the no bullshit guide to getting your shit together: for the lazy student
Let’s be honest: time management and organization? They’re really hard. Sure, at first you might feel like you’ve gotten the hang of them, that you’re in control of your life. But how often have you fallen off the wagon? Procrastinated on one thing and the next moment, you’re behind in all your classes? I know that sometimes laziness feels like a part of who you are, but honestly, fuck that. Do you really want to give up your success for the disinterest of a moment?
If your answer is no (it better be no, or you really need to get your priorities straight), let’s get to it.
STEP ONE: BE HONEST WITH YOURSELF
“This class doesn’t even matter.” “I don’t care about my grades.” “I can finish this the day before.” Sound familiar? You might feel great now, but when you’re staring down at your report card later, it’ll feel like you just got punched.
This is a cliche, but the greatest obstacle to your success is yourself - especially the lies you tell yourself! Sit yourself down and be honest about what you need to improve on. Be as blunt as you can, but for god’s sake, don’t throw yourself a pity party! There’s no use agonizing over what you can’t change. Instead, set realistic, achievable goals, and make a game plan. Struggling with math? Go to extra help. Behind in all your classes? Stay in for a couple nights and actually work.
STEP TWO: STOP WITH THE FANCY SHIT
Now you know what your goals are, but maybe you want some inspiration, so you log on to tumblr and are instantly bombarded by all these beautiful, well lit shots of the most gorgeous bullet journals, planners, and notes. Impressive, right? Well, I’m gonna let you in on a little secret: they’re all useless! A simple phone planner works just as well, if not better, than a fancy agenda, because you’ll always have it on you, it’s not a hassle to carry around, and you don’t feel obligated to make it look pretty.
Riddle me this, where are you going to find all this extra motivation to keep prettying up your bullet journal? To write all your notes in perfect, colour coded printing? There aren’t many times in life where taking the easy was out will actually benefit you, so take advantage! Stop wasting your time; get a phone planner and write your notes in your natural goddamn handwriting.
STEP THREE: CLEAN YOUR ROOM
Yep, your entire room - not just your study space! This one can be put on the back burner for a bit if you’re on a really pressing deadline, but I wouldn’t recommend it. I’m notoriously messy, and if I don’t watch myself, I’d find myself in dirty-laundry-and-old-notes hell. A little bit of organized chaos is fine, I even encourage it! But try working when your desk is covered in mounds of paper and you have nowhere to put your laptop – it’s just not conducive to success.
Keeping your entire room clean is a way to stave off stress, frustration, and even embarrassment, because nobody wants to show potential roommates how much of a mess they are.
STEP FOUR: ACTUALLY WORK
Yeah, I know what you’re thinking: “actually work? Who does this girl think she is?” I’d probably think the same thing, except I’ve learned the valuable lesson of sucking it the hell up, and you will too. When you get home from work, grab a snack and work. When you have a free period, figure out what’s due and work. Stop reasoning yourself out of work: you’re not going to finish this later, and that will be on the test. There’s really not much to say about this one, because it’s the step that requires the most raw effort, and you’re really only going to find that within yourself. Tell yourself what’s at stake, and realize that, by setting the standard for your mediocrity now, you’re potentially trapping yourself in a cycle that will last for years.
STEP FIVE: CUT YOURSELF SOME SLACK
Maybe you’ve been on top of your shit for a day, a week, or even a month, and that’s really great. But then… you fail. You miss a deadline or you bomb a test. So what do you do now? Do you allow yourself to fall back into your old habits? Fuck no! Everyone fails, even that studyblr with those perfect bullet journal photos and a perpetually clean study space. I’m going to tell you something that’ll sound really strange: you should value your failures, especially if you worked hard to avoid them. What?! Be HAPPY about failing when I actually TRIED? Yeah, you heard me right. If you don’t know how to handle failure, then when you inevitably experience it, your reaction will be much worse.
Failing hurts, and boy, I know how embarrassing it can be. But learning how to deal with failure, and especially how to keep trying after it happens, is an invaluable lesson.
STEP SIX: TREAT. YO. SELF.
Disclaimer: I’m not suggesting you treat yourself after the most basic of tasks, because please. Treat yourself when you know you goddamn well deserve it. Remember that “all work and no play makes jack a dull boy.” If all you do is study and do your homework, then, pardon my french, your life sucks. If you don’t have friends, play a video game! Eat an entire jumbo chocolate bar! Indulge in whatever the fuck you want, you deserve it. I’m someone that has trouble prioritizing future benefits over immediate gratification, so by allowing myself little pleasures, I save myself from crashing and burning.
Hope these tips helped, but remember to take them with a grain of salt - you’re you and I’m me, and different things work for different people. Good luck!
GYST Day (Update 4/7/18)
A guide inspired by YouTuber Kalyn Nicholson on getting your shit together (or at least feeling like it). It’s broken up into a few categories: cleaning, planning, food and self care.
Cleaning
The first part of GYSTing (at least for me) is cleaning. I like to start off with cleaning because cleaning alone can make a huge dent in feeling like you’ve got life together (more or less) because when your spaces become less cluttered and organised so does your mind. Here’s what I do:
I like to start by cleaning up my spaces. Since I live at home, I’ll deep clean my bedroom and any other area in the house that I’m typically located on a regular basis.
Next, I’ll take some time to organise my closet, bags, desk etc.
Change my bedding- ideally, you should change it every week but I don’t do the household shopping so I change my sheets once a month and wash my pillow cases every week.
On the subject of laundry, I’ll sort the clothes and wash and dry them. Along with that, I’ll hand wash any delicate clothes and hang them up using the shower rail in the bathroom.
Planning
After cleaning (sometimes before) is when I do some planning. I’ll gather my pretty pens, planners, bullet journals, calendars, and whatever else I need to organise any upcoming events before I sit down and get started.
I normally start off with my calender’s, bullet journal, and planner. I fill out whichever one (or all three) with any upcoming events or events that passed but weren’t written down.
Next, I’ll make a to-do list of task I need to and want to complete during the upcoming week/month
I’ll also try to review any goals I have and edit them if necessary to see how close I am to reaching my goals and what steps I need to take to reach them.
Manage my expenses. I don’t have a lot of expenses but if I have any receipts sitting around I’ll go through them and add what I purchased to my expense tracker in my bullet journal. Not only does it help me assess where my money is going, but when I need to buy something again I can go through my expense tracker and get an idea of how much money I’ll be spending.
Food
In my house, my mum and I try to create a menu for dinner for the following month. It can be a lot of work, varying from a few hours to a few days to create but it simplifies life. It eliminates the question of ‘what’s for dinner?’ and it makes grocery shopping WAY easier. Just pull up the recipe, write down the ingredients and you’re good to go.
I also like to create a menu for the upcoming week so I know what I’m eating for breakfast, lunch, and snacks.
Next, I’ll take inventory of canned goods, fruits, vegetables etc and then write my grocery list for that upcoming week.
Also what I’ve been pretty into recently is meal prepping. When I go grocery shopping I’ll buy some snacks and fresh fruits/vegetables and on Sunday’s I’ll take about an hour or so to portion them out and prep them so I can just grab one and go when I’m ready.
Self Care
Last but not least, I try to finish up my GYST day with some self care… think of it as a watered down version of a spa day. Once the above tasks are finished I try to catch up on any self care rituals I’ve been wanting to do but haven’t found the time for. It can include but isn’t limited to:
Exfoliating my body, lips and face
Shaving
Whitening my teeth (I use one from the dollar store and it does a pretty good job)
Give myself a mani/pedi
Apply a face mask
Soak in the tub
Colour/paint
Relax

Drying herbs ❁ ⚘
I just wanted to write down my process of drying, storing, and energizing the herbs I harvest. (I help out but my mom does most of the gardening herself so I don’t think I have enough experience to talk about that part.)
There are several ways to dry fresh herbs, but I’m only gonna talk about the 2 methods I’m most familiar with.
Natural drying ⚘
Plants with high moisture content, like basil, may grow mold before they dry out completely, so people usually opt for a method that dries more quickly; this one takes a few weeks.
⚘ Collect the herbs. If you google it, you’ll find each plant has a particular spot that’s best for you to cut it, but, as long as you don’t take more than 1/4 of them (and that’s a rule to live by), the plant should have no trouble continuing to grow afterwards.
⚘ Make sure they’re clean. You might want to wash them in cold water and gently dry them with paper towels.
⚘ With a string, tie a few stems or branches together. The less you use for each bunch, the more aerated they will be, making them less susceptible to molding. If you’re using something other than a string (say, tape), be sure to only wrap it around a part of the herb you’re not going to use, cause it might damage that.
⚘ Hang them upside down (otherwise they’ll fall and lose their shape) somewhere as aerated as possible, away from sunlight, and wait. It can take anywhere between a week and a month, from my experience. You’ll know it’s ready when it becomes crisp; when it’s almost dry, if it looks a little too fragile, you might want to wrap a bag around it so that you don’t lose leaves or flowers that may fall out.
Microwave drying ⚘
Some witches aren’t comfortable using modern appliances for magical purposes, but I don’t mind it. I don’t like using the oven (purely because my oven sucks) which is probably the most popular method of fast drying, so I adapted. In theory, it might seem like herbs will lose some of their properties when you fast dry them, but when you start doing it you realize that sometimes it’s the best way to preserve them, like when the process of natural drying would leave them exposed to light and humidity for too long.
⚘ Don’t use branches; gather leaves and very soft stems only. Spread them over a paper towel evenly and microwave until they become crisp. Sometimes there’s barely any changes in aspect, aside from that. It takes about 1-2 minutes, but I recommend stopping every 20 seconds or so to move them around a bit and make sure everything’s going well, since microwaves are a little unpredictable. If your microwave starts making a popping noise, pause, open it, and let the heat dissipate a little before continuing. (Be careful not to burn yourself!)
Storing ⚘
Fresh herbs: For me, fresh herbs don’t last more than a day before they start shrinking and losing their vivacity – maybe a couple of days, if I push it. To prolong that time, you can store them in the fridge (wrapped by a newspaper page or a thick paper towel), but it still won’t last more than a week. You can also wash them in cold water, spread them over a baking tray, cover it with paper towels and freeze them; I’m not sure how long they last that way cause I’ve only done it like, twice, but I’m guessing more than a few weeks.
Dry herbs: Once it’s dry, you have to store it in a sealed container, away from sunlight. It’s generally advised that you use opaque containers (like porcelain or amber glass) and store it inside a cabinet or a closet; the less sunlight it gets, the longer it’ll last, and the less likely it is for them to lose their color or scent. You can pick the stems, leaves and flowers and store them whole, being careful not to squish them too much if the container is small, or you can use a mortar and pestle to grind them for easier storage.
Energizing ⚘
You don’t really have to energize herbs, but I like to think it helps channeling them towards your intent. Specially with dry herbs cause they’re usually harvested without any inherent in mind, since they’re to be stored for future purposes.
⚘ For fresh herbs, be mindful of your intent as you collect them, energizing each branch you cut as you do it, selecting them based on what you’ll use them for.
⚘ For dry herbs, stop for a minute while you hold them in your hands, close your eyes and visualize you’re transferring your energy into it, focusing on your intent. You might want to say a few words to manifest it, or imagine a beam of light coming from your hand and being absorbed by the herbs.
Herbs have many uses, fresh or dry. Like making incenses, tea, essential oils, balms, and several different kinds of amulets. I wanna get into some of my favorites on my next posts :)
