Another of Philip McCaffrey's books, he also appears to have listed Jesus's roind table in the back of the book.. He did not date the book so Im not sure when he was a Sophomore but its in less messy condition then his Homers Odyssey which he had signed #1936

Found under a house in #Vallejo CA, young Thomas McCaffrey had several books under the house. He also apparently made notes in the back.. The Catholic school St. Vincents still stands.. The book is dated #1926, its is one of two #Ivanhoes found in the stash.

I got this book from the local used book store.  They have a section dedicated to antique books.  The book is in good condition, no other writing outside of the one seen above and one in the upper right hand corner that says “office and Joe”  The book was published in 1895 and sold for .35 cents.

F.E.Dickinson owned this book in 1881, on the title page under James A. Garfield, Dickinson wrote, " Assassinated by Chs J. Guiteau July 2nd 1881. Died from the effects of the same Sept 19th 1881". The book was printed in 1880 before the assassination so we can assume Dickinson was annotating for history. This book was written by Charles Carleton Coffin a war correspondent.

This copy of the Monroe Doctrine was owned by the Hispanic Foundation with the folder being from the Library of Congress. Inside was the Monroe Doctrine printed in Mexico and in Spanish. This copy is dated 12 Dec 55. Someone on the title page added General Rosecrans full name.

Goodes School Atlas apparently owned by the Military Intelligence Service Library. Two signatures appear at the top, LH Parkhurst and a second I can not read. Gorgeous color maps.

Dated Sept 7, 1861 from NY an illustrated newspaper has a plea from the Office of the Assistant Treasurer US asking for money from the people to "carry the nation through a great crisis" Using Napoleon as an example of the people funding his dynasty.

The London Chronicle dated July 20 to July 22, 1780. The paper almost feels like rough fabric, and has a book feel though clearly it is a newspaper journal. While battling the colonials for America, an article discussing Mr. Washington was printed in this paper, oddly it is a positive article. He was well favored by the English. Also of amsument is an add for Teeth, Scurvy in the Gums and Tooth Ach. Mr. Greenoughs Tinctures.

Niles Weekly Register is another favorite, dated July 13, 1816, a inquiry titled Peace and War asks if war should be taken to Europe and speaks to a Christian society of Philanthropists that questions the motives of such and organization. An open letter to the inquiry is answered by both Thomas Jefferson and John Adams.

One of my father's favorites is this newspaper dated July 2, 1838. One of the big reasons is the small, almost insignificant little tidbit located on the bottom of the second page. It references a then LT Robert E Lee when he was a Army Corp of Engineers working on a project in Saint Louis, well before he was The Robert E. Lee.

My father also collects historic newspapers. This one dated Sept 21st 1863, makes reference to a desperate battle near Chattanooga, opposition to the French invasion, and it only costs 3 cents.

The Bridge of San Luis Rey is dated 1927 but has an interesting clause on the title page indicating it was published in compliance with War time regs for the conservation of paper and other essential materials. I have never seen that clause and thought it very interesting.

The Young Yagers, A Narrative of Hunting Adventures in Southern Africa is not what we would call a politically correct book but it clearly was written in another era. I believe the book dates from 1857 based on my scant Latin.

Here is one of the books of my childhood. A beautiful Tales of Shakespeare compiled by Charles and Mary Lamb. It is not dated but the intro is from 1878. My mom indicates it was a wedding present from her sister , though clearly it was owned by Mr. Winkleblack.

So while recouping from surgery at my parents, I decided to document their antique book collection.. some I purchased for them, some they purchased themselves and others I remember from my childhood. This one above I'm not sure where it came from but as you can see its dated 1922 clearly as a gift. It is a beautiful book.
