Chiyo-chan fan art I made based on a sketch I made way back in 2006.

While my art progress hasn't been astronomically fast like many artists I've seen in recent years, I still like to look back and compare how far I've come since I started.

Not an impressive time frame for sure, but with the Rise of generative Ai I think this shows that, with enough patience, even someone without a natural talent can learn a skill.

Art is a sport

One common thing I see among artists who are just starting out is that they are very precious about their work -- ironically, way moreso than experienced artists. They need to get every line JUST right, because in their mind, getting that line just right is what stands between the piece being bad and it being good. I was like that too, for so long that I'm still struggling to catch up because of how it hampered my progress.

Being precious about every line is kind of like a track sprinter starting a run, but then restarting every time their foot lands in any slightly suboptimal way. This is comes off as silly, because we know that the "unit" of what they are doing is a sprint, and that they would make their greatest progress by finishing the full sprints, because that's how they train.

Well, similarly, the "unit" of art is a finished piece. What stands between the sprinter and the time they want isn't 1 individual step, but 1000 sprints. What stands between the beginner artist and making art they like the look of isn't that 1 line, but, i'm sorry to say, 1000 pieces.

Taking note of any mistakes you made afterwards is something done by both the experienced artist and experienced sprinter -- this is healthy and helps you improve. But you can do that later, after you're done.

That line is good enough.

Spunky Maid original character, based on a design I saw in a dream on Tuesday Morning (March 4th, 2025). Currently Named "Andrea"

In my dream, I was flipping through the pages of a sketchbook, and her design and art style quickly grabbed my attention. 

The character seemed to be drawn in what appeared to be a cardboard surface, colored entirely with Chalk pastels, outlined with white energetic strokes. The choice of colors in contrast with the background really made the character stand out.

From my perspective, it didn't look like anything I would personally draw (Up until now I guess), mostly based on the design of the character and the complete deviation from the materials and mediums I currently use for my work.

When I woke up that day, I quickly picked up a notebook I had near my bed, and I made a quick sketch to keep it as a reference.

Later I sketched this version of the character based on the reference from my notebook and the memories of my dream, trying to replicate the art style and medium I interpreted from it. This more or less as close as I can get to show you the drawing I saw while flipping through the pages of that mysterious dream sketchbook. 

Could it be a glimpse from another world or reality? Was it a drawing from my own future perhaps? Was it instead a drawing from an artist I have yet to meet?... Who knows, life is full mysteries, and I have sure experienced a lot of things I can't really explain over the course of my life.

Asakura Yoh from Shaman King 2005>>>2025 ✍️

I used to be a huge fan of Shaman King back in the day because of the 2000's anime adaption, so I frequently doodle him on notebooks and such.

I wanted to give it a new try with my new drawing skills, but I went with the manga look thinking it more closely connects with those old pencil black and white sketches.

Making a drawing of this quality was something I could only ever dream of back in the day, and while I probably have way more room for improvement, I'm really happy with the result.

Batman (TAS) + Carl Fredricksen (Pixar's "Up")

This one was based on a sketch of Batman I made a long time ago.

The face and expression I drew then always reminded me of grumpy old Carl Fredricksen from Pixar's "Up", so I pushed it a little further and made the connection clearer. A little bit of random idea, but that was the nature of the original sketch.

It took me a while to learn the skills to be able to paint Carl in a style that resembled his movie appearance, but I think I got a good result.

I included a portrait version I did with a different coloring style before I decided to do a full body drawing to make the idea clearer.
