Calyx has been at Camp Half-Blood since she was about seven years old. She's one of the senior campers of Camp Half-Blood, but sheâd left camp for a while when she was twelve.
What made her slightly different from others was, she was an almost-godâdaughter of Aphrodite and Persephone.Â
This evidently meant she was irresistible and invincible. Being a child of Aphrodite meant people naturally felt drawn to her, and she could literally just charm anyone into whatever she wanted them to. She knows when someoneâs lying, crushing, or longing, and has the ability to influence emotions subtly, even sense feelings like tension, desire, and jealousy. As a child of Persephone, it had a lot more impact. Her mood would affect the environmentâanger would result in frost, grief would result in decay, and calm would result in bloom. She could manipulate specific plants, and influence temperature shifts with her mood. As a daughter of the Queen of the Underworld, she had a natural command over others, that even monsters hesitate before attackingâand this also meant she was almost impossible to kill. This kind of⌠scared off some suitors and some people in general. Not because they were afraid of herâthey were afraid they wouldnât be able to handle it if she got âout of controlâ.
An almost-god was the next dangerous thing after a forbidden child. Theyâre the demigods that are claimed by two gods, then blessed to mortals. Theyâre called almost-gods because of the mortality that they still possess, but an almost-god because of the possession of powerful abilities of both godly parents. This made them a lot closer to the gods. Considered one of the rarest and dangerous beings, monstersâeven the gods themselvesâwill take a shot at them just as much as they would with a forbidden child.
Just like a forbidden child, monsters were always at her tail whenever she stepped out of camp. This complicated her quests, but the monsters were never that much of a problem to keep her from completing them.Â
Her godly parents, Aphrodite and Persephoneâthey were around much often. Aphrodite couldnât really care less if she were on the brink of death, unless a handsome suitor was involved. Persephone, on the other hand, made sure to guide her just enough to get her through, even in the smallest waysââcause Calyx was her only child. A cabin was eventually built for Persephone, due to the Aphrodite cabin being a little overcrowded for Calyx to bunk in.Â
She was adored, feared, whispered about, and pitied for all at the same time. Juggling cabin duties with almost-god duties wasnât easy, of course. She was the Co-Head Counselor of the Aphrodite cabin and Head Counselor for the Persephone cabin which she all had to herself. Her mothers are oftenâno, always finding ways to get her involved in some kind of business that involves trouble just to show her off.
This has happened multiple timesâsetting her up with suitors, especially with kids from the Apollo cabin or the Ares cabin, even with mortals as long as they were a person of wealthâand this happens once again when she meets Percy Jackson, and he meets her.
Sheâs just come back to camp after almost three years. Because of her âmortal affairsâ, some things have kept her from returning. Sheâs missed out on a lotâand by a lot, I mean a lot.Â
ââââââââ đ˘đ¸ ËË ŕźťââżâŕźş ËË đ¸đ˘ ââââââââ
Calyx returned to Camp Half-Blood on a morning that shouldâve been⌠the least to say, peaceful.
The strawberry fields were in bloomâtoo much so. Vines are creeping where they shouldnât be, flowers are growing from the soil and from the barren grounds.Â
And this is how the campers knew. She was finally backâthe one and only, Calyx ThĂŠrèse.
By the time sheâs crossed the boundary, campers had already stopped pretending not to stare or gape. Whispers followed her downhillâ âSheâs back,â âPersephoneâs daughter,â âGods, has it really been that long?â âIsnât she Aphroditeâs?â
â...Both of them.â
She looked olderâher jet-black, white-streaked hair was now longer, the soft edges of childhood transformed into something calmer and far more dangerous. Her piercing green eyes, so full of emotions and death at the same time, made anyone stare into them admiringly. Her presence alone made it as if the air was still. A few Aphrodite kids straightened unconsciously and the Ares campers had gone still, their hands hovering near weapons they didnât mean to reach for. Even satyrs hesitated, and the wood nymphs in the woods had gone quiet.Â
But Calyx didnât slow. She hadnât been gone long enough to forget what camp was like, but long enough for everything to feel⌠wrong. New cabins lined the edge of the grounds, and power hummed in places that were empty. Her cabin, the Persephone cabin, had been made Cabin 21 after she hadnât been present in so long. She felt a little⌠disrespected. But she thought, if this is for the best, then I guess itâs fine. The least they could do for her cabin was to make it less dusty and clean, to which theyâve thankfully done.Â
And then, there was this boy. Percy Jackson.Â
He was older nowânot that Calyx would know. Heâs grown at least a foot or two ever since heâd joined. Heâs lean and athletic rather than bulky, with a swimmerâs build without making it obvious at first glance. His thick, sandy blonde hair was tousled and slightly unruly as usual. But she sensed him before she could even see him properlyâthe untamed sea, the sea-salt power, the storm-bright defiance. A forbidden child, sheâd thought immediately. That explains the tension.Â
Meanwhile, Percy was trying not to stare, but he was staring anyway. Like the ocean pulling at the moon, something about her presence tugged at him. Instinctive, almost unwelcome. Heâd seen powerful demigods before, yes. But he knew that thisâsheâwasnât that. This felt older.
He stood near the climbing wall, arms crossed, and Riptide resting against his shoulder like it weighed nothing. She passes by, and the lava on the wall sputters. A vine curled up nearby, blooming flowers almost immediately before withering into ash. Percy blinked.
âOkay,â he muttered. âThatâs⌠new.â
His best friend, Annabeth Chase, was already at his side. Her eyes follow Calyxâs figure, a flicker of recognition and admiration in her dark brown eyes. âThatâs Calyx,â she said quietly. âShe left before you got here.â
Percy asks, without taking his eyes off Calyxâs figure. âSeriously? That long? Who is she?â
Annabeth pauses. âThat depends on who you ask.â
At the porch of the Big House nearby, Chiron was watching with Dionysus looking annoyed, which probably meant something important was about to happen. Calyx stops just a few feet from where Percy and Annabeth were standing, the ground beneath her combat boots softening, the grass blooming with all flowers, then steadies as she exhales.
She turns around, her eyes landing on Annabeth before shifting on Percy. Their eyes metâthe subtle, raging sea, and the eye of the storm.
For a second, their surroundings seemed to still further.
Percy felt it too. His heart suddenly hammers in his chest, like he was standing face to face with a sea monster that might pull him in a whirlpool. A really pretty one, though. But he wasnât charmed, nor was he afraid. He was just⌠aware. He knew she was someone he definitely shouldnât mess with. Annabeth just looked between them, knowing her best friend was probably going to say something stupid.
Calyx tilts her head, studying Percy calmly. She wasnât trying to flirt with him, but she wasnât trying to scare him either. She was simply recognizing him.
âSo,â she said, her voice smooth like honey, and a little soft like she was trying to get him to calm down. âYouâre the one who changed almost everything while I was gone.â
Percy swallowed, unsure. âUh. Hi?â Annabeth pinches the bridge of her nose.
Thankfully, Annabeth interrupts. She clears her throat, shooting Percy a sharp look briefly before turning to Calyx with a faint smile.Â
âItâs nice to see you again, Calyx. Three years has been⌠too long.â She pauses, then says, âThis is Percy. Percy, Calyx.â Her tone was light, maintaining her politeness, and lowkey hoping Percy wasnât going to say anything stupid even though she knew itâd probably happen anytime soon.
Calyx raises her brows slightly, looking slightly amusedânot because of the fact she already knows he's Poseidon's son, but because of the whirlwind of emotions Percyâs currently in. She gives him a small smile with dimples. âPleased to meet you, son of Poseidon.â
The pounding of his heart calms slightly. The first thing he notices is the dimples, then the distinct British accent in her speech before he answers. âIâm⌠Percy. Jackson. But you already knew that.âÂ
He winces slightly, as if heâd immediately regretted what he said. But her smile just widens, the dimples on either side of her cheeks deepening, simply amused. âI do, apparently. Itâs⌠nice to finally meet you in the flesh.â
Percy didnât know how or what to answer. Usually, heâd crack a joke or sarcastically reply to keep the conversation goingâbut right now, heâs slightly intimidated and unsure on what to say next. Heâs just standing there. Awkwardly. In the presence of someone new and unfamiliar.
