I’m 24 years old and I have HSV-1. It’s now been a month since my first & only break out (so far) and here’s some advice for what’s helped me mentally.
1. This video I watched of Ella Dawson. She is awesome and made me feel more human and educated towards HSV. I even sent it to family & friends I have chosen to tell to help me explain how common it really is. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=YcIl-hclrLI
2. Talk to people about it! I told my best friend about a week after my confirmed diagnosis and her response? “Don’t even stress girl, I have HPV.”
3. Don’t over think it. You are not ruined. You are not disgusting. You are not any of these things that the worlds stigma around STI’s make us believe.
4. Remember, YOU hold the power. You are the only one who decides who in your life knows and who doesn’t. (Excluding any sexual partners, it’s important to tell them.)
5. It’s okay to grieve. I still do too.
