The Academy for Survival was a three-day retreat that put the ideas and methodologies of Borderlander’s Outfitter into practice. The mission of the Academy was to cultivate ways of thinking through the processes of making. Through demonstrations, hands-on material experimentation, and group dialogue, this program explored the ways humans engage with the world and with community, leveraging the kinesthetic knowledge obtained through the processes of craft and design to speculate on potential innovations in socioeconomic and biodynamic systems.

Borderlander's Outfitter Exhibition Soundtrack, created by Emily Gustafson
Borderlander’s Outfitter, an exhibition of work by Abigail Anne Newbold, on view at the Philip Feldman Gallery + Project Space, PNCA, (September 4 - October 24, 2014), is punctuated by a living score-turned-exhibition soundtrack composed by Detroit-based artist Emily Gustafson. Recorded between Michigan’s Huron National Forest, a suburban strip mall, Detroit’s Jam Handy historic sound and film stage, and Gustafson’s century-old attic, this soundscape interweaves the sounds of the Borderlander’s Outfitter toolkit with sonic souvenirs collected through the intentional hunting and circumstantial gathering of audio. Gustafson relates her creative process to composing a conceptual drawing, building the layers of a representational painting, and weaving memory of lived experiences.

Feldman Gallery Exhibition: Borderlander’s Outfitter by Abigail Anne Newbold. September 3 - October 24th, 2014. Borderlander’s Outfitter is an exhibition and backcountry instructional retreat that explore the skills required to live self-sufficiently through the use of traditional craft combined with modern material. Borderlander’s Outfitter cultivates designs for the self-sufficient life by speculating on a holistic model for individual survival irrespective of existing socio-economic systems. Part collector, part craftsman, part designer, Abigail Anne Newbold utilizes a domestic vocabulary to create objects and installations that examine issues of portability, survival and ultimately independence. Born in Boston, Newbold’s practice combines backcountry leadership skills and studies in cultural anthropology, with product design, fiber and material studies. She received a BFA from Massachusetts College of Art where she studied both Industrial Design and Fiber, and an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art.
