I’m back because I’m upset and I want everyone to know
One third of GoFundMe campaigns are for necessary medical expenses. People are “donating” their vacation days so that a new mom can stay home with her baby. A college-educated homeless man stood on the street handing out resumes in desperation, begging for a job, any job. Multiple posts about parents buying teachers necessities like a car and school supplies went viral.
Twitter and the media highlight these stories as heartwarming examples of “sacrifice” and people “pulling themselves up by their bootstraps.”
I call bullshit. Only in a dystopian society would we feel anything other than horrified at the thought of people crowdfunding their most basic needs.

Soooo…that looks like someone peeled the moss off to make that design, and shaved more of it. And then put their initials in there. How utterly selfish.*
Don’t do this. It can take years for a colony of moss to establish itself on a surface, especially when it’s that thick. And some places, once disturbed, may not have moss grow on them again for years, if not decades. Moss is incredibly important to its ecosystem, and peeling it off the rock like this takes away valuable wildlife habitat and food, both for the things that eat the moss and the things that eat the moss-eaters.
* Yes, I realize that mining, logging and other large-scale activities are more destructive, but this particular photo is being shown off as “look at this pretty thing I made!” and induces people to create copycat art. In the face of all the destruction, can we just appreciate nature for itself for once, without feeling like we somehow have to improve upon it?
1. That’s barely any moss, fucking chill
2. Hardly anything eats moss, as it has little nutritional value. Typically only animals in the tundra will eat it.
3. While moss does serve a purpose in reducing erosion in an ecosystem, this is only if the moss is living on top of soil. This moss is on a rock.

People do enjoy nature by itself, quite a lot in fact. God forbid someone use nature as a form of self-expression.
People constantly take aesthetic things like this and then repeat them and THAT’S where the problem lies. Rock stacking is another “aesthetic” popularized by blogs and stuff a bit back that people began running around and doing - the issue isnt in the one, singular person damaging the moss or moving the stones - it’s in the ten’s or hundreds of copycats who go out into forests of to rivers and likeness and move things or damage things or rearrange things for the sake of “aesthetic”.
It’s not cool, even what seems to is to be a minor change can be very damaging to the local ecosystem, and again this sentiment of “its only a little moss/only a few stones/etc” leads to people just not caring and copying this sort of behavior.
Also, moss always serves a purpose. There are literally things LIVING INSIDE OF moss, as well growing interwoven with it and around it. Something doesn’t have to be food in order to be useful and necessary to the ecosystem.

Damaging nature is never a good thing and why not here on the side of caution and remind people to treat nature with respect instead of promoting actions that can damage the ecosystem especially if the actions are copied by many more people?
First of all, we’re not talking about rock stacking, we’re talking about taking moss off a rock. When you rip moss off you can put it somewhere else and it will grow. Stupid white hipsters are going to do that shit regardless. You might as well tell them to do it responsibly and place the moss somewhere else.
Second of all, this is basically like pulling fistfulls of grass out of a field. Even if a lot of people do this, it’s not going to have a major impact.
And nothing is being harvested! It’s simply being placed somewhere else. Moss is harvested anyways, although the moss harvesting industry is unsustainable, measures are being taken in order to regulate it. Moss (except for peat moss) is a renewable resource.
And don’t even bring up salamanders. Salamanders don’t live on top of rocks like that. They live on the ground, around mosses to keep their bodies humid. And again, this argument has nothing to do with rock moss.
And finally: “ Feel free to actually use Google and learn something”, excuse me, but I actually did do my research. I know quite a bit about moss so don’t assume I’m misinformed on the topic just because I have a different opinion than you.
Moss mats take from 10 to 20 years to regrow large enough to be harvested, which isn’t horribly exciting in terms of “renewable” especially considering that we still don’t know the extents of the impact of large scale moss harvesting even after having done it for so long. Improper harvesting methods DO damage more than just the moss -leading to either soil erosion or date of things such as rotting logs that both reduced the chances of moss mat regrowth AND destroys areas that are habitable by animals and available as growth areas for other plants and fungi.
You know, the animals and plants you skimmed over to complain about salamanders all because I included the full quote off of the site.
And again, it’s a matter of teaching people to respect nature in all cases. It’s a matter of teaching people that there’s no reason to disturb and damage nature for frivolous reasons. Moss doesn’t need to be damaged, trees don’t need our initials carved in them, we don’t need to collect hundreds or thousands of seashells over our lifetime, we don’t need to pick wildflower bouquets at the forest preserve -we don’t need to go around disturbing nature that’s already been disturbed quite enough nonhuman encroachment just to fulfill our personal aesthetic pleasures. If you wouldn’t litter in a forest then you sure shouldn’t be damaging things within it for no reason either.

Also, I want to share a quote from Gathering Moss: A Natural and Cultural History of Mosses by Robin Wall Kimmerer, who is herself a moss specialist. She wrote this after finding a remote area where the moss had been torn away by people who sell it for floral arrangements and other commercial purposes:
“And now my work begins, to catalog the aftermath. I feel like the photographer helplessly documenting a disaster, passive and unable to change the outcome. We find these spots where the moss pickers have been and become scientific witnesses to the destruction. Every scalped branch will be measured and tagged and examined for signs of re-growth. I’m looking hard for hope that these naked branches will have started to green up again. They haven’t. Maybe a trailing shoot here and there a lone branch ventures out onto the hard dry bark. The recovery is almost nonexistent. You don’t need a sophisticated analysis to see that, but I dutifully record my data. No one knows how long it will take for them to grow back. Maybe never. Most of these mats were as old as the trees themselves, and got started when they were just saplings.
“The intact part of the stand, though, yields enough measurements to stuff my data book as full as the moss pickers’ sacks. Every branch has at least a dozen species of moss, in a dozen different shades of green…And in the [pickers’] bag are also untold billions of beings who made that moss their home, like birds nesting in a forest. Scarlet Orbatid mites, bouncing springtails, whirling rotifers, reclusive waterbears, and their children; shall I say all their names in a requiem mass?” (Kimmerer, 2003, p. 153, emphasis mine)
This is a scientist saying this, someone who has dedicated her career to plants, and mosses in particular. I strongly recommend reading her book, because it’s a greater appreciation for mosses and the intricate ecosystems they are a part of than just about anyone has ever written. Maybe not a lot of beings eat the moss, but that’s hardly the only reason they’re valuable to their ecosystem.
Bryology (the study of moss) is my favorite branch of botany. Moss is fucking amazing and dissing it as “just moss” will emphasize your ignorance like a gaslight shining through a Fresnel lens. Without moss, you wouldn’t have any fruits or vegetables. No grasses. No plants. So be nice to the ancestors who allow us to have potatoes, and cherries, and mangoes. THANK YOU MOSS!
Do you know which mosses will grow on rocks? Brachythesium, mnium, and the whole dang politrichadae group (those are “giant mosses”) will all grow on rocks. Sphagnum will not grow on rocks. Unless they are bog rocks, soaking in a mire of acidic water. Note, none of these are called “rock moss.” That’s not a thing and it sounds vaguely like kindergarten name calling.. Because mosses will grow in many places as long as they get enough water, the same mosses that like rocks can also be found on any side of live trees, decaying trees, the ground, the dock, my father-in-law’s retaining wall. Mosses are great habitat for tiny critters, and while they aren’t tasty, they are edible
Fun fact - moss can grow in the sun if it’s wet enough. It can also grow in relatively dry shady areas, especially if the climate is humid. Moss has no roots and takes on water through its leaves. It can periodically dry up completely and bounce right back with a bit of hydration. My Chinese Forget-me-nots do not remember how to do this. They are such divas.
In conclusion, altering nature in a public space* like this is a hubris-laden travesty, and people who do it should have to roll large boulders up a mountain until they can understand that this isn’t trendy or cool. It does not add artistic value to the forest. It just highlights what a self-centered entitled piece of trash you are.
* Feel free to make ugly as hell moss art in your personal gardens. That’s a great venue.

deciding to do two years at a community college was the best decision I’ve ever made, hands down. It’s saved me some $50,000, and I met so many amazing teachers and faculty that have helped me immensely! I would completely recommend attending community college before a four-year college, whether that’s in high school or afterward! (:
I started off at a community college thinking I wanted to get a degree in psychology. A semester before transferring to a University I decided to get rid of my fears and pursue a career in Biology. I had to stay at community college for two more years taking the classes I needed to transfer. I got a degree in Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from a UC (UCSC) and graduated with ZERO DEBT.
There is nothing wrong with going to a community college!!! You save a lot of money
