sometimes i go back and think about 2011 to 2018 Taylor swift era and then i come back to reality and think WTF want wrong how did she end up here.

It’s pretty tragic.

I think in some way, this was always the goal—to be a sort of “all powerful” celebrity, a billionaire, the most famous and beloved artist in the world. The trouble is, she doesn’t know when to stop, and nothing will ever be good enough for her.

The rich always want more money. More power. More everything.

So it didn’t matter that she had the respect of the whole world with folklore, nor that she was heralded as some sort of feminist hero for the Eras tour. She still wanted more.

Now we’re seeing the byproduct of that as the world opens its eyes to how awful she is. I’m not sure she’s fully registered it yet.

this post is only a little bit a cry for help

i've been aware of taylor swift since red. I remember trouble coming on over the speakers at summer camp. I remember hearing wildest dreams for the first time as a preteen and feeling scandalized.

I've been listening to her actively since lover. I remember watching the king of my heart lyric video over covid, and watching edits of willow to john muleany clips.

I've been involved in the fandom since 2023. I remember dressing up and listening to speak now tv and watching the 1989 tv announcements on tiktok the day after. I remember sitting around making friendship bracelets with my highschool friends for the eras tour movie. if you scroll back on this blog you'll see a lot of that. I downloaded swiftalert and made widgets ln my home screen counting down the days until my eras tour show

i put lyrics in my bios and it was the thing people knew me for. I bought posters off of etsy and cds off of ebay. I posted theories and clowned for rep tv off of the font on 1989 taylor's version. I was a huge swiftie, it was one of the primary ways i defined myself, right up there with being trans.

and I love ttpd. I love the throughline of instability and insanity of the album + the anthology. i got all the cd variants and I glued one of the bolter photo cards to my graduation cap. (ended with the slam of a door but she's got the best stories)

that album got me through the worst friendship breakup of my life. it got me through moving out of my small hometown and all the things i was to the people i used to care about.

i loved taylor swift.

but since this album came out. oh god. not only do i not love the album like i did poets (my apologies to the people on here i was snippy with who said this already, you were right), the things ive seen this go around. i just- the magic is broken. she's worth more that $2B. this album is mediocre. the racism/anti black points people have brought up seem just. so so much more true than they did with i hate it here (I'm white, listen to poc, and specifically black people in this case, some posts are linked at the end). the varients after varients of this fucking album. I was already kinda feeling this way when roll out started and i bought NINE cds. 5 of them are the exact same cds, they just come with what is probably low quality jewelry or a poster. (the other 4 have 2 bts bonus tracks each and do not even come with a lyric booklet). I do understand that that's my fault for spending the equivalent of almost 150 of my local currency on this album, but the fact that 150$ for not even all of the varients, for cds alone just strikes me as greedy

I understand that she is a business woman. i understand that she is interested in album sales because they contribute to grammy nominations and it isnt all strictly monetary, but if she didn't care about the money she would donate 100% of the sales to charity no? if i were in her position thats what i would do. unless im missing something there is no reason she couldn't give large portions of her wealth away. not even to politically dicy charities. no one likes child hunger, give money to the world food programme.

and on the topic of politics. I know she didn't support donald trump. I know she associates with a lot of left wing people (her fiancée and his family, etc). but sabrina carpenter has very publicly voiced support for trans rights. not a peep from taylor. nothing (to my knowledge) about the gazaian genocide. she is worth 2B usd, and i understand that a lot of that is assets and real estate and loans or whatever and not literal money on a debit card, and she donated a couple million (i do not know exact numbers) to food pantries in cities she toured in. that's not nothing and im glad that more people have gotten to eat because of her but the last time she spoke up about things like this (besides instagram political endorsements) was 2019. in miss americana she said she was sick of being silenced more or less and she has been silent pretty much ever since.

it's so incredibly disheartening. I can sort of understand wanting to stay silent for a little while so as not to scare away parts of your fanbase, but children are dying sick and hungry. people are getting shot and bombed and killed and begging for life on fucking tiktok. people are using her name in comment sections to boost engagement so that parents can afford to feed their children in a warzone and she has stayed silent.

and then theres the ai. I am once again reminding you that she is worth more than 2B usd and instead of hiring the best people on the planet to edit easter egg videos she used ai. instead of mistreating people or convincing fans to create those videos for free (which she absolutely could have done) she used ai. i dont have another explanation of these

this is the same taylor swift who is always talking about artistic integrity and the right to own one's work. this is the same taylor swift who last year was like. digitally sexually harassed or whatever you want to call it by ai deepfakes of her. when you search "taylor swift ai" that is still primarily what comes up. what the actual hell.

not to mention the fact that i am tired. most of us are tired. an album every 2 years us one thing. 6 albums in 6 years is another (lover, folklore, evermore, midnights, ttpd, tloas) (2019-2025). or 10 albums in 6 years depending on your world view. less than a year after the eras tour ended she announced another album with around 20 variants for 12 songs. she went on a press tour. she premiered a music video in theaters. and now she's going on good morning america, for what? who knows? it's not a tour or retirement. it feels like the motivations may have changed considering this is more than triple the pace of the way she operated in the first half of her career

i started this post with the question of how to retain the magic i felt pre showgirl but honestly- i don't know if that's possible for me. if it is for you I'm happy for you. I'm glad she/this fandom can still make you happy. I'm not trying to start a war, if you can look past the ai, if you know of more charities that she's donated to and that's enough for you, if you feel seen by one of these new songs, that's great; but for me i think the magic's gone for good.

even of opalite isn't about travis's exes i can't unhear that now. even if CANCELLED! isn't supposed to be a maga anthem i can't unhear it now. i love the bridge of eldest daughter but the rest of the song feels mediocre. I love her voice on tfoo but the lyrics don't speak to me.
