Rambling about the trio during wbk 218:

Sakura isn't overreacting at all imo.

Nirei got to see Suo one final time. It was devastating and left Nirei with both emotional and physical pain, but he got to at least see Suo. Most importantly, he caught a glimpse of Suo's pain behind the mask. That's why he's able to cry it out and come back the next day to defend Suo and ask the class to help find him.

And then there's Sakura.

Sakura didn't get to see Suo a final time. He was straight up ghosted. He had no opportunity to question his friend or confirm the pain Suo tried to keep hidden. Sakura got nothing at all. Not even a text back or a voicemail. All he knows is what Nirei told him.

Nirei got a fight he never could've won and Sakura got silence. Suo's methods of leaving the two of them hit both their weak spots. He beat up the insecure fighter and ghosted the boy who literally just learned how to open up. (Low-key sinister if you ask me, but Ik Suo didn't mean for it to go this horribly...)

Alsoooo, like imagine you're in a three person friend group and someone leaves but only says goodbye to your other friend and not you???? Yo I'd be on the news because whaaaaaat??

Sakura is probably thinking:

"Why didn't he answer my calls, but he answered Nirei's? Did he not like me as much as Nirei?"

"Did he think I wouldn't be understanding of his reason for leaving?"

"Did I do something to piss him off and make him not want to say goodbye to me?"

"Does he not trust me?"

"Was Suo faking it with me the whole time and I was too stupid to notice?"

I bring up this comparison not to debate "who has it worse" but to theorize why Sakura seems like he's taking Suo's absence "harder" than Nirei. I believe they're both hurting the same amount, but Nirei can put on a brave face because he has a reason to (he saw Suo's pain up close) whereas Sakura is only going off secondhand information.

Tldr: whole house mad and it's suo's fucking fault

I do think that there is something to be said about the fact that Suo in recent chapters is still shown with the eyepatch on, and no one else that we've seen in RC has one other than him. Add this with the fact that he wore a medical eye patch in the middle school flashback, and I honeslty think that there is something medically wrong with that eye.

If it was an RC thing (like a symbol) then more people would he wearing them. Or if it was to hide some sort of branding (like some people have thought), then we would see others with some sort of facial marking, or making attempts to cover said markings. Neither of those are the case though, so its likely something medical in nature.

(It can be medical and still go back to RC, dont get me wrong on that (cause let's be honest, it probably does track back to rc somehow) its just still a him specific thing though, no one else thus far)

This thought has been rattling around my brain since chapter 217 came out, I gave you a small break with the Tomodachi posting (there will be more of that, don't worry) but it's time for some tasty angsty thoughts

Okay, you guys remember this panel

Back then I said this panel felt like it would become important or relevant in the future.

These are our two current leaders, Umemiya, who we all know overcame a really traumatic event, and Sakura.

Now, Kanji and Tsubaki are strong and there they are portrayed as protectors, as compassionate, as fierce as unflinching.

From the moment Suo was introduced to us, we've grown used to seeing him in this constant position of protection, what he's protecting behind his back, straight, firm...

And this stays true in Bankoku-Gai

And that doesn't change, but it does tell you enough considering their philosophy. The thing is, I think Suo doesn't see what he told Nirei in himself, but rather, when Suo says this he thinks of the person in his memory that embodies that

His master, whoever they are. Suo does not consider himself to be as strong as he thinks Kanji and Tsubaki are, or Sakura and Umemiya for that matter, because I still think this panel was not about physical prowess, but rather Suo not finding himself strong enough when compared to someone like Umemiya as leaders, as people capable of shouldering the weight of leadership.

As a side note, when at Furin, Suo's shoulders stand straighter, secure, his jacket fits like it should. He's still shouldering a certain amount of responsibility, but it is a sensible amount of it for someone his age, or at least one he can manage. In Bankoku-Gai, his shoulders are smaller and sloped, like he's shouldering a weight that's bringing him down, a weight too big for him, his clothes are clearly drawn to show they're too big, likely a hand-me-down from his master or the previous officer (if they're not the same person), a burden too big for someone so young.

Suo is not aware of how much he's shouldering, or how not normal that is. And because the position he has is so demanding, and it is very obvious something has been wrong in the city for a while and it's getting worse, Suo might consider himself as if he's not strong enough to fix things, to keep things afloat... He fails to realise he's only 15, possibly because he was trained (read groomed) for this spot, because he was expected to protect them...

But it is so clear he carries a big burden with that "there are some things they're better off not knowing"

It is likely that Rakta and Bacchus can't even debate him on that because they have to uphold the hierarchy and can't override an officer, even if it was to help said officer out because he's a kid...

Favorite Book Series: Oh no. I have many. Since I was 10 I've collected and read Ranger's apprentice a lot (like every book atleast thrice). But the Empyrean series rly has my heart and I can't wait for next year for the fourth book. Also, the way you just know he's used to paying attention to everyone and helping everyone out, I mean, it's so clear here. He's hyper aware of other people's mental state and problems. He cares about everyone

But who takes care of you Suo? Because I have a feeling you also hide things from Rakta and Bacchus because it's your "responsibility" as an officer right?

I'D BEEN THINKING ABOUT THIS TOO!! like there's this what op has said and I agree and it makes me think.. what if the similarities between rc and furin being there (how endo stated plus 217) are just one part of the truth the rc presents in front of everyone? but there's more to it that they're hiding. And those are the differences between the two groups. Furin isn't responsible for the individual or collective growth of makochi and its people. Orphanages etc are present there like any other normal town would have and "adults" are responsible for them. Adults also care for furin's kids in turn in their own sensible ways. Bofurin is just responsible for the growth of their "peers" at school and physically protecting the city. But red chanpuru? They're literally responsible for the ENTIRE CITY, THEY'RE PRACTICALLY RUNNING THE CITY WHILE MAINTAINING PEACE AND ORDER (as far as we know for now). there's a clear difference in roles and responsibilities.

ntm everyone treat the kids in RC as "mature" people RESPONSIBLE for them, for the city. They're NOT treating them as kids (especially suo cuz he's one of the? officers in there. It makes me so so sad. He's just fifteen...) There's a clear difference in positions. Unlike bofurin who are taken care of and treated as kids, who are expected to behave and live as kids, no one expects the level of maturity and capabilities like an adult from them. Heck they give them advice and look after them (ume's orphanage owners and sugi's grandparents for example) because tho they know they're strong, sure, at the end of the day they're still KIDS. Which is. the opposite for RC where the people around have accepted them as individuals who aren't immature growing kids who can obviously make mistakes or have trouble navigating life. and BECAUSE they trust RC to be in charge of bankokugai, I believe the people there don't question anything.. it's natural and normal for them. It's been so for 80 years after all. unlike furin where people used to dislike and disagree with pre ume reformed furin. and that tells us something. if no one's questioning, no one will know what is actually going on with RC and if there's anything complicated or fishy in any of its layers.

we'll have to wait and see till we get more on rc (I have a lot else in my head too which I'll post later)

yes they're kind of similar to Bofurin and the Makochi bc they protect their citizens but the dynamic is very different????? The way the adults of Bankoku-gai rely on the Red Chanpuru differs so much from the way Bofurin may physically protect Makochi. Bofurin feels like a friendly group of neighbourhood boys who help out the elderly while still being treated as kids (referring to that one chapter in which the shop owners literally say the Bofurin boys are like sons to them) and they get treated to food and snacks and get patted on the back like you'd do to a boy who helped you carry groceries. Meanwhile the Red Chanpuru kids have to be mature and act as leaders, act as mediators and even take care of the younger children, something that, in Makochi, is being handled by adults.
