For as long as you can remember, you’ve been close with Robin Buckley. I mean, she was your best friend. You did everything together.
Trips to the mall, visiting each other at work, movie nights every Friday, holding hands to keep balance while you taught her to skateboard; her fingers intertwined in yours for just a second too long, the electricity of her touch lingering on the ball of your hand.
But it was platonic, of course. Platonic. With a capital P.
Coincidentally, also as long as you can remember, you’ve never once had a crush on a guy.
And it’s not like you were, gay… or anything. You just hadn’t been going after the right men. Yeah, that was it. In your defense, Hawkins had a terrible selection of boys. You were honestly banking on finding your match in college, once you were out of this town.
You knew Robin was gay. She had opened up to you about her sexuality years ago when she admitted to the crush she had on a girl in the school marching band, Vickie Price.Â
You don’t remember exactly what happened with them, maybe because Robin never actually told you; you just know it fizzled out, and now they barely speak.
Mid-October. It was cold and rainy tonight, and you were getting ready for yet another date with a Hawkins High boy. You thought he was cute, so what could it hurt? Robin was in your room with you as you were getting ready, trying her hardest to be supportive and optimistic, even though she knew exactly how the night was going to end.
As you tried on dress after dress, she told you close to 20 times that you looked lovely in every single thing you tried on. She thought you were lovely; though she’d never tell you that.
“What do you think about this necklace, Rob?” you asked as you held it up just above the neckline of your dress, “Does it match the dress, or is it too much?”
“No! I think it sits perfectly for the way the neckline is shaped. Not that I'm looking! Well, I am now because you asked-” she awkwardly chuckled, eyes meeting the floor. “God sorry- yeah you should wear that one, for sure.”
Robin did this a lot. It seemed like she was always rambling, her words getting caught in her throat.Â
“Okay Rob,” you chuckled “Can you help me put it on?”
Her eyes met your gaze as you waited for her assistance.Â
“Ye-yeah of course.”
She rose from the velvet loveseat in the corner of your bedroom, and you placed the necklace in her hands. She fumbled with the clasp for a moment before she pulled her hands in front of your face and then back towards herself.
From this proximity, she could play connect-the-dots with the freckles peppered along your shoulders.
Robin smelled of vanilla and tea flowers. You watched in the soft light of your reflections as she placed the necklace gently on your collarbone. When she let go of the necklace, her hand didn’t leave your back until it traveled down your spine, stopping at the small of your back. The action made you flinch. With a hesitant smile, you turned and thanked her as you started to gather your things.
After you dropped Robin back at her house, you began towards the small local theater Hawkins had. This is where you’d be meeting Michael Ridgway, captain of the basketball team. When you arrived, Michael was already waiting in the lobby for you, tickets in hand.
“Hey beautiful. You ready?” he asked as he stuck his elbow in your direction, signaling for you to hook your arm through his. You two grabbed your seats in the theater that read “Dirty Dancing” in neon red lettering.
Halfway through the movie, the feeling of Michael’s hand on your thigh was becoming unbearable. When the movie finally ended, he offered to walk you to your car.Â
“C’mon babe, it's dark.” he observed, “Let me walk you out.” He said this almost condescendingly, as if I couldn't defend myself if I needed to.Â
It’s pouring outside when you arrive at your car. Before you even get the chance to take the keys out of your purse, Michael’s chapped lips were on yours. You tore away from him almost immediately, to which he looked insulted.Â
“What the fuck!” He yelled as an open hand hit the side of your car, about an inch from your face.
You gasped sharply “I’m sorry- I barely know you, and I’m not sure I like you that way!” You cried, exasperated.
“What are you a dyke or something?” His voice was hateful; the word “dyke” landed like a blow to your stomach.
“Whatever bitch. You’re ugly anyways.” He heaves himself away from your vehicle and storms off into the caligo.
You could count on one hand the number of times in your life that you’ve felt this desolate; and there was only one person you wanted to see.
Robin.
Within minutes you’re en route to Robin's house. Dismal tears staining your cheeks. When you arrive, you leave everything but yourself in the car, and make your way to the door.
Before you even get the opportunity to knock, Robin’s opening the door; a look of distress taints her blue-gray eyes.
“My God.. what happened?! You’re soaked!” She ushers you inside and grabs you a pair of pajama shorts and a soft cotton t-shirt.
“The date was disastrous, Rob.” you replied bleakly. “He kissed me and…and I rejected it, to which he called me a slur. I swore he was gonna hurt me, Robin.”
More sympathetic than shocked, Robin padded her way over to the couch and sat down next to you. She observed you for a moment, before deciding that she had nothing more to say and pulled you into her reassuring embrace. Her scent invaded your senses. You could feel the ends of her coarse hair tickling your forehead.
You don’t know how long you two stayed like that for, but you noticed you had sunken farther into her arms, and she had sunken farther into the sofa. When you finally lifted your head out of the crook of her neck, fearing you were getting her clothes wet from your sopping hair, Robin’s face was closer to yours than you remembered it being.
You could feel her spearmint breath on your nose; your eyes traveled up from her chin and met her gaze. You felt a sort of adrenaline, as neither of you were moving away.
“Robin…” you whispered, shakily.
And as quick as her name had rolled off your tongue, her soft lips were intertwined in yours. You didn’t stop her; you couldn’t. Your lips parted ever so slightly to deepen the kiss.
Robin pulled away breathlessly, looking suddenly uneasy. The silence that hung over you both was penetrable.
“I’m-I’m so sorr-”
Before she could even finish her tizzied apology, your hands were tangled into the sides of her short, dirty-blonde hair and you were kissing her again. This time, with need.
What you had been craving, wanting, missing your whole life; was right here. On your lips and in your hands. Robin tenderly grasped the side of your jaw, bringing you impossibly closer to her. She had been waiting all of high school for this; waiting patiently through all your failed dates, all your botched endeavors at loving a man who you both knew you couldn’t.
She waited, because she loved you. More than anything.
Your lips surrendered to each other once more.
“I love you. I’m in love with you” she whispered. She looked at you like, like her eyes were handcrafted solely to admire yours.
You can feel it in the silence. You are in love. True love.
