‘5 a Day’ challenge (learn around 500 new words by 2018)

This wonderful post here got me thinking about how realistic and manageable learning five new words a day actually is, and I’ve come up with a challenge. It’s primarily aimed at language-learners, but if you have a butt-load of definitions to learn it could be useful (although, I recommend only learning 3 longer definitions a day) or for law cases if you just need the name and a sentence about the case eg - Ireland;Burstow (1997) - silent phone calls can be assault.

The challenge:

Starts - Monday 4th September Ends - Sunday 31st December

How it works:

Monday to Saturday, you learn five new words each day, and on Sunday you revise the words and focus on the ones you find difficult.

Monday to the next Saturday, you learn another five new words each day, and on Sunday you revise that week’s words AND the previous weeks’ words.

And so on.

Each Sunday you revise all the previous words - just a brief check for those you know, and spend a little more time on those you don’t.

By the end you’re should have learned around 500 new words!

I’ll do this with French! Learning the words will include writing them into my vocabulary notebook, adding them to a quizlet set for the challenge, and inventing an example (a sentence in which the word is used). Revision will include testing myself by covering the word in my notebook and writing down the ones I don’t remember on an extra sheet, going through the quizlet set and reading the examples!

It’s time for another lesson!

In this lesson we learn:

Three new adverbs:

곧: soon, right away, immediately

이따가: later, after a short while

나중에: later

A new future tense:

~겠다 form

Two new particles:

~(이)나: or (this is used with nouns)

~거나: or (this is used with verbs & adjectives/descriptive verbs)

The past tense stem

~ㅆ다

A new use for the particle (으)로

Can be attached to a direction (left, right, north, south, etc) or destination

We also review a few things:

The modifiers:

지난: last

이번: this

다음: next

The difference between the particles:

(으)로: used with general directions/destinations

에: used with specific destinations

And as a bonus, we’re even given a little 한자 lesson! However, I’ve opted to leave out that section in these notes so if you’d like to learn it, it’s section 9-6 of the lesson.
