She  must  think  he  enjoys  this.    She  must  think  that  he  takes  great  pleasure  in  seeing  his  estranged  sister  humbled  as  fiercely  as  this.    Azula  does  not  sit  behind  bars,    but  she  looks  the  part  of  a  prisoner.    What  @huozhi  doesn’t  know  is  how  badly  Zuko  wishes  he  could  appreciate  such  a  sight.    His  sister  speaks  with  flames  for  teeth  and  refuses  to  look  at  him,    and  he  isn’t  sure  between  the  two  of  them  for  whom  it  is  kinder  that  they  cannot  see  each  other’s  faces.

As  Fire  Lord,    he  has  advisors  now.    He  is sure  that  they  fear  him as much as they hold him in contempt;    they  think  that  he  will  lose  his  temper  and  can  never  quite  manage  to  lose  the  wariness  of  their  features.    Some  of  them  have  nothing  at  all  to  say  to  him.    All  of  it  makes  his  skin  itch.    But  somehow  none  of  this  compares  to  the  burn  of  his  sister’s  continued  rejection,    as  though  he  could  have  found  hope  even  after  all  this  time  that  maybe  they  would–  Well.    Foolish  of  him,    then.

❝    Yes,    ❞  Zuko  says.    His  voice  is  measured,    drawn  along  the  path  of  his  tongue  that  she  might  perceive  his  indifference.    She  isn’t  looking  at  him  to  see  his  hands  trembling  at  his  sides.    ❝    I  wonder  where  you  learned  that.    Father  never  had  any  difficulty  deciding  anything  for  either  of  us.    Nor  did  you,    of  course.    But  I  appreciate  the  lesson  all  the  same,    sister.    I’ll  keep  that  in  mind  next  time  I  check  on  your  progress.    Maybe  you  will  have  learned  something,    too.    ❞

ty lee was no stranger to life on the road. she had grown accustomed to packing up her belongings and moving every two weeks with the circus. the gaggle of oddballs and performers would travel from town to town with full bellies from their last successful run and even fuller hearts from the joy of their audiences. they would stop at small villages, when they had the time, to explore the local settlements and pocket a souvenir or two. ty lee loved the short travels almost as much as she loved the shows they put on. but what she had quickly come to realize was that travelling with azula was a very different experience.

her stomach filled with dread everytime the princess barked orders for them to get up and move. part of it was due to the ferocious gleam in the young girl’s eyes and part of it was their goal in general. hunting down iroh and zuko made her chest clench. she had practically grown up in the fire nation palace and the two fugitives were as much family as azula was. it left a bitter taste in her mouth to imagine roping them up and hauling them back home. she was smart enough to not voice those thoughts to azula. instead, she plastered a cheery smile across her face and peered over the other’s shoulder at the map spread across the dirt. “ sooo, ” she started in a singsong tune. “ where to next ? ”

she plopped down on the other side of the map with her legs crossed in seemingly impossible angles. ty lee reached her arm across the drawings of mountains and roads to point at three circles in the corner. “ oooh, let’s go here. pleaaaase, zula. ” she pleaded gently. “ they’re natural hot springs and i think we so need a bit of relaxation. it’d be a fun pit stop ! ”

the boiling rock prisoners had all returned to their cells for the night . suki couldn't help but find that her cell wasn't much different from solitary confinement aside from the size of the space ; no window to the outside , no natural light , and nothing to do but meditate to make the time pass quicker . but tonight would not be like other nights , not when the door suddenly unlatches and creaks open , the warden's grating voice commanding her to her feet . she complies , and spies the familiar silhouette in the doorway stepping inside , the silhouette of her jailer .

" don't you have better things to do than come here to annoy me , oh mighty princess ? "

eyes cast up to the nightsky, june's mind seems to have wandered off - she might be speaking to the girl before her, but her thoughts seem detached from the situation. she is thinking about herself as well ( june sees herself in this girl, that's never good ). perhaps, in the way she speaks to the princess, june is talking to some deep, twisted corner of her mind filled with self pity.
