A beautiful and powerful story for 5+ to challenge the way we view one of our most infamous birds, and ourselves.
Its been far too long since I last Blogged
So here is my past six months in pictures. We left our beautiful house and friends in NSW, Australia because it was time to be with family. Here, back to England, land of my youth, it is all a bit strange, like waking from a coma or being a ghost in my own life. We both had parents die suddenly whilst we were overseas and being back makes us grieve all over again. I think it is the memories attached to familiar sounds or light levels or scents. For instance, the moment you alight from a plane at Heathrow you smell mushrooms. England does smell damp, even in a heat wave. What am I missing? My work on show at State Library of NSW, the launch of one of my enormous illustrated maps, my friends and book industry network of course. In between catching up with old acquaintances, joining SCBWI UK , despairing over this country's politicians and tackling an allotment I've been out with my sketchbook, falling in love all over again with the quirkiness of England. Fear not, I am still making picture books and have three publications out this June. In my small yet bijou Cambridge studio I am drawing the roughs for another non-fiction for Walker Books. Funnily enough, kayaking along our river Cam, under its dense over-reaching willow branches is not unlike the Daintree Rain Forest. Making the tallest tree in the rainforest fit into the landscape spreads of a picture book is my newest best challenge. You wait, we will make it work.
Oh .. I think the links broke... sorry

Scouts get new shirt
Newcastle Scouts will never be lost again - not with the Newcastle Illustrated Map on their new shirts! I was delighted to be asked to donate my map design.Â
Covid meant they have missed out on going to the Australian jamboree this coming January and a lot of big camps this year where they would normally walk away with a couple of cool shirts. District Leader, Anne said she wanted to give them something a bit âscoutyâ that showed Newcastle a little, but something kind of cool they would would still wear out in public and not just at a Scout event.
Thinking about the wonderful creativity in childrenâs artwork. Lockdown has interfered big-time in my picture book research. So trying to be resourceful without travelling anywhere but in my head. Youâll see and hear some of the ways I have been re-imagining ibis birds strutting around Sydney from my Newcastle studio. It goes on for a little while ... if you've got the time! :)  Thanks to all my kid lit friends who help me out.
My start to Book Week 2021 could not be better! So very happy to receive the CBCA Eve Pownall Award with Pamela Freeman for âDry to Dry-the seasons of Kakaduâ
And lovely to be connecting with thousands of students through the State Library NSW from my Newcastle Studio
Check out this quick video of how I made the Cover Artwork for  CBCA Shortlisted âDry to Dryâ, currently on show at Lovett Gallery, Newcastle Library
So excited to see BOTH Dry to Dry and The Biscuit Maker on the #cbca Notables list. Liz is taking bookings for School Author Visits and always happy to share my secrets on how I make my books
I am delighted to say âThe Biscuit Makerâ celebrates its publication day! Written by Sue Lawson and published by Walker Books this is a timely story about community and neighbourliness. Here is my friendâs Burmese cat who posed for me many times and didn't mind being given brown instead of grey fur in the illustrations. Its always good when baking biscuits is part of your research. I also spent much time drawing in my own and nearby streets, recording patterns of fences, hedges and gates. Illustrators love to sneak in extra visual narratives to help the flow and keep you entertained on each page. What else can you spot going on on these spreads? Perhaps you can work out which children are best friends. If you turn to the end papers you will see I show you where each family loves in the street
