't want that. The villain crouched in front of them, held out their gloved hand. "I can help you. I can take it all away."
Their voice was so soft and gentle and soothing, the hero wanted to believe it. But they really shouldn't, their job was at stake. Their side was killing them. They dragged a hand down their face and felt blood slide beneath their fingers.
Where was their sidekick? Why weren't they here to help? The hero shifted and felt a bolt of pain in their shoulders from the permanent knots there.
The villain's hand reached out and cradled their face. The hero leaned into it. Their voice came out slow and thick, "Please, I can't take it anymore. Just stop it all."
Quick as lighting the villain pulled off their gloves. Just as their fingertips were about to meet skin, the hero grabbed hold of their wrist, just before the end of their sleeve. They tasted blood in their mouth. "Promise me something. Promise me... you won't let Supervillain take over."
The villain smiled ruefully. "I'll try." They brought their hands to the hero's bruised knuckles. Standing up, they kept hold of the hero's hand. "Come with me."
When they started down the alleyway, the hero followed with blank eyes.
