hey so it’s march now aka the beginning of endometriosis awareness month and i feel obligated to remind you that debilitatingly painful periods are not normal. if you or someone you know is ending up sick or bedridden every month, you are not crazy and deserve medical attention from someone who will take you seriously
hey it’s march again let’s get this post circulating again
it’s a fucking nightmare trying to advocate for yourself when it comes to endo, but you HAVE to. No one else will. The doctors won’t believe you, insurance won’t want to cover it, and no two people have symptoms that look the same. My tips:
1. learn to read research - find medical journals and studies that support your symptoms, and bring them to doctor appointments
2. Write down and research all of your symptoms, even the ones that seem unrelated - I found out that the “infections” that I had been getting symptoms of every month or two (UTIs, BV, yeast, etc) weren’t actually infections - they were false nerve signals caused by the endo growing into my pudendal nerve. Endo presents in a bazillion different ways that can affect MANY different body parts - not just your reproductive ones.
3. get a second, third, fourth, etc opinion - if your OB won’t listen to your research, find a new one.
4. If you can’t find an OB to give you a referral to a surgeon, think outside the box. I got my referral from a holistic PT who focuses on pelvic floor therapy.
5. Don’t be afraid of the surgery, and don’t second guess yourself. I was terrified that after the whole fight to get the surgery, they would find nothing. That isn’t what happened - they found endo, and my symptoms reduced dramatically.
6. Check out Nancy’s Nook for additional resources
I cannot believe it..
When you’re chronically ill or disabled, a short task also requires an allotted recovery time or flare time. I can vacuum my bedroom in 10 minutes with difficulty, but then I need 2 more hours to rest because I exerted myself. I might even need an entire day to recover from a more difficult task. So a 10-minute task now becomes 2+ hours, and an hour task becomes a day. So when I ask someone else to do a task I can technically physically handle, it’s because they can do it in minutes and I need hours.
