I’ve finally started working on character sheets for my Dunkaerionlings Brightflame AU.
Raised on tales of Dunk and Egg, Maegor Brightflame came to believe that honor, duty, and perseverance could mend any wound. Dunk can do this. He can. He can do this.
He takes a deep breath, and opens the door to meet the eye of an older man behind the counter. Dunk can't do this.
But he slaps the money Lyonel and Raymun had handed him down on the counter and asks for the best man he can get. With this money, he gets the best. Because his friends found out he's a virgin, and Dunk just sort of went along with their plan of finally getting him laid.
Which is how he found himself at this exclusive sopv club, glancing around like he's buying crack and not about to be balls deep in it. The old man gives him a room number, and he goes.
His face goes an instant shade of red when he enters, finding a pale, round ass already waiting for him. Whoever it belongs to is bent over, their upper half secluded anonymously through a padded hole in the wall.
They're small, that's the first thing Dunk notices. Pale, soft, expensive looking, with the very tip of a scar visible on their hip. He wastes no time, already rock hard and leaking in his briefs.
It takes everything in him not to come when he sinks in that tight hole for the first time, and even more when he hears the man moan, almost in surprise. It's sweet and breathy, and fuck Dunk just wants to hear it again. He pulls out, slams back in, and listens to that voice come undone while that slender body goes tense under his palms.
He grips his hips hard, fucking into him harder, groaning when the man humps himself back into Dunk's thrusts. The little private room is full of the sounds of their fucking. Skin against skin. Moan matching moan.
And finally, when Dunk comes, he sees the light. He sees God. He sees his hopes and dreams right there in that glory hole with a faceless man whose ass he just shot his load on.
He awkwardly thanks him after, gives his wet ass cheek a little pat, and leaves without ever knowing who he just lost his virginity to.
Fast forward to the start of semester, where he gets paired up with rich asshole Aerion Targaryen for their semester-long research project. It is a topic of their choosing and the only assignment in the class. The final grade is based entirely on it.
Dunk doesn't have much hope. Aerion is vain, arrogant, rude, cruel, and so far out of touch with reality that it isn't funny. But surprisingly, the guy is serious about his education, and, albeit rudely and with many trials and tribulations, manages to work together with Dunk to pull together a good project.
Slowly throughout the semester, they get to know each other during late night research in the library, at various museums, and Aerion's condo. Dunk starts to see through the facade, and Aerion begins to understand what it means for his company to be enjoyed and not simply tolerated. The closer they get, the more Dunk just really, really wants to kiss him.
And then it happens. Aerion reaches for something up high and hisses in pain. His hand shoots to his hip as he hobbles to a chair, and asks Dunk to get his bag. From it, he pulls a tube of medicated ointment and tells Dunk to turn around.
Dunk being Dunk, though, peeks over his shoulder to see what the fuss was, and gets the shock of his life when he sees the scar on Aerion's hip. Pale hips. Slender hips. Soft hips. Hips that look like he could fit his hands around and—
Oh my god.
“You're him!” Dunk blurts, and Aerion looks at him like he's dumb until he blurts out the rest. The club, the private room, his virginity. Aerion's face goes various shades of pale and then red, because no one's ever clocked him for being the most expensive and sought after person there. He rarely even works, only when he's particularly horny, and had made time in his schedule for someone willing to pay good money.
He hadn't known that person would have a cock that ruined him for anyone else. That he wouldn't be able to stop thinking about how big it was and how deep it hit. Of how he lost control of himself and fucked back in earnest.
And so obviously the only natural thing for them to do upon finding all of this out in Aerion's study, is to have raunchy, debaucherous sex. Dunk bends Aerion over the table and fucks him hard, until the table is creaking and scraping across the floor with the force of his thrusting. Aerion is holding the back of one knee to keep it bent up, the other hand gripping the edge of the table to steady himself as he moans unabashedly to Dunk's pounding.
They fuck on every surface they can that night. That table, up against a book case, pressed against one of the floor to ceiling windows, the floor of the hallway, in Aerion's bed, in his shower. It's the single most amount of times Aerion's ever come, and he knows, just as Dunk does, that there could not possibly be anyone else meant for him.
They become the new sensation on campus after that—kind, shy, boy-next-door Dunk, and rude, loud, rich-prick Aerion. Everyone figures the sex must really be good to keep them together. They're right, of course. But it's so much more than that, now.
everyone lives nothing bad ever happens in westeros au where King Daeron lives to be old af and hosts a huge tourney to celebrate his 75th birthday or something. and Baelor is low key old at this point too, but for sure can still get it, and since it's his dad's tourney and all the noble lords will be there he enters the lists.
and dunk, who has been Baelor's sworn sword (with benefits, he's not kingsguard in this one tho)since Ashford meadow and therefore has had training and is pretty damn good at jousting now, is planning to enter as well, but he doesn't know that Baelor is. then he finds out Baelor is doing it and he's like absolutely not fuck that, I'm going withdraw. I'm good but he's Baelor fucking breakspear, I don't want that smoke.
but baelor is like no dunk do it it will be fun, and dunk would literally eat dirt if Baelor told him to so he's like ooookay I'll do it.
so they both win their first few tilts and eventually get matched against each other (we're doing a different tourney format than Ashford). and dunk is like I'm so fucking cooked. my prince boyfriend is about to put me in the dirt so bad.
and all of Dunk's knight buddies are hyping him up like crazy, so he goes for the first tilt, and is about to throw up from nerves meanwhile Baelor is reliving the glory days and having the time of his life.
first tilt, they both get good hits but stay on, and dunks friends are going absolutely crazy, like game 7 Stanley cup overtime win celebration, bc he made it for one pass.
and Dunk's like holy fuck. I'm doing it! I'm doing it!
second pass, same thing.
third pass. we're still on.
they break seven fucking lances.
and the whole tourney is going crazy. singers are already writing songs about it. dunk is like I'm a fucking jousting weapon, I didn't realize I had gotten so good.
then from across the lists, Baelor winks at him or something, and Dunk realizes he's been fucking with him the whole time. like could have put him in the dirt at any point but was just playing him. and he's good enough that like you wouldn't notice. he made it look real.
eighth pass. Dunk gets absolutely yoinked. but baelor is having such a great time he's like ayyy let's continue with swords!! and dunks like jokes on you, I'm better with a sword and you're old and I'm in my prime.
and it takes every bit of Dunk's skill and strength but he fucking wins it.
and baelor is so very chivalrous about it meanwhile dunk is like I'm going to kill my boyfriend, but also everyone is cheering for him and he's the man of the hour and everyone thinks he's the coolest guy around.
anyway he probs gets absolutely dogged the next round because he's so tired but it doesn't matter bc that was the greatest thing anyone has ever seen

ok i'm starting off STRONG bc this is highkey my favorite dunk ship ever and also my fav dunkbaelor writer. but. this fic is genuinely SO good y'all. the writing is amazing and while the updates are a little slower, it is definitely worth the wait. modern aus can be a little tricky, but this author does it so well. it delves into topics very in-depth and overall creates a lot of substance to gnaw on with every chapter. such an amazing read!!

Dunk tries his best to love all of his children equally where Aerion does not hide the fact that he has favorites at all.
Most of the Dunkaerionlings get along well with their cousins.
Aerion tried to marry his oldest children to each other and it never works (to Dunk’s relief) (Maegor eloped, Rhaenyra got his father (Dunk) to arrange her a marriage away from King’s Landing with the help of her Uncle Egg, Daemon got married without his permission, and Alysanne fell in love)
Aerion doesn't die as early in this au as in canon so Dunk, Aerion and the children are happy. However, Dunk still dies in Summerhall and Aerion a year later from drinking wildfire. I like to think that Dunk helped Aerion to not succumb to his dreams despite multiple attempts from others to poison the prince’s ears. Dunk and their children’s deaths only broke what held Aerion back from committing the act. Aerion outlived five children by the time of his death: (in order of death) Alysanne, Rhaelon, Aemond, Merax, Maegor.
When Egg became king, he kind of used some of the dunkaerionlings as political pawns and married them to different houses throughout the kingdom. Aerion was opposed to Egg having that much power over his OWN children but he can’t really do anything about it because Egg’s the one in power and the matches Egg made really were advantageous (It doesn’t mean that Aerion doesn’t complain). Egg tried his best to give them good and loving matches though. Most of them did enter love marriages!
Dunk is the reincarnation of Duncan the Unwavering Sword, good brother to Daeron II Targaryen, the good kings shield and sword. He died fighting in the Blackfyre rebellion protecting his brothers first born son Baelor. As memorial of Duncan, children far and wide are named in honour of his memory, some hoping to gain favour from the crown and others hoping their child lives up to their names.
When Dunk is a child he has dreams of the impossible, he dreams he is in a training yard being taught by the royal master at arms, he's taught politics by the royal Maester, he's taught dances and social cues by stewards and he's even brother to the heir to the throne. Dunk knows logically it is absurd, so he thinks nothing of his 'not memories' and goes about his day.
Daeron cannot look any of the children named for his brother in the eyes, he finds it painful to look into a child's eye and not see his Duncan, they may have his name but no one could ever capture his devotion and love. Anyone who had known Duncan personally find it abhorrent that people are just naming their children so callously, they would hope his story would inspire people to overcome and dedicate themselves to being better instead it made some royals greedy for approval from the crown.
When the King hosts a ball to commemorate the anniversary, he invites all the royals and all the knights including hedge knights (his brother had a fondness for them as he said they were true men who did their duties for the people rather than any stories that would come about after they had served) in doing so Ser Arlan Pennytree and his gentle giant squire end up joining the ball. When Daeron lands eyes on Dunk he is floored and nearly bursts into tears seeing a younger version of the brother he lost. His eyes sting and his palms sweat, the room spins and he very nearly passes out. If not for his wife he would of wept and thrown himself at Dunk's feet.
Daeron isn't the only one to notice the giant squire, all his brothers in arms have stopped still and can't seem to catch their breaths, his half brother Brynden and sister Shiera haven't stopped staring since he entered the hall. Baelor is struck by a deep longing to go to him and beg forgiveness, all the royals who had known him feel as of their seeing a ghost in the flesh. Someone had actually passed out.
Dunk as always is oblivious. Arlan is weirded out.
Eventually someone asks Dunk his name and they don't know wether to be grateful or sad that he is named Dunk and not Duncan.
Premise: What if Baelor lives because Maekar begged his Aunt Shiera to do something… Anything?!
And so she does her blood magic mumbo jumbo and somehow it goes wrong (or maybe that was the plan, we don’t know!) and Baelor lives, BUT Baelor and Maekar swap souls/bodies during the ritual.
Pairing: Aerion x Dunk,Valarr x Daeron x Kiera, Baekar if you squint // could be omegaverse but also works if not
Plot Points:
They wake up seven days after the trial in each other’s bodies. Freak out ensues, specially since Baelor(Maekar) was told to take it easy and stay in bed, meanwhile people are looking at Maekar(Baelor) funny because he “killed” his brother.
They agree to live each others’ lives and not tell anyone while Shiera and Bloodraven figure out how to reverse it because the Faith would be up in arms if it leaks that they used blood magic.
Maekar(Baelor) agrees to send Aegon with Ser Duncan for two years, and then he would serve as Baelor’s guard. Of course the real Maekar is wroth and threatens to geld his brother, which makes the maesters pause because why is the usually calm Heir yelling and cursing?
Maekar(Baelor) also makes Dunk take Aerion with him and Aegon, which displeases EVERYONE, but who are they to argue when the father of the child commanded? After all, even innocent, Dunk still put hands on the blood of the Dragon or some drivel Maekar(Baelor) comes up with.
Baelor(Maekar) makes for a poor patient and Valarr is weirded out that his father doesn’t talk to him like he used to and encounters a dazed Daeron with tears in his eyes because his father just hugged him and told him he was proud of him. It shakes the cousins to their core, and they end up having a drunken threesome with Kiera.
Baelor often forgets he is Maekar and order people about nicely, making people suspicious that Maekar is trying to get into their good graces after what he has done to his brother.
Maekar gets bored and explores his brother’s body and has some weird ideas.
The brothers decide to go to Summerhall to “heal”, including everyone - Aerion still has to heal before they go hedge knighting the realm. The King is being handled by Bloodraven anyway, so they all journey to the Stormlands. Weird/awkward vibes from the three who had sex, angsty/cunty vibes from the threesome who are being forced to travel together.
Baelor(Maekar) tries to write their father but realizes that his handwriting is his own, so the brothers sequestered themselves in Maekar’s solar to address the realms (and their parent’s) issues together.
Daeron is mostly sober, his dreams have changed since the trial as well as he’s to horrified that he slept with both Valarr and Kiera when he was drunk that he tried his best not to get that drunk anymore.
Kiera’s a vibe. She actually, for the first time in years, had fun having sex, and is determined to lure both the men into having an encore or a thousand.
Dunk is done being referree to the warring younger brothers and locks them up in a room to work out their issues. He goes right back in when he hears banging within five minutes. He ends up having to hold back Aegon from knifing his brother and forces Aerion to apologize.
Healing occurs all over, though shenanigans cannot be avoided, like Egg and Aerion squabbling, both trying to keep Dunk’s attention on them. Kiera being a man hunter while Daeron and Valarr both tries to avoid her only to end up always finding each other. Maekar and Baelor being weird to each other and dealing with each other’s issues - maybe the girls are a little bit more feral and Baelor(Maekar) lets Maekar(Baelor) handle it all by himself, glad to see his unflappable brother being totally flapped by two unhinged pre-teen girls.
Valarr and Daeron have sex while Kiera watches in the shadows and only reveals herself when they’re about to finish. Saying something like “I’m hurt you two won’t include me.” Or “Finally! Now move over I wanna join too!” Baelor and Maekar finds out and argue about how timo handle it when Kiera admits she’s pregnant but she doesn’t know who the father is.
Meanwhile Baelor and Maekar are absorbed in trying to get their situation handled, specially when the Spring Sickness came and they’re all stuck in Summerhall, Jena and Matarys are safe in Dragonstone but the King dies and now Baelor(Maekar) is panicking because he doesn’t know how to be King. Maekar(Baelor) soothes him as best he could.
Aerion falls in love with Dunk though he never admits it, but he follows the hedge knight everywhere, even making peace with Aegon to keep his knight happy. Dunk figures it out along the way and is happy but doesn’t confront Aerion about it. He just lets things happen. Egg knows of course and he’s conflicted between wanting to keep Dunk close and making Aerion happy.
It could end both ways, either they never unswap, leading them to come clean to their family and everyone freaking out at first but gradually settling into their roles (maybe maekar x Jena x Baelor endgame) OR they unswapp during the coronation months later without their family figuring it out but of course there’s always that suspicion that “something” happened at Ashford, Baelor kinda keeps some of Maekar’s more ruthless characteristics and Maekar keeps some of Baelor’s softer ones. All their children are better for it.
One thing I find fascinating is that there are like no good outcomes from the Trial of Seven, it’s a mess any way you slice it.
However a scenario where Dunk dies instead of Baelor is like the worst of them all. Especially if he lives long enough to win and swear himself to Baelor and then dies in Baelors arms.
Like yes he is some no name Hedge Knight and his death absolutely shouldn’t matter but because it’s Dunk the ripple effects are insane.
Egg is never forgiving his family or himself. This is Aerions fault, Aerion has killed his brother/father for doing the right thing and there is no world where that vengeance and hate doesn’t ruin Egg. There is no quiet moment with Maekar as he drops the knife there’s only a grieving child screaming at his father to let go of him so he can rid the world of a monster wearing human skin. He’s never forgiving his father either for helping to get Ser Duncan killed and there is just nothing Maekar can do to bridge that gap with his son. There is rot in his house and now there is no kind Hedge Knight to guide Egg on his future path. I can easily imagine Egg running away to be a Hedge Knight in this scenario as he tries to carry on Ser Duncan’s legacy as best he can.
Baelor is alive but has to live with the knowledge that his family killed the last honourable knight in Westeros. In the same way Baelor haunts Dunks narrative Dunk is forever haunting Baelor. Every time he has to make a ‘dishonourable’ choice as King or is considering a knight before him he can feel Ser Duncan’s gaze in the back of his neck. Cannot look at Aerion ever again. Idk just Baelor judging every knight he meets against the imaginary Ser Duncan the Tall he has on a pedestal in his mind and they (and he) just never living up to those standards. Will not shut the fuck up about the good knight he knew for less than 48 hours. The good man who was for a moment his man.
Targaryen PR? On the floor. The Targaryens don’t care for justice or honour, didn’t you hear about how they killed Ser Duncan the Tall? The man larger and stronger than an elm tree who saved those maidens from the wicked Prince Aerion Brightflame? Yes Breakspear fought for him but we all know he did it so that he could just appear like he cared about justice. It was a rotten thing they did to him and he was right in his reply. Sing the one about the brave knight and the wicked red dragon again won’t you bard? It always goes over well.
Lyonel Baratheon now has a legitimate grievance against the Targaryens 30 years early. Genuinely acting like he’s Ser Duncan’s widow the way he’s grieving and railing against the royal family. They killed his Knight! Somehow gets Dunks shield and has it hanging up in the throne room of Storms End and pointedly brings it with him whenever he gets dragged to court. Baelor sees the shield once and it genuinely nearly kills him. The rest of the time Lyonels there they basically have a grieving widow off (Dunks been dead for a good decade).
Raymun Fosserway (Dunks actual widow) is beyond justified in his hatred of the Targaryens, always said there was something wrong with that family and he was damned right! Green Apple Fosserways grow up knowing that the royals can’t be trusted.
Idk like the fact that if Dunk won and then died in the trial of Seven there should be no ramifications. But because it’s Dunk his death probably brings down House Targaryen a good few decades earlier rather than saving it.
