And  he’d  sat  perfectly  still  as  she  did  so,    hardly  concerned  by  her  hands  in  his  hair  and  clearly  stupidly  so.    If  he’d  said  something,    she  would  have  stopped.    So  obviously  he’d  said  nothing.    Zuko  says  nothing  when  she  pulls  her  hands  away  as well  even  though  he’s  got  a  complaint  on  his  tongue.    Only  when  he  turns  to  look  at  @imaguk  and  she’s  got  that  look  in  her  eye  that  usually  gets  him  into  trouble  for  her  does  he  snap,    ❝    What?    ❞  Bristling,    he  hikes  his  shoulders  to  his  ears  and  scowls.    Likely  if  he  knew  what  she’s  done  to  him,    he’d  have  more  to  say,    but  in  his  ignorance,    all  he  can  manage  is,    ❝    Stop  looking  at  me  like  that.    It’s  your  turn  to  pay  for  study  snacks,    not  mine.    ❞

one of my favorite zuko traits is his bravery. too many people mischaracterize him as a coward. literally the only thing he’s afraid of is his dad. this is the same dude that jumped onto aang’s glider no fucks given in season 1 because he was that desperate to catch him.

i like writing young fire lord zuko because he's still grappling with his identity and he's still in the trenches of his trauma and unlearning the harm done to him and the harm he's done. and something i think is so important for someone who is going through that is that it's not just BAM he's redeemed and he's changing everything for the better and it's perfect. i think it's just as important to highlight zuko's conflict with trying not to Be Like Ozai as it is for people to be wary of zuko because He Is Zuko. like i think he's struggling both with taking up his father's horrible mantle but also with the name he's created for himself. because not only is it "zuko is a victim and he's trying to heal" but it's also "zuko was horrible and he has to reconcile that side of himself with who he wants to be going forward" and that's not easy

They  are  curtailed  of  light,    so  shrouded  in  darkness  are  they  that  only  shadows  cling  to  either  of  their  spines.    Only  the  white  details  of  the  Blue  Spirit’s  mask  reflect  enough  that  he  might  be  spied  in  the  dark  if  anyone  were  within  range  to  look  for  them.    Yet  none  lurk  other  than  these  two  beasts.    Around  them,    even  the  breeze  is  still  as  if  halted  by  fear  at  the  very  presence  of  them,    but  it  is  not  all  silent.    Somewhere  there  is  breath  and  life,    though  it  is  some  distance  enough  away  to  skirt  their  threat.

Still,    the  only  true threat  is  the  defensive  stature  they  both  take  on  at  the  sight  of  one  another.    They  cross  paths  perhaps  on  accident,    but  the  Myth  in  the  mask  spares  Fate  no  doubt  for  its  role  in  his  journey.    Zuko  does  not  split  his  blade  in  two  yet;    instead  he  wields  his  dao  sword  in  one  hand,    the  tang  parallel  to  his  body  as  he  keeps  it  flush  to  his  side.    Like  this,    the  Executioner  can  see  the  weapon,    but  it  is  not  yet  leveled  at  them  in  the  offensive.

The  air  has  gone  thick  with  apprehension.    Every  soldier  posted  guard  at  a  door  is  half  in  motion  as  if  unconvinced  that  coming  to  their  aid  is  an  order  they  ought  not  execute.    They  are  wary  and  it  only  makes  sense  that  they  weave  caution  into  each  decision  they  make.    What  of  their  old  Fire  Lord  exists  in  his  heir?    Is  it  temper  that  will  meet  their  every  movement?    Is  it  violence  or  rage  or  ash  before  even  a  flame  might  light  with  how  quickly  it  all  could  go  poorly?

There  is  tea  splashed  across  the  table.    The  steam  curls  leisurely  from  the  mess,    as  unaware  as  @warriorled  is  by  the  tension  stiffening  Zuko’s  shoulders.    Around  them,    the  guards  are  still  trying  to  guage  the  right  move;    Zuko,    too,    doesn’t  know  how  to  proceed  for  a  moment  too  long.    Is  it  weakness  they  will  see  if  he  does  not  urge  them  to  do  something?    Is  it  fear  he  will  instill  in  them  if  he  gives  an  order  at  all?    What  would  his  Uncle  do?    Make  a  joke,    probably.

❝    It’s  fine,    ❞  says  the  young  Fire  Lord  at  last.    If  his  words  are  stilted,    he  hopes  Sokka  will  not  tease  him  for  it.    Or  maybe  that  would  help.    Zuko  sets  down  his  own  cup,    rises  half  onto  his  knees  to  lean  forward,    and  inspects  the  damage.    ❝    I  thought  you  might  have  learned  manners  by  now,    but  maybe  I’m  mistaken.    Unless  you  forgot  them  back  home.  .  .  ?    ❞
