Behind the name: ATLiens.

In 1996, Outkast (André 3000 and Big Boi) released their sophomore album “ATLiens”, with singles such as ‘Elevators (Me & You)’ and the title track ‘ATLiens’. The album was a major hit with critics and fans that would go on to achieve double platinum status, selling over two millions copies in the US.

A lot of discussion has been held over the meaning of the album’s name. André 3000 said back in 1996:

“The ‘ATL’ for Atlanta. The ‘aliens’ for our status in the hip-hop game. Being an alien is just being yourself when people don’t understand you. We just trying to let everybody know there’s a place for everybody in this world. You just gotta find yourself, and be true to yourself.”

In 2010, he expanded that answer into:

“We were for real. I wasn’t talking about myself. We knew somebody had to be out here in the universe other than just us. So when I talked about IFOs ‘landing in Decatur’, I knew some folks had already seen that shit: identified flying objects.”
