The Classic of Mountains and Seas

In The Classic of Mountains and Seas, the totemism culture is a point that deeply attracts me. Thus, that’s where the inspiration comes from for this textile manipulation. Snake is the most famous totemism in animal totemism. It is said that many tribes believe in snakes as totemism. Other legends say that the snake is also a precursor to the totemism of dragon. According to the stories, I coloured the texture of the snakeskin and blurred it as the background in the textile work. Placed the silhouette of the snake on the surface. After that used the ropes with different colours and materials stitched in the shape of snakes’ silhouette, which made it energetic in different ways.

There is a Chinese saying called "lofty mountains and flowing water", which is exactly what I want to show in this outfit.The shirt used digital printing to print the blocky feeling of the mountain. The flash thread was interspersed in it, like the green hills under the sun. The blue circles below were like bubbles in the water, also looked like the breath of many creatures in the water. It shows vitality.

The hydra is a famous legend in the story of The Classic of Mountains and Seas. Obviously I will use it as inspiration to create textile work. The green printing part symbolises the dense jungle, while the hydra hides inside. The thick rope is hidden behind the fabric, and then stitched together to make bumps. The flash thread twined around the rope as if it was sticking out its tongue.

The inspiration for this work still comes from the imagination of the sea. Countless hollowed-out holes are like bubbles in the water, and the blue circles can be unknown ocean creatures or bigger bubbles. Whatever it is, the purpose is that give people free imagination. The middle part of the fracture is intentional. It may be coral colony on the bottom of the ocean, but you can always imagine what it is.

Since the cloud pattern of laser cutting has been used before, I think about the idea of continuing to use this method. Because it is cut very thin, and it has the effect of lace when they are overlapped. The use of different colours and irregular overlap create a confusing but attractive aesthetic. Look through the hollowed-out section and feel lost in it.

Making tears on denim is a constant fashion trend. Still use the shape of the mountain as the base. However, irregular covered on the surface, to achieve a kind of shadow with the hazy feeling. To extend the mystery of The  Classic of Mountains and Seas. That's what I want to bring to my target customers.

This textile design is inspired by the concept of mountains in The Classic of Mountains and Seas. Use different colours to create overlapping layers of mountain patterns. The combination of silk screen and pigments shows the uneven texture. Like the fine lines of the mountains, it creates the historical vicissitudes.

Using the simple vector patterns into the form of cloud sea, combined with the previous concept of metaphysics, it expresses the spectacular imagination of the ancestors, Chinese often describe it as a breakthrough in the sky. At the same time, applying the flash thread on the print is a symbol of the brilliance of imagination.

In this textile manipulation, the point is the exploration of Seas. The navy blue is a symbol of the bottomless sea, and the small things in the middle are like hidden mystery in the sea. The whole substrate is represent in digital print. Using the transparent sense of the organza and chiffon with the sense of balance between the two different fabrics, the rope can create a three-dimensional feeling between the fabrics, as the monster in the water. After that use the warm colours to show the strong contrast, and achieve the effect.

The Classic of Mountains and Seas has a lot of rich and interesting contents. It contains the experiences of ancient ancestors and the imagination of them. In this textile manipulation, the inspiration comes from the metaphysics of this book. It is a kind of ancient Chinese philosophy and culture thought. This pattern is meant to express the flow of thought. All of things belong to nature is the gist of The Classic of Mountains and Seas. Therefore, I chose some different green to represent it.

For my target customers, the age range is between 16 and 25. The characters are that they have plenty of imagination and creativity, and also like to keep trying new things and challenging themselves. They reject more than anything is conformity. Moreover, they are fond of traditional things which are recreated.

About this collection, the inspiration is from the ancient book about Chinese mythology and geographic records, is called The classic of mountains and seas. This historic text covers a wide range, such as ancient geography, mythology, witchery and folk customs and more. Therefore, Chinese culture will be  incorporated with shapes of traditional landscape and details of mythical creatures, and also use bold colours and mix textures, add oriental patterns. Combine with unconventional silhouettes and traditional craftsmanship with my own twist to create free-spirited, youthful and whimsical images for menswear.
