CAVEAT (2020) dir. Damian McCarthy
sorry still thinking about backrooms. about loops and piles and too many eyes and too much space and the idea of accumulation as distortion.
an accumulation of features on an uncanny face. walls accumulating into rooms. rooms that accumulate endlessly on top of each other. words on looping tape, greeting after greeting, language after language, communicating nothing. behaviours accumulating into patterns, patterns into self-schemas.
possessions accumulating into a hoard.
how did it start? who kept adding to the pile? it's not intentionally constructed but it's there anyway. piece by piece. wall by wall. room by room. it exists and now you can't take it back.
a monster as the distortion of the self. a hoard as the distortion of the home. a furniture stage room as a distortion of a life. even mary's shopping channel therapy schtick is a distortion of real healing.
the more you add, the emptier it becomes. with every loop the words mean less.
the more times it remembers something, the less it does.

does anyone have the poem about the author's little pet rat that died. it's a good poem not a stupid one. maybe it's not even about the rat it's about grief and. love.
