The first drawing is an African leopard, I used charcoal to make it. It's 24 by 32 inches and I drew it in October of 2021. I don't think I really have a title for it, just "Leopard" would probably suffice. I don't really think of titles much.

This is a drawing of a clouded leopard I did in July of 2021. I used charcoal and a little bit of graphite. Charcoal is just my favorite media because I like how black I can get it without the shine like graphite gives off. This drawing is also 24 by 32 inches.

The artist that drew these is named Caden Fiddler. I only recently came across him and immediately thought of him as inspiring because of how much he improved within six years. He mainly works in graphite but he does all sorts of realistic drawings from tigers to flowers. The tiger he did in 2018 took him 85 hours.

This was inspired by Hancock's graphite sketch, called "creatures of the forest." (Bottom picture) He only had colored the eyes on his lion and made them red and I wanted to reflect that in this graphite and charcoal drawing of a tiger, too. His lion looked angry and I didn't want to convey that with mine, instead I wanted to do the opposite and make my tiger look more sad and vulnerable because I wanted the two cats to be similar but opposite of each other. I wanted it to symbolize a time of peace and neutrality and a time of heartache and betrayal. In my mind, I imagined that the two cats were each other's halves, despite them being different species and despite being done by two different people.

I also wanted to express the emotion in response of his lion. Though the emotions on the tiger and lion's face differ from one another like I've mentioned, I just wanted the emotion to stand out like his did.

I've never done an artist response piece before, and it made me look at his work in a different perspective since I had to create something in response to his. I had to think harder about my purpose and reason and creativity. I liked that, though. I liked thinking of ideas and solving it and coming to a conclusion and finally seeing results.

Hiking to the river behind my house exposed me to lots of colors. I like the little purple tree in the first picture because it stands out amongst a sea of green. The color of the water is neat, too.

I chose the eye balloon by Odilon Redon. It is significant because it is a parallel of the author Edgar Allen Poe's work. The eye represents the all seeing eye of God and is a symbol of the spirit rising from the swamp. It is important because it evokes mystery and questions about the spiritual realm and also because it was inspired by the famous author Edgar Allen Poe. It is art because the person behind it was creative and was inspire by the author. Redon created something mysterious and intriguing and used time, energy, creativity, and thought which makes the piece art. Redon was fascinated with black and thought it expressed his imagination and feelings better than any color. He used it to depict dark realms and plunge himself into the world of phantoms, monsters, and insomnia. It teaches us that there's so much more depth and meaning to black than it might seem and also that we all have our own interpretations and visions on what each color means to us.

What is the role of the artist?

The role of an artist is to use their creativity to the best of their abilities. They are to create things that inspire them, to capture moments that they love and spread messages or awareness, if possible, through their work. Whether that be through painting, sculpture, drawing, media, or anything they can think of. I also think the role of an artist could be to force people to look at things a certain way with a different perspective or meaning.

One of my miniature donkeys named Twinkie is pictured in the first two. The blue sky and green grass is beautiful in my opinion and her dark color stands out against it. The last two pictures were taken in the pasture and I thought green was almost overwhelming yet lush and pretty at the same time

I chose the painting titled "bombing." It's important because it tells a time from history which wad prevalent. It's also important because according to the website, phaidon.com, it came from a photo of an air raid during the world war, something Richter would've been familiar with.

It is art because someone took their time to paint it and capture a moment on a canvas. It's also art because of the creativity behind it because of the gray color and the message that comes with it.

Phaidom.com also states with a writer named Stella Paul, “Colour and form, carry the expression away from personal experience to a deadpan impassivity, It is a highly charged subject, distasteful and closed to discussion in postwar Germany. Thus Richter pushes the boundaries but keeps everything at a remove. Even though the imagery is very detailed, the work is stripped down to a veil of grey."

Paul says, “remove imagery completely and carry further Richter’s focus on the unique power of grey." Even Richter called grey “the ideal colour for indifference, fence-sitting, keeping quiet, despair."

It teaches us that gray, though not very noticeable, is a powerful color because it's not distracting nor is it too much. It can be used to create a more mellow or serious mood and it's just as great as any color.

In what ways do artists work with restrictions and rules? How might restrictions and rules help form ideas?

Restrictions and rules helps form ideas because it may help creativity. To think think outside the box and figure out something in a different way or something that may not be ordinary. It encourages deeper thought on what can and cant work and artists work with those restrictions by using their creativity to the best of their abilities.

Question: what distinguishes visual arts from design? What distinguishes visual art from craft?

Visual arts is a broad term and can describe multiple things. Visual art for example is more like paintings, drawings, etc but crafts are more like physical objects that you may be able to use in day to day life such as cups, garden pots, etc.

I am enamored by spring colors. Everything turns green as life begins to thrive from the winter's rain and spring showers. I love the soft green in all these pictures and the purple flower that stands out amongst it all.

Studio project update:

I've started working on the art piece inspired by Hancock's sketch of the lion of the forest. I've decided to have everything black and white except for the eyes, just like he did. The eyes of my drawing will be colored and I've got all my materials I will use.

As usual I love all the hen's colors and it's fun to take pictures of them. The uniqueness in color and pattern in their feathers vary.

My photo gallery on my phone is messy and unorganized. So, I arranged my hen's pictures by color. Of course, these are only a few pictures out of many I have, but I feel like they worked for the collage best. Golden, brown, gray, black & white, black, and white. It took a long time to do but it provided good entertainment.

What is the role of a viewer of artwork?

I think the role of a viewer would be to study and take the time to really look at the art. How does it make you feel? What colors or lack of colors did they use? What details stand out to you? What could the art mean from not just your perspective, but to others and the artist as well? The role is also to admire it but also have an opinion about it. It's okay to like or dislike a certain piece.
