EVENT PICTURE BY Carlo Alberto Mari
2-3 February 2013 “Western Front” Exhibition + Workshop with Stanley Greene and Teun van der Hedjen.
During 2-days of workshop with STANLEY GREENE and TEUN VAN DEN HEIJDEN you have a unique opportunity to see and understand how a photographer and a designer can work together to create a best-seller.
This is a topical issue in our contemporary market, where a successful photo book is a photographer’s weapon of choice to attract attention for a story. The workshop will begin focusing on Greene and Van der Heijden’s 4-years experience capped off with the publication of their top-selling Black Passport. During this time they worked closely; furthermore Teun took the approach of a documentary maker, interviewed Stanley at length and so being involved in both the visual and textual edit of the book, which spans Stanley’s whole career. Black Passport is an autobiography – a kind of scrapbook of the life of one of the most famous war photographers worldwide. It is both an extremely personal and seemingly objective experience. Black Passport is built around one long monologue of Stanley Greene, with non-sequential “scenes” taken from a portfolio of images from his professional and private life – a kaleidoscope of life experiences; a stunning, filmic book delivering a raw and blunt message. Stanley and Teun are working together on a new book ‘Western Front’. During the workshop they will talk about it. The workshop will also focus on the importance of editing, project communication, the techniques to show and graphically “dress” a photographic work, how to chose the right layout and the right style for your subject. Program:
Friday from 18,30 to 20,00: meeting with Stanley Green, Teun van der Heijden and Alessia Glaviano (Senior Photo Editor at Vogue Italia) and possibility to see the exhibition.
Saturday and Sunday from 10,00 to 17,00: workshop Registration is open! Write down to [email protected] or call +39 02 8738 2206 for info. Entry Fee 150 € normal rate 135 € photography student

Visual narratives: European borderlines
The project “Visual narratives: European borderlines” engages 12 young photography artists from Latvia, Turkey, Iceland, Portugal in a documentary exploration of the four countries representing geographical borders of Europe. The participants (3 from each country) will set to undertake personal projects – documentary and personal studies of the ‘borderlines’ in the duration of 9 months in their own and a resident country, followed by a joint editing workshop. The work will be supervised by experienced documentary photographers Vanessa Winship and George Georgiou, and supported by country tutors/coordinators. The result will be summarized in 12 individual projects as well as a joint visual narrative – documentation of “European borderlines”.
The Billboard Project is a series of photos by Zoe Strauss, displayed on 54 separate billboards, traversing dozens of neighborhoods in Philadelphia.
The billboards will exhibit Zoe Strauss’s photos without informative text, branding or logos. They effectively eliminate 53 spaces available for commercial advertising.
The Billboard Project is for both residents and visitors, and can be seen simultaneously as a homecoming and a journey. All four seasons are represented in the Billboard Project. And there are billboards with photos made in South Philadelphia and billboards with photos made in Alaska and the South of France.
The Project doesn’t represent a single place or time period. The Billboard Project is very loosely based on Homer’s Odyssey, a 10 year journey. The portraits in the Project are simultaneously residents, travelers and guides.
The Billboard Project is all questions and no answers. Beginning on January 12th, 2012, the entire Project will be up for 10 weeks.
