As the dust settles and i can bear to think about this season, it is quite telling that despite the heavily racialized violence enacted towards louis (and the treatment of every single black character on screen), racism as a concept is quite literally never brought up in the narrative. Even the scene where daniel tells louis tv execs weren’t interested in a black man’s voice ("no, we want the white guy") meant nothing: what we originally thought was the foundation for broader racial commentary within the season and a way to question audience reception bias and sidelining of black voices (in line with the scene of the trial and its examination of white-centric fan reception) was just a throwaway line in an unending list of throwaway lines, and feels almost cynical in hindsight. Yeah! We sure know you wanted the white guy; it has been made abundantly clear.
At the end of the day, iwtv will always be remembered as a beautifully written, beautiful researched text interested in the intersections between race, gender and the concept of monstrosity and immortality. TVL will go down as a reactionary tv show that isn’t just apolitical and uninterested by race but is actively and cynically antiblack as well as being fundamentally anti-victim.
can someone at the next sdcc panel do that to rolin jones please
if youre black and planned on watching the finale of tvl, don’t. they have the man who lynched Louis carve a branding onto him while his head is severed from his body. there is nothing to see but pure and plain hatred of black people, of louis and jacob especially. jacob is being publicly humiliated and paraded around like this is a slave auction by rolin jones and hannah moskovitch and amc all together and i can assure you I personally will never watch a single second of anything amc makes and this will go down in textbooks next to birth of a nation for graphic grotesque whitelash and punishment of black ppl for Black Lives Matter movement. don’t watch this and let the black people in your life know not to watch it either
Something really needs to be said about the amount of queer shows with queer fandoms that are weirdly apathetic towards racism and misogyny.
i need to change my dn holy shit
incredibly sorry for the black writers and directors of the previous two seasons who thought they were building something. I am so sorry that your work was not respected and now dismissed by this new season. I am so sorry that the love and care with which you crafted the characters, especially of Louis and Claudia was so resented that the current writers' room chose to dilute all. I am so sorry that you are having to see the anti blackness in full force on a formerly black led show and everything you worked on- your vision- it was all wiped off. I am so sorry to Jacob and Delainey for having to work with those scripts.
Currently in a saw trap of my own creation. (Having the maturity to know that things dont always go according to plan while still experiencing the Big Feelings. The limbo between wanting to crash out and keeping it shut cause I know exactly why things are the way they are)
I've seen a bunch of "fandom etiquette" posts on my dash today and I'm going to say something that is maybe going to be unpopular but;
The absolutely pervasive mentality that unwanted criticism or critique shouldn't be given and should be ignored is why fans of color don't stay in fan spaces.
And I am not going to mince words here:
A lot of you are racist. A lot of your fan works are racist.
That might have been difficult to hear. And if it was, you should probably reflect on why that was.
"Fandom etiquette" has created a space where fans of color either bite our tongues and eventually leave or say something, get dogged on, and then eventually leave.
So much of "fandom etiquette" seems to be about insulating creatives from Feeling Bad and hostility to any kind of negative feedback is a pretty big contributor to why bigotry festers in these spaces.
