"that time of the month" "monthly visitor" "feminine hygiene products" GRRAH!!! SHUT UP SHUT UP!!! PERIOD!! MENSTRUATION!!!! TAMPONS!!! PADS!! MENOPAUSE!!!!!!!!!!!
another festival in the books! this year was wild but the music at my stage was great! here are the standouts:
day 1 -
penelope road
kinda funk, kinda pop, little bit soul. cute little 5 piece band
my pick (no setlist*): chance encounter
the paradox
pop punk/emo. pour one out for their main guitar player, he took a crazy fall off the stage and fucked up his ribs bad. got up and played another 45 minutes though, what an absolute mad man.
my pick (no setlist): leave my room
børns
pop. crazy full circle for my middle school self, remembered some of the songs but damn its been like a decade since i've listened to this music.
my pick (no setlist): american money
day 2 -
alicia creti
soul/pop. what an INSANE voice AND she's better live too. holy shit.
my pick (no setlist): guilt trip
the warning
hard rock. trio of sisters from mexico that fucking ROCK. what a performance. the drummer had a head mic, so awesome. and their GUITARS UGH
my pick (from setlist): qué más quieres
arrested development
hip hop. they got everyone so hype so fast it was incredible. 0 to 100 instantly.
my pick (no setlist): revolution
day 3 -
paco versailles
dance pop. guy on the guitar killing that shit with the flamenco influence.
my pick (no setlist): heaven on my mind
the california honeydrops
blues/rnb. group from oakland, FULL HORN SECTION.
my pick (no setlist): when it was wrong
cut copy
electronic/dance. i was so tired after three 12 hour shifts but they still got me to boogie down lmao.
my pick (no setlist): lights & music
*same deal as last year, i'm way too busy to focus on the names of songs so i'm either picking from the setlist if its online or picking a song i remember the artist playing
i see a laufey jukebox musical in our future. she's sooooooo theatrical. bump the tempo a bit and this is the act 2 ballad. and time as the concept/theme?!?!? she's operating on a completely different plane than all these other bitches i'm not sorry to say.
fav lyric: a journey i'll one day dread
added to: lvl 2, jane <3
i'll change for you - mitski
gut wrenching lyrics over smooth jazzy instrumentals? is it the 70s again thank god
fav lyric: they say they're closing / so i'm loitering outside / like a kid waiting for my ride
added to: lvl 2
ready, steady, go! - harry styles
i like the album. it's just too empty-sounding to me. this song isn't though, so it gets the top spot.
i cannot stop playing this ep. if you listen to a single thing i recommend, make it this one. the switch up from minor verse to major chorus and then the last chorus being so gritty i eat that shit UP.
fav lyric: it's not paranoia, i know how it feels / when i'm losing the fight
concrete - haley blais
such simple lyrics that evoke so much feeling. i really connect with her songwriting. i love how there's at least 4 different stringed instruments going at a time. the HARP!!!!
fav lyric: never too sure if my words are sincere / or just acting in place of the ones that i fear
talk - hozier
this is the sexiest hottest song ever. review over.
fav lyric: i'd be the dreadful need in the devotee that made him turn around / and i'd be the immediate forgiveness in eurydice
guys indie pop is just sooooo good. this almost could be a clairo song but it's even funkier than her old stuff. summer is coming!!!!
fav lyric: might take a shot at being a real shock jocker
added to: lvl 3, 2481, lily )))
truth of pursuit - sarah kinsley
her vision!!! she has such a sense of her own vocal and musical style and i'm obsessed. so floaty and ethereal with this 80s instrumental what a perfect combo.
fav lyric: but i want the flood of you back in my veins
added to: lvl 3, 2481, jane <3
dolphin - paperkitty
this song makes me want to jump around for hours. could also be the dti lobby bgm. 10/10.
new series!!!! apple music makes a playlist of new music from both your artists and what the algo thinks you'll like every friday, a la discover weekly but it's all new releases. i've been listening every week and they usually have some bangers from underground artists in there! gonna start posting about them, maybe i'll actually stick to weekly on this one, we shall see. hoping to continue the discover weekly series soon, just need to figure out logistics.
bruised sky - poppy
my GIRL. she is incredible. another fucking banger from ms. banger who could have guessed. she does nu metal like she was born for it.
fav lyric: the only way to cope / is to see you as disease
added to: lvl 5
what's my line again? - dogpark
this one immediately stood out to me and i proceeded to play it like 16 times. this sound reminds me of early maroon 5 mixed with some good old thom yorke vocals. fucking LOVE.
fav lyric: forget about the grain of salt
added to: lvl 3, jane <3, 2481
crash - bay faction
mmm this one has a little midwest emo kick to it....
i've been watching brett and eddy (extremely australian names btw) since middle school. yes i was a band kid. these pieces are so beautiful and full of energy and emotion. i've been playing the whole ep on loop while i read. neeeeeed more original compositions from them.
fav section: 2:52-3:43
operator - girl scout
wait.... is it time to get back into riotgrrl..... is 2021 back???? 5 year cycle....
fav lyric: can you hear me now? / can you tell that was a lie?
telephone busy - 5 seconds of summer
this album..... :/ this song fucks though!!!! ash always had my favs back in the day. out of the whole thing, this one really stands out as the most complete in terms of sound, lyrics, and production. no hate to the boys though
fav lyrics: already messed it up so i don't hesitate, okay!
album spotlight: metamorphosis complete - infinity song
release date: 6/14/24
my thoughts: such a cool sound. clean harmonies my favorite!!! this album had me in a chokehold all of summer '24. cannot wait to see what they have cooking.
top 3 tracks:
1 - lotus
fav lyric: the ignorance is bliss, just let me fall for it
2 - sinking boat
fav lyric: see it in the stars, our conclusion has been foretold
3 - metamorphosis
fav lyric: never planned to be so nonchalant
honorary mentions: i want you back, slow burn, hater's anthem
my thoughts: her best work with close to no competition (home video i love you). packs a PUNCH. composition is incredible, theme is super clear and well executed, her vocals are sooooo good. lucy WHAT HAPPENED???? money is the root of all evil. i wish this sound had more influence on the boygenius record. the rock tracks were missing this grit.
top 3 tracks:
1 - pillar of truth
fav lyric: oh, i tried to be a second coming / and if i was, nobody knew
2 - yours & mine
fav lyric: marching away and you've got nothing to say
3 - timefighter
fav lyric: you talk like you don't know the walls are thin
honorary mentions: night shift (duh), body to flame, historians
obsessed with this fucking song. and what if i said this was ilya rosanov's anthem. so what.
fav lyric: would it be easy to love me if i was different / but meant the same to you like a synonym?
glistening - flipturn
i'm gonna see them this summer when they come to the music festival i work for!!! very excited, will be doing a deep dive of their discography in preparation. haven't heard a song i haven't liked from them yet.
fav lyric: i've been trying to act on your social cues / but you know i need someone to tell me what to do
all in - the army, the navy
this is the first song they ever released to streaming and is the only song of theirs i hadn't listened to 800 times yet. i have no idea why because OH MY GOD what a debut. are you kidding??? tone and style of ALL of their music so far immediately clear and perfect in the FIRST SONG. even the god damn cover image. i will forever be their biggest fans maia and sasha ilysm. also shane hollander's anthem thank you very much goodnight.
