Always, always take the time to sit with and process your feelings. Often we live through events that are major for us and afterwards we just keep going - we do not stop to check our breathing, our heartbeat, our mental state. A lot of situations cause a lot of difficult emotions and while it is ok to let them exist for a while, it is not ok to bury them. Make room for your feelings and thoughts, my love. Remember to reflect on your experiences and make sure to evaluate how you feel about them. Reflection is the key to truly knowing yourself, to truly healing yourself.
Merfolk are obviously mammalian - the presence of breasts on mermaids and the horizontal tail fin are dead giveaways - but classifying them more precisely than that gets interesting.
They're fully aquatic, which rules out the various lineages of semi-aquatic mammals
Their high intelligence and complex social behavior (mermaids are clearly sapient) is similar to cetaceans
Their forelimbs still have distinct fingers rather than being fins - most similar to the flippers possessed by pinnipeds
So does them retaining some amount to body hair
Unlike pinnipeds, they do not possess external hindlimbs, and their tail flukes resemble those of cetaceans and sirenians
Their human-like faces display none of the characteristic skull adaptations associated with sirenians
None of those three groups have particularly long external arms
This points to merfolk being their own lineage of fully aquatic mammals. The flat face with forward-facing eyes, as well as the grasping hands with opposable thumbs and the fact that they did retain external forelimbs seems to point to them being primates, and we can go one step further and say that their facial structure is characteristic of simians - basically, merfolk are probably not lemurs. Them having tails also certainly rules out apes. New World monkeys have longer tails that evolved to be prehensile on multiple separate occasions, while Old World monkeys have shorter tails and never evolved to be prehensile, and I'm going off of intuition here but it seems to me that the tails of merfolk are more similar to the former than to the latter.
So, if I'm right, that would classify mermaids as a lineage of New World monkeys. Merfolk occupy a variety of ocean biomes but are very often seen in coral reefs, which also explains them retaining their arms and hands - I can see how those would be useful adaptations in a coral reef environment - so I would say they probably evolved in coral reefs. Most coral reefs in the Americas are located in the Caribbean, so that's the most likely place for proto-merfolk to have evolved
From there, merfolk could probably have spread down the South American coast, which still has some coral reefs, at which point some populations could have made their way up the Amazon River, while a smaller group could have crossed the Atlantic to West Africa and the coral reefs there. From there, merfolk could have spread around Africa's coasts (as well as up West Africa's various rivers), reached the Indian Ocean where they'd probably have been very successful, and then finally made it to Indonesia and then Polynesia where the abundance of coral reefs would have been great for merfolk.
This would probably mean that the Caribbean, and to a lesser degree coastal South America and the Amazon rainforest, would have the greatest genetic variety of merfolk, while Indonesia and Polynesia would have the most weird physical traits on merfolk
"How does one practice as a sea witch?": An open dialogue
Hello! Something I've been thinking about today is, what does it mean to be a sea witch? Namely, what does one's practice look like as a sea witch?
🐚 What tool(s), ingredient(s), and/or magical actions does a sea witch use in spells?
🐠 What deity(ies), if any, does a sea witch use in their practice?
🫧 Do their visualization(s) and meditations involve sounds of the ocean, music that invokes imagery of the sea, viewing pictures or videos of the ocean, holding seashells or other items collected from previous beach visits?
🐡 Do sea witches invoke just the powers of the sea in their craft, or any body(ies) of water?
💧 Does one look to just the ocean for one's power, or things related to the ocean like sea creatures, seaweed, etc.?
These are the questions that inspired this post! I'd love to hear from other sea witches what their practices look like. If you're a sea witch, feel free to share however much or however little of your sea witchcraft you'd like. 💙
To ease us into things, I'll start with my own craft:
🌊 Whenever I'm feeling decalibrated, or if I know a full moon is coming up, I go to the beach! I'm lucky to live close by, so I make the trip whenever I can. Nothing has made me feel more powerful as a with than dancing under the full moon light on the beach and hearing the waves crash fervently onto the shore.
🌊 I collect items from the beach whenever I can - mainly seashells, driftwood, and sand. I thank the ocean for whatever I collect, and I make sure to pick up any trash I see while I'm collecting as a way of giving back!
🌊 When gathering energy, I'll imagine I'm underwater sitting on the sea floor, and I have a small bubble in my hands. As I chant, I imagine the bubble growing bigger until there's enough energy inside it to envelope me inside it.
🌊 I invoke the power of the sea (and water in general) when casting spells.
🌊 I write runes or sigils on seashells.
🌊 I keep seashells and a vial of sand on my altar. The seashell is nice to hold during meditations.
🌊 I use sand in my cauldron when I'm burning incense or spell ingredients.
🌊 I have a mermaid-themed tarot deck! I connected with it right away & it has yet to steer me wrong in any reading.
🌊 I made a playlist on Spotify with songs that remind me of the water! Some songs contain bubbles, ocean waves, and sea life sound effects, which is so so so useful when I'm meditating.
I'm excited to hear from my fellow sea witches what they do in their practices! And I hope this post helps anyone tinkering with the idea of sea witchcraft! 😊
Could you give me some tips to get started?
This is gonna be a long ass post. My apologies. Anyone is more than welcome to add to this list.

Sea Witch Bath
Maybe you’re a landlocked sea witch, maybe you’re looking for a setting to commune with your ocean deity, maybe you just feel like pampering yourself like a mermaid. We’ve got the bath spell for you.
First prep the bath mixture. You’ll need:
1 part sea salt
1 part epsom salt
1 part kelp powder
½ part baking soda
essential oil of rosemary
Combine all the ingredients in a jar, then charge the mixture under the full moon. Store with a piece of moonstone when not in use.
For the spell you’ll need:
the sea witch bath mixture
muslin bag or old pantyhose
variety of candles
sea related trinkets (i.e. seashells, sea glass, mermaid offerings, etc.)
jasmine or eucalyptus incense
Arrange your trinkets and candles around the rim of the bathtub, then light the incense and candles. While waiting for the bathtub to fill with warm water, place a cup of the bath mixture into the muslin bag or pantyhose and tie it shut. Make sure theres enough room in the bag for when the kelp expands. Drop it into the bath water, then soak until you feel you’ve absorbed all the energy out of the bath.
Enjoy your soak, all you lovely sea witches~

“Just be YOU. People will understand and realize the GENUINENESS even after y’all have broken up. And not only do you hold yourself to a better standard, they do as well bc the energy you bring will only set the bar for the next. Like nah…I was with *your name* SHE DID THIS and SHE DID THAT… I ain’t settling. The gag is..once you come to understand what you thought was impossible to be possible…there is no “going back”. That’s why it’s important to be your genuine self, to do what you would do for someone and not care about looking dumb bc even if they do feel that way in the moment, trust and believe me…YOU HAVE SET THEIR BAR and I always set the MF BAR with ppl…bitch you gon know I’m THAT GIRL. I’m a dream girl!”
