Send me âDadâ and a question and my characterâs Dad will answer it.
â - "Attack hug!" Nod took a flying leap from the arm of the couch, landing on Nod with the fox teeth's back and wrapping his arms and legs around him.
Nod staggered at the sudden weight on his back, craning his neck to get a look at his attacker. âNOD! What are you doing here? Ronin didnât tell me you were visiting.â
âI fell down a hole,â the boy snuggled against his back, âbut I landed on squishy moss and it didnât hurt, and then the nice ladybug lady was there, and she said to wait here and she would find you, and then you came in and you looked sad so you needed a hug because when Iâm sad Ronin hugs me and then Iâm not so sad and when Ronin looks sad I hug him and he smiles and says it makes it better.â
ââBut it looked eata... edi.. able... like some you eat!" the boy's brow wrinkled in confusion.
Nod chuckled at the little boy, he looked so confused, âWhy would I have something to eat in my bathroom?â
He put on a pot of mint tea to brew. The little Nod would need something to get the taste of soap out of his mouth,
âBut it smelt like a cookie,â Nod said sullenly, gnawing on the fiddlehead pickle Nod with the fox teeth had given him.
It was sharp and a little salty and it made his mouth tastes a little less like soap.
âAnd it looked like the pretty sweets that Queen Tara has when we have tea,â he continued, âand things shouldnât look like sweets unless they are.â
âAnd you shouldnât eat things without asking first.â Nod said pouring the tea. âSome people like things to look pretty and decorative. Thatâs why the sweets Queen Tara has look so pretty even if theyâre just for eating. And why some people make and buy overly fancy soaps.â
Adding some honey to the tea, he handed the cup to the boy, âHere this should help.â
Nod gulped down the tea, and it tingled on his tongue, getting rid of the last of the soapy taste.
âBut it was out and no one was eating it,â Nod licked a little dribble of honey from the edge of the cup, âif it belonged to someone, wouldnât they be eating it, or put it away so people know itâs theirs? Ronin says I should keep my food in my cupboard and not leave it out because thatâs how he knows itâs mine.â
The boy took another big swallow of tea, dribbling a little down his chin, âand every time I see Miss Glory she tells Ronin if Iâm eating enough or not, and she tells him I can have snacks whenever I want, but when I say honey brittle should always be my snack, she says no, but sometimes Ronin lets me have honey brittle for a snack, but sometimes we have bread and jam or dried fruit or nuts.â
Nod pouted again, âbut not soap, because itâs not for eating and our soap is better because it smells like Ronin and it doesnât pretend to be sweets.â
Nod poured himself a bit of tea and sat down. âIt was out because it was for washing your hands. You donât want to be hunting for soap when your hands are dirty.â
âAlso even if they had been sweets, what if they had been for a party that would have been spoiled if you ate them before the other guests came?â He asked
âBut it didnât look like soap or smell like soap, so how do you know to wash your hands with it even if itâs out?â Nod wiped his chin with his sleeve, âand if there was a party, there would be lots of people, because Mai says that parties are when lots of people get together and play games and eat and stuff, and I wouldnât be there because I donât like when thereâs lots of people and when there are too many people Ronin carries me and if Roninâs not there I cry until Ronin comes and carries me, or Miss Orla or Mrs. Marne.â
The boy thought for a moment, âbut I would share if there was a party, because Iâm good at sharing and Eben and I share toys and cookies and honey brittle.â
ââBut it looked eata... edi.. able... like some you eat!" the boy's brow wrinkled in confusion.

The Nest (closed RP with wildchildnod)
âYes! Thatâs what nests are for!â Nod answered, helping the hatching climb in. Barely getting both the boy and his backpack inside âRonin sometimes tells stories to me in here. And I have lots of shinies, and itâs my favorite nest.â
Nod reached up to stroke the sedum that acted as the nestâs light filling the small space with a gentle glow. Beaming he look at the small boy âDo you like it?â

âLet me guess. You never requested an upgrade after making Lieutenant? I know I didnât. â Ronin chuckled, turning to lead his double through his home. âIt was pretty hard to move Nod from the healers ward to here once the cast came off. He didnât understand what the couriers were doing with his things, and tried to carry a bunch of his stuff himself. I count myself lucky I managed to limit him to carrying his food stash, favorite blanket, and favorite plush.â
Ronin walked them through the kitchen toward to office. âStill I was surprised by how big this place is. The office is nice though.â
Nod squirmed out of his backpack and looked around, eyes wide, âitâs wonderful!â
There were stuffed animals sitting nestled in the blankets and treasures hanging from the roof. As Nod wiggled to get settled among the pillows he felt the nest sway.
âIt rocks!â he squealed gleefully and began rocking back and forth to try to get the nest to move more.

âActually, Finn and I shared an apartment all the way up until I got promoted to second-in-command. Then it just made sense to live by myself. The unit weâre in now was the one that happened to be available in officersâ quarters at the time. Theoretically, I could have waited for a bigger unit to open up, but I was living by myself and almost never home, so there didnât seem to be a reason to.â
Ronin looked around the comfortable office thoughtfully, âan office would be nice though with how much I end up working from home now. The dinner table works out alright for us though. Nod likes to sit on my feet underneath it and play while I work.â
Nod laughed moving with the hatching as they begin to make the nest swing higher and faster.Â

âSomething are always the same. If Marne and Onion arenât here for lessons, Nod likes to play in here while I work. I end up reading reports out loud. Why those entertain Nod Iâll never understand.â
Stepping out of the office, âWait till you see the upstairs. And the view from the balcony is gorgeous.â
âI had to stop reading him reports when he started signing,â Ronin laughed, âhe wanted me to tell him who everyone in the reports were, and why they had done what they did, and if the report has gotten as far as my desk, that often defies explanation.â
Ronin followed his double up the stairs and heard the sounds of shrieks of laughter and excited yelling.
âThe boys sound like theyâre having fun,â Ronin grinned.
The Nest (closed RP with wildchildnod)
Nod swung the hatchling around as he chirped happily. âI have dried fruit! And I have a nest!â
Nod set the hatchling down and took his hand âCome on! Iâll show you!â Leading the hatching Nod raced down the room and up the stairs.
Ronin laughed at two. âWhy donât I give your a small tour? They assigned me a pretty big place when I finally requested the upgradeâ
Nodâs legs were not quiet as long as chickadee Nodâs, and he had to run twice as fast to keep up going up the stairs, but that was alright. He was extra fast for his size; Ronin had said so.
When they got to the top of the stairs, the other Nod led him down the hall to his room. Nod knew that his friend liked to make nest like he did, so he had thought he had built one on his bed, but that wasnât what his nest was at all.
âItâs the best nest ever!â Nod cheered, clapping his hands and bouncing in excitement.
Hanging from the ceiling of the other Nodâs room was a tear drop shaped nest made from woven sticks, and inside was piled high with fluffy blankets and pillow.
âCan we go in?â the boy asked excitedly.
************
âThat would be great,â Ronin agreed, âI keep thinking that I should put in for an upgrade, but Nod is so settled in his room now that I donât want to move him. I didnât think I was that far behind on upgrading my living quarters though. This place is huge.â

Ronin waited in living room with Nod who was bouncing excitedly from one foot to the next, occasionally looking toward the front door. Â He had told him that his young friend would be visiting, though he wasnât sure Nod understood just how their duplicates were coming. An odd hum and a whoosh sounded through the apartment and then a large hole opened in his wall, his double, and the younger Nod stepping through.
Ronin tried not to laugh at the size of the bag the younger Nod carried. It looked like he must have brought half his playroom along. His Nod, chirped out a greeting, just managing to sign one as well before rushing to hug his little friend.
âWell looks like this Quinn managed to be useful for onceâ He remarked nodding to his guests, âHello, Nod, Roninâ
âI brought toys for us!â Nod hugged his friend, his feet kicking excitedly in the air as the older boyâs hug lifted him off the ground a little.
âItâs good to see you on purpose for once,â Ronin smiled and shook his doppelgangerâs hand, âNod has been plotting what theyâre going to do together all week.â
I have honey brittle for us to share, Nod chirped happily at chickadee Nod.
Nod liked talking with someone who understood chickadee. Words were good and they had lots of uses, but it was more fun to make chickadee sounds.

âI didnât do it!â Quinn winced when he came up through his tunnel and spotted the crabby jinn general standing there.
Ah, but he had a bottle in his hand, and that was probably worth getting yelled at again.
Ronin raised an eyebrow at the blue caterpillar and held out the bottle to him, âweâd like to visit one of the other versions of Nod.â
âChickadee Nod!â the boy holding the generalâs hand said excitedly.
âOh, that one,âQuinn nodded, reaching for the bottle.
âCan you do that?â Ronin held the bottle just out of his reach.
âYeah sure,â Quinn agreed, looking longingly at the bottle, âjust need a little liquid substance.â
Ronin rolled his eyes and handed him the bottle.
âWeâre going to play,â Nod told the caterpillar happily, swinging his and Roninâs hands, âI brought toys and games for us to with play, and buttons and beads that we can trade.âÂ
âMmm-hmmm,â Quinn tipped back the bottle, gulping down a few swallows.
Ronin gave him and impatient glare, and Quinn stopped drinking to open a tunnel. For someone with such a cheerful kid, the general certainly was sour.
âThank you,â Ronin tipped his head to the caterpillar slightly, then gave Nodâs hand a squeeze and lead him to the tunnel, âcome on Nod, time to visit your friend.â
âI brought honey brittle too,â Nod skipped beside him into the opening.
Quinn shook his head and went back to his bottle. He was half way through before he remembered to close the tunnel behind them. Just as the tunnel closed a happy thought occurred to the caterpillar.
If they went one way, they had to go the other, and that would mean another bottle for him.

Reblog if you are a fanfiction author and would like your readers to put one of your fic titles in your ask + questions about it
1. What inspired you to write the fic this way?
2. What scene did you first put down?
3. Whatâs your favorite line of narration?
4. Whatâs your favorite line of dialogue?
5. What part was hardest to write?
6. What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
7. Where did the title come from?
8. Did any real people or events inspire any part of it?
9. Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
10. Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
11. What do you like best about this fic?
12. What do you like least about this fic?
13. What music did you listen to, if any, to get in the mood for writing this story? Or if you didnât listen to anything, what do you think readers should listen to to accompany us while reading?
14. Is there anything you wanted readers to learn from reading this fic?
15. What did you learn from writing this fic?
I think Iâve reblogged this before, but it would be fun to get more questions. My stories are here and here.
(Also, I would have just reblogged this straight from eastofthemoon, but tumblr was being difficult with formatting. You should go ask her questions too.)
This would be fun to do for the Wander Home Series, so feel free to drop any of these in the ask box for it (you can specify a scene or a part if you want). :)
For your Wander Home series: 4. Whatâs your favorite line of dialogue?5. What part was hardest to write?
Those are good ones!
For 4, probably when Nod says âIâll go stay with Ronin, then,â after he finds out Ronin has been injured and will have to stay in the healers ward for a few days (from this snippet - I feel like itâs kind of cheating to use this one, since I havenât finished the third story arc yet, but I did post this part of it already, at least).
It pretty much sums up how simple things are for Nod. If Ronin is there, then thatâs where heâs going to be too. Itâs the adults that keep complicating things.
For 5, writing the scene where Barnet is really mean to Nod when he takes custody of him in Lost in the Woods. I think I wrote all the scenes around it, and was quite a ways past it in the story, before I actually went back and wrote that one. I just donât like writing scenes where people are really mean to children (and sadly there was no room in the story for anyone to smack Barnet for doing it, although Ronin came close).

Cider hummed to herself as she sat on the branch of the apple tree and dropped apples into the basket below. Â âWow, this tree has awesome apples,â she said as she took another one. Â âI bet I could make a great pie from this.â
little-nod:
âI like apple pie,â Nod said, looking up at the witch with Cheep-Cheep held in his arms, âI could help you. Iâm good at helping. When Ronin cooks, I stir and sometimes I taste things to make sure Ronin is making them right, and then after we make pie, we could eat it.â
ciderthewitch:
âOkay!â Cider exclaimed as she jumped back down and picked up the basket. Â âWe can also make an apple cake too if you want?â Â She took the little boyâs hand as they started to walk. Â âApple cake is really yummy.â
little-nod:
âI like cake!â Nod swung their joined hands, âIâve never had apple cake. Iâve had tiny apple pies that were just for one person each and apple cider. I like apple cider! Your name is Cider, so you must be really good at making apple cider and we can drink some while weâre making pies and cakes.â
ciderthewitch:
Cider giggled.  âActually, Iâm better at pies and cakes,â she replied.  âMy mom was the real apple cider expert.  Itâs why she named me âCiderâ,â she gave a sigh.  âItâs a weird name, but I suppose I should be thankful since she could have named me âAppleâ.â
little-nod:
âYour mom named you after things she really liked, so that must mean she really liked you,â the little boy said solemnly, âRonin gave me my name, and that makes it the bestest name, but your name is still good, and I gave Cheep-Cheep his name because I like saying cheep! cheep!â
Nod bunny hopped on each âcheepâ.
âWhatâs in apple cake?â Nod asked the witch, âit there honey and frosting and does is smell yummy when itâs baking? Does it have to bake for a long time? We could play games while it bakes. You could teach me new games. I like learning new games.â
ciderthewitch:
âThereâs no frosting, but it has apples, cinnamon, brown sugar and good stuff like that,â Cider explained. Â âIt does take awhile to cook, so playing a game would be a good idea! Â Have you ever played checkers?â
little-nod:
âRonin showed me once, but Iâm not very good at it,â Nod said, âbut I like when the pieces hop over each other and then they get to the other side and you get two piese and that makes them better.â
Nod followed Cider into her house, still holding her hand.
âWe should make apple cake right now,â the boy told her, âCheep-Cheep and I will help and then if we make it right now, we wonât have to wait so long to eat it, and we can play checkers, but youâll have to show me how to play again because I donât remember how the pieces go and then weâll play lots and Iâll get better at it because Ronin says when you do something lots you get better at it, then when weâre all done playing and weâve gotten really good at it, weâll eat apple cake and it will be good and weâll have fun all day.â
