BTS Explain Concepts Behind âLove Yourself: Herâ Album: 'This Is the Beginning of Our Chapter Twoâ
Mere hours before the release of BTS'Love Yourself: Her, the albumâs significance wasnât lost on the groupâs leader, Rap Monster.
âItâs really a huge, big step for us,â the 23-year-old rapper/songwriter/producer told Billboard during a phone call from Seoul. âOf course, every member is so excited about the album. Weâve been just practicing until now, day and night, to show these new songs and perfected performances. I left a message on our fan cafe, the other day, after we finished that 'this EP will mark the turning point of BTSâ and even though the wait felt really long with this album â I think it was the huge event, the BBMAs, were in May â so much has happened.â
The wait has been particularly anticipated for for the bandâs famously passionate fan base, known as Army, who have been waiting for new tracks from Rap Monster, Jimin, Suga, J-Hope, Jin, V and Jungkook band after voting them Top Social Artist at the 2017 Billboard Music Awards over fellow pop juggernauts Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Selena Gomez and Shawn Mendes.
Since then, the BTS guys have landed distribution deals with Amazon and U.S.-based The Orchard (âWe believe the physical album, still, really counts and itâs really important to connect with our fans around the world,â Rap Monster said) and hung out with worldwide chart-toppers like Major Lazer, Halsey, Charli XCX(âMaybe itâs just my sixth sense, but I think maybe we will be collaborating with even more interesting artists,â he added); even snagging The Chainsmokers to produce a beat for Love Yourself: Her.
One listen to the tightly produced record â which looks likely to make a big splash on the Billboard 200 next week â and the passion is palpable from the intense lead single âDNA,â the societal commentary in âGo Go,â among multiple lyrics and moments that feel ripped from the membersâ personal journals. Thereâs also loads of passion in Rap Monsterâs voice talking about these new songs as he sees and envisions the larger picture and message for his bandâs latest batch of forward-thinking EDM, hip-hop and pop tracks. Read on for Billboardâs deeper analysis of Love Yourself: Her with Rap Monster.
Letâs start right from the beginning with âSerendipity.â Why was this the right song to choose as the intro and kick off the era?
When I wrote the lyrics, melodies and the first themes of âSerendipity,â I tried to come up with some rare things you find in life, something very special, like the calico, three-striped cat; things that have extraordinary meanings in peopleâs lives. I wanted to share this moment.
I was reading the lyrics are gender neutral, which I think is really powerful. Was that a conscious decision?
The lyrics were based on rare and special things in life. So, I thought, those feelings transcend genders, cultures and barriers between people.
We always put out the âIntroâ just before releasing our single, so the intro is taking the role of telling the concept of this album. But âSerendipityâ was actually the right song to share the feelings of our single, âDNA.â The title is about how our DNA is connected in the universe, I think that was the right feel for this album.
Letâs talk about âDNA.â How does this single continue and progress the story of BTS?
When weâre talking about our title tracks, âDNAâ is about the expression of a young, passionate love. The lyrics are like, âThe two of us our connected fatefully from the start, our DNA was just the one thing.â At the same time, âDNAâ is taking BTS to new ground. We tried to apply new grammar and perspectives â if you listen to the song, youâll understand what Iâm trying to say â itâs very different from our previous music, technically and musically. I believe itâs going to be the starting point of a second chapter of our career; the beginning of our Chapter Two.
âBest of Meâ is really impressive. It sounds like The Chainsmokers, but it also sounds like BTS. You didnât lose yourself which isnât easy when collaborating with new artists. What was that process like?
I love that track! We met them at BBMAs, we were so lucky. Actually, they invited us to their concert just the other day â they had a huge concert in Korea and we sang âCloserâ together. For âBest of Me,â they gave us several tracks and samples months ago, we and our producers picked one sample, like, âOkay, this is fit for our next album.â So we worked on it, we sent it to them, we asked them what they think of the track we developed and got their opinions. And we made it! Iâm so excited for it. [Laughs]
Your albums always have deeper social and society commentaries. Letâs talk about some of the topics with this release. âGo Goâ instantly comes to mind.
âGo Goâ is a trendy song, but itâs about how our young generation are living their lives with low expectations and standards so people are upset with reality; they have little hope and thereâs so much economic hardship. We wanted to say something about it and emphasize to the world that itâs not their choice, but brutal reality that forces people to live and spend as if thereâs no future.
But in Korea, âYOLOâ has become a big key word for young people because we donât have money and itâs really hard to get a chance to earn a lot of money. I think society has a lot of problems for young people. Young people spend their money on claw crane machines at arcades and they spend like $30 on trying to win these dolls. And then itâs like, âOh! I spent all my moneyâŚshit. But I donât regret.â Thatâs the biggest luxury for Koreaâs young people: collecting accessories, cosmetics, thatâs what they think is a luxury. Itâs âYOLOâ because itâs like, âIâm gonna buy all this! Iâm gonna buy all this food and Iâm going to eat it! Iâm going to do it!â I think itâs sad because itâs all we can. âGo Goâ is just saying, âOkay, just do it, we wonât regret it. Just spend several bucks on the machine and eat the food!â But at the same time, the song is very easily to sing along to so I think many people will like that song, especially if they find the deeper meaning.
Of course, I have to ask about making a skit interlude out of your BBMAs acceptance speech.
You need to hear âMic Dropâ because the skit was my speech at BBMAs â Â because that was a big moment for our history â and then we put âMic Dropâ next to that because itâs like a flex â like, âOkay, weâre done. We donât need to give a shit about anything.â That was the right skit and follow-up song for this album.
The last song, âOutro: Herâ really spoke to me. It almost reads like a diary.
Ha! [Laughs]
After talking with you, it feels like it recaps the whole album and is really introspective.
I think that was the fastest work I did for this album. I wrote the verse in 20 minutes; it just came, very truthfully, from the bottom of my heart. I thought it was the right outro for this album because it is really a range of emotions â Iâm saying I met this person that I really love, this person is the love of my life right now, Iâm saying that I was confused and I was looking for love and this world is complex. But I think itâs you so, âI call you 'her,â 'cause youâre my tear.â âI think youâre the start and the end of me.â Thatâs what Iâm saying: Youâre my wonder, but youâre also my answers. Youâre my âher,â but youâre still the âtear.â
The hook is saying that love is not all about the happiness, itâs just not just about the joy, itâs not just about delight. If you want to love a person, you should know that there are tears and there can even be hatred inside of it. I think a love really includes all of that. Thatâs what I was trying to say. Itâs complex.
And if fans are so lucky to own the physical album, theyâll hear two hidden tracks at the very. Why keep them secretive?
I think theyâre hidden because you have to be a real fan of BTS to understand them. Otherwise, you wonât. Otherwise, youâd like be, âWhy are they feeling so confused about things? Theyâre good?!? Theyâre No. 1 somewhere, they have so much stuff, why are they worried?â People always talk about that. But if you are true fan of BTS and you buy the album and you listen to the hidden track â if you are an Army and we spent time together from 2013, 2014 â they could understand. Itâs kind of more special, more closer, to our true hearts.

THROUGH A RAPISTâS EYESâ (PLS TAKE TIME TO READ THIS. It may save a life, It may save your life.)
An Article from Neena Susan Thomas
âThrough a rapistâs eyes. A group of rapists and date rapists in prison were interviewâŚed on what they look for in a potential victim and here are some interesting facts:
1] The first thing men look for in a potential victim is hairstyle. They are most likely to go after a woman with a ponytail, bun! , braid, or other hairstyle that can easily be grabbed. They are also likely to go after a woman with long hair. Women with short hair are not common targets.
2] The second thing men look for is clothing. They will look for women whoâs clothing is easy to remove quickly. Many of them carry scissors around to cut clothing.
3] They also look for women using their cell phone, searching through their purse or doing other activities while walking because they are off guard and can be easily overpowered.
4] The number one place women are abducted from / attacked at is grocery store parking lots.
5] Number two is office parking lots/garages.
6] Number three is public restrooms.
7] The thing about these men is that they are looking to grab a woman and quickly move her to a second location where they donât have to worry about getting caught.
8] If you put up any kind of a fight at all, they get discouraged because it only takes a minute or two for them to realize that going after you isnât worth it because it will be time-consuming.
9] These men said they would not pick on women who have umbrellas,or other similar objects that can be used from a distance, in their hands.
10] Keys are not a deterrent because you have to get really close to the attacker to use them as a weapon. So, the idea is to convince these guys youâre not worth it.
POINTS THAT WE SHOULD REMEMBER:
1] If someone is following behind you on a street or in a garage or with you in an elevator or stairwell, look them in the face and ask them a question, like what time is it, or make general small talk: canât believe it is so cold out here, weâre in for a bad winter. Now that youâve seen their faces and could identify them in a line- up, you lose appeal as a target.
2] If someone is coming toward you, hold out your hands in front of you and yell Stop or Stay back! Most of the rapists this man talked to said theyâd leave a woman alone if she yelled or showed that she would not be afraid to fight back. Again, they are looking for an EASY target.
3] If you carry pepper spray (this instructor was a huge advocate of it and carries it with him wherever he goes,) yelling I HAVE PEPPER SPRAY and holding it out will be a deterrent.
4] If someone grabs you, you canât beat them with strength but you can do it by outsmarting them. If you are grabbed around the waist from behind, pinch the attacker either under the arm between the elbow and armpit or in the upper inner thigh â HARD. One woman in a class this guy taught told him she used the underarm pinch on a guy who was trying to date rape her and was so upset she broke through the skin and tore out muscle strands the guy needed stitches. Try pinching yourself in those places as hard as you can stand it; it really hurts.
5] After the initial hit, always go for the groin. I know from a particularly unfortunate experience that if you slap a guyâs parts it is extremely painful. You might think that youâll anger the guy and make him want to hurt you more, but the thing these rapists told our instructor is that they want a woman who will not cause him a lot of trouble. Start causing trouble, and heâs out of there.
6] When the guy puts his hands up to you, grab his first two fingers and bend them back as far as possible with as much pressure pushing down on them as possible. The instructor did it to me without using much pressure, and I ended up on my knees and both knuckles cracked audibly.
7] Of course the things we always hear still apply. Always be aware of your surroundings, take someone with you if you can and if you see any odd behavior, donât dismiss it, go with your instincts. You may feel little silly at the time, but youâd feel much worse if the guy really was trouble.
FINALLY, PLEASE REMEMBER THESE AS WELL âŚ.
1. Tip from Tae Kwon Do: The elbow is the strongest point on your body. If you are close enough to use it, do it.
2. Learned this from a tourist guide to New Orleans : if a robber asks for your wallet and/or purse, DO NOT HAND IT TO HIM. Toss it away from youâŚ. chances are that he is more interested in your wallet and/or purse than you and he will go for the wallet/purse. RUN LIKE MAD IN THE OTHER DIRECTION!
3. If you are ever thrown into the trunk of a car: Kick out the back tail lights and stick your arm out the hole and start waving like crazy. The driver wonât see you but everybody else will. This has saved lives.
4. Women have a tendency to get into their cars after shopping, eating, working, etc., and just sit (doing their checkbook, or making a list, etc. DONâT DO THIS! The predator will be watching you, and this is the perfect opportunity for him to get in on the passenger side, put a gun to your head, and tell you where to go. AS SOON AS YOU CLOSE the DOORS , LEAVE.
5. A few notes about getting into your car in a parking lot, or parking garage:
a. Be aware: look around your car as someone may be hiding at the passenger side , peek into your car, inside the passenger side floor, and in the back seat. ( DO THIS TOO BEFORE RIDING A TAXI CAB) .
b. If you are parked next to a big van, enter your car from the passenger door. Most serial killers attack their victims by pulling them into their vans while the women are attempting to get into their cars.
c. Look at the car parked on the driverâs side of your vehicle, and the passenger side. If a male is sitting alone in the seat nearest your car, you may want to walk back into the mall, or work, and get a guard/policeman to walk you back out. IT IS ALWAYS BETTER TO BE SAFE THAN SORRY. (And better paranoid than dead.)
6. ALWAYS take the elevator instead of the stairs. (Stairwells are horrible places to be alone and the perfect crime spot).
7. If the predator has a gun and you are not under his control, ALWAYS RUN! The predator will only hit you (a running target) 4 in 100 times; And even then, it most likely WILL NOT be a vital organ. RUN!
8. As women, we are always trying to be sympathetic: STOP IT! It may get you raped, or killed. Ted Bundy, the serial killer, was a good-looking, well educated man, who ALWAYS played on the sympathies of unsuspecting women. He walked with a cane, or a limp, and often asked âfor helpâ into his vehicle or with his vehicle, which is when he abducted his next victim.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that the world we live in has a lot of crazies in it and itâs better safe than sorry.

The mistreatment of Jin - a BigHit callout post
A lot of people seem to think that BigHit could never do wrong and know whatâs best for BTS. They think BigHit and BTS are a âfamilyâ. Well itâs time to wake up..! BigHit isnât any better when compared to big companies like SM or YG for example. Theyâre just as problematic like K-Pop companies often tend to be. The perfect example of this is how theyâve been treating Jin these past 4 years.
!! - a few of these facts are just borderline emotional abuse..
okay, letâs get started:
- Apparently Bang-PD walked around calling Jin fat???? wtf (this was 2013, before their debut and around the same time Jin went on a diet no one talks about where he only ate chicken breast for A YEAR.)
- And guess what? Bang-PD isnât the only one who has called Jin fat: even his manager did. Fortunately they fired him because he was mistreating Jungkook.
- Jin majored in acting but in the House of ARMY, he got all the insignificant roles with basically zero dialogue. Yoongi even said Seokjin had texted him, shocked that he didnât have any dialogue in the script. In the Making of-video he was clearly pissed: when the camera man said theyâll be filming Jin next he said âOh, wow. Do I get to appear alone?â asdfghjkl. Jin was salty, but tried so hard to be positive. (he even avoided looking straight into the camera while they were interviewing him.. on the inside he was definitely feeling wronged.)
- Letâs be honest. BigHit could easily push him in the OST direction or debut him as an actor if they wanted, but no.
- Jin was once forced to perform even though he had hurt his neck in Kcon Paris. BigHit never made an official report about his condition⌠(itâs funny how they made a report about namjoonâs toe and sugaâs ear but not this.)
- Now letâs talk about his LINES. Remember Blood, Sweat and Tears where he had to share his few lines with Jimin? That was the most unnecessary thing ever. (later in the japanese ver. they made jinâs voice stand out more than jiminâs. lol I guess even BigShit felt a bit guilty??) Iâve seen people trying to defend this by saying that itâs okay because Jin was the ~Main Character~ in the MV. But honestly, where is the logic in that? BTS are a K-pop group! Their voices are the most important thing about them!
- Jin is the only one who didnât get a single line in any of the year end 2016 special stages (rainism: jungkook, as i told you: jimin, v, jungkook & class idea: namjoon, hoseok, jungkook⌠suga wasnât there because of his ear injury.) He was just a backup dancer and nothing else.
- Remember when people were hyping up Spring Day because apparently this was supposed to be the song where Jin would shine⌠even V said Jin would surprise us all and umm.. well he didnât.
- BigHit removed Jin from the thumbnail of Not Today MV because ????
- Speaking of Not Today. Letâs talk about this fuck upâŚ
- *coughs* This was his only solo shot and it lasted about 2 seconds. Really. BTS filmed for almost 24 hours in cold weather and youâre telling me this is the only shot of Jin that was âgood enoughâ. I donât think so, because we saw the Behind the scenes-video and they were filming Jin quite a lot. They just didnât use the clips.
- They keep telling Jin his voice is suited for ballads, but Butterfly was a ballad and he was once again the vocal who had the least amount of lines. (and some of them were not even lines like repeating âuntrueâ is.. not really a line)
- ⌠so basically the ballad comment was just some bs excuse, letâs be real no one fits only 1 type of music. Plus here are some Bangtanâs slower/not hiphop songs I think Jinâs voice could easily be fitted in but he still got the least amount of lines: Spring Day Studio Version, Miss Right, YNWA, Just One Day, Outro: Propose, House of Cards, CoffeeâŚ
- Now the most recent fuck up is BTSâ cover of Seo Taijiâs song âCome Back Homeâ and people are still debating whether Jin has ANY lines at all. The MV for the song was uploaded to CJENMMUSICâs official youtube and their header was changed to a⌠group photo⌠of BTS⌠except Jin was nowhere to be seen. The fact that they forgot Jin is unbelievable and just plain disrespectful. No product should ever be released without approval and double check. None. And while we donât know if BigHit had anything to do with the header, whose fault it is that even these other companies tend to forget Jin because they arenât promoting him enough? This was not a simple mistake. It means that design and marketing teams from HUGE companies like CJEN donât see him.
