@maggiemeichance: can i meet the kittens when i come back from tour?
A jolt ran through Amy as the other girl complimented her. Admittedly, the bar was in hell right now, given the somewhat snarky tone that she seemed to deliver it with. Amelia could barely tell if it was deliberate or entirely accidental, so instead she opted for a tight-lipped smile and pushed forward with the task at hand, instead. Maggie seemed all too eager to jump at the prospect of escaping from Tim – maybe he was awful and rude and as dumb as rocks, or maybe he was just a man. She had no idea, but there was no denying that the critically acclaimed popstar was practically frothing at the mere prospect of being able to follow Amy away from the table.
Truthfully, Amelia wasn’t even sure if she wanted to be alone with Maggie. Things were always so turbulent between them, with Amelia never knowing if they’re coming or going. One minute the other girl was all over her and practically preening under her attention, the next she was rude and dismissive, turning her nose up at the mere suggestion that she might actually be attracted to her. Amy wasn’t under any false pretense that Maggie might like her, but if the other woman’s head between her thighs had been anything to go by, she was, at the very least, confident in their mutual attraction.
Maggie never seemed to share that sentiment, however. She insisted she was so not into girls, and had a tendency to be a little volatile if pressed. The moment Amelia had fallen into bed with her, it had become clear as day that she’d bitten off more than she could chew. Yet, there she stood, seemingly a glutton for punishment as she attempted to free the other woman from the clutches of this, quite frankly, boring man. The same man who seemed to be turning his nose up at the pair of them, mumbling something under his breath about how it doesn’t take two chicks to change a tampon, at which point Amelia rolled her eyes pointedly in his direction before she found herself being whisked away by Maggie.
If their fingers entwined was having any sort of effect on her, she wasn’t letting on. She kept her gaze straight ahead as the other girl pulled her along and pointedly ignored the pounding of her heart against her ribcage. She held her breath, biting down on her lip as she tried not to utter a word until they were alone. Her head was swimming, conflicting emotions swirling in the pit of her stomach as she wondered just how pathetic she must be to let herself get so easily wrapped up in a pretty girl who’d never been anything but mean to her. Even as Maggie thanked her, Amelia remained silent, letting herself be pulled along until they came to a halt in the tiny, crowded bathroom, at which point Amelia finally dropped Maggie’s hand and shoved her own into the pocket of her skirt, out of reach.
“You don’t have to–” Amelia protested, eyes wide as Maggie scolded the perfect stranger. It was a wasted effort, however, as the other girl blushed profusely and scurried out of the public bathroom.
Amy frowned. That hadn’t been kind, and she doubted Maggie even realised. Other people’s feelings were merely an after thought to her, clearly.
“Why would it matter to me if he was?” she mused, sighing. She felt herself deflate, already wondering why she’d gone to such efforts to free Maggie from Tony – or was it Tom? Maybe Tim?
She remained still, her free hand fiddling nervously with the ends of her hair, as she tried to keep her chin high. If she wanted to get out of there alive – and with her pride intact – she needed to stand tall and keep her head high. Maggie was much prettier and far more intimidating than Amy, and right now she was certain she’d fold under little to no pressure at all.
“It’s none of my business what men you date,” Amy noted, being particularly pointed with her emphasis now that they were alone. If Maggie wanted to play the innocent heterosexual card, then she could be her guest.
Maggie took a few steps back, teetering in heels before coming to a stop at the porcelain sink. She perched her ass on the edge of basin, hands curling around the edge, cool to the touch. It was one of those dumb grounding exercises that actually helped. Name something you can touch, something you can see, something you can hear, blah blah blah. She'd done it over and over again, in and out of rehab. Right now it was working to keep the grimace off of her face as Amy's words hit her square in the chest. Whatever. She guessed she kind of deserved that one.
"I guess it doesn't." she said, pursing her lips. Because it didn't, really. It didn't matter how Maggie spelled it out, Amy clearly had no interest in rekindling whatever mutually orgasmic thing they had going on. It didn't matter whether or not Maggie had a boyfriend - or that her tolerance for men came and went with alarming rapidity - what mattered to Amy was that she'd been, well, kind of an asshole.
The beginning prickling of guilt sat heavy on her chest. She was good at hurting people's feelings, less so at owning up to her wrongdoings. Looking at Amy now, with her fluttering, fidgeting hands and her words echoing off the walls of the art-deco bathroom, Maggie was reminded of all the times she'd accidentally upset Sephy. Her face would turn downwards into a little half-pout, like she was trying not to let onto the fact Maggie had been a colossal bitch. Nothing hurt worse than upsetting Sephy, because Sephy was one of her oldest friends, and pretty much the kindest, sweetest person she'd ever met.
It didn't make much sense that seeing Amy uncomfortable would garner that same feeling she got when she made her best friend sad. There were few similarities between them. Except, well, the stirrings of attraction Maggie tried hard to push down when she saw both girls. And the fact that she kind of cared what they both thought of her.
Fuck, she like, cared about what Amy thought of her!
She drummed her fingers against the side of the sink, biting back a sigh as she frowned at the other girl.
"I don't date men." she stated, voice unwavering as she stared at Amy.
Ugh. She so hated grovelling.
"I'm sorry I was mean." she tried, fully aware of how icky and juvenile her words sounded. "And I'm sorry I didn't call. I can't remember if I said I would call, but. Anyway. It would have been like, courteous to call."
Tugging her bottom lip between her teeth, she gave the other girl a quick once over, trying to judge if her pathetic plea for forgiveness was working to loosen her up at all.
"This whole situation is lowkey super humiliating, so. I would really like if we could just call it even. And part ways as um, unlikely friends?" she rambled, feeling the skin stretch taut across her knuckles as her grip on the sink grew tighter. "That's if, you like, don't want to see me again?"
