Repair is not a soft skill. It’s one of the hardest skills you’ll ever need. Conflict capacity & repair is among the hardest emotional development skills a person can learn. Navigating rupture without carceral punishment is key. And knowing how and when to pause to take a breath. Many of us were not modeled healthy conflict so we collapse because we don’t know how to stay in relationship when conflict shows up (due to unhealed relational wounds).
Repair, accountability, mutual care, and conflict capacity are not “soft” skills— They are foundational.
Everything is relationship. Institutions are relationships repeated at scale. Movements are relationships. Communities are relationships. Even you reading this right now online (para-social).
Patriarchy relegated care and relationship to the people it tried to subordinate— women, queers and marginalized people based on class, race etc.—then devalued those very capacities as “soft.’ We’re talkin labor that makes every other form of labor possible was dismissed as secondary. Yet nothing survives without it (care).
The future won’t be built by people who are only wealthy, strategists or aesthetically pleasing. It will be built by people who know how to repair, who know how to remain accountable and challenge the status quo.
