(Continuing Steve's second visit to the Hagans' from here)
"Aunt Jenny is talking to my mom in the kitchen," Tommy informs Steve. "They're having grown up time."
He holds the door open for his dad and uncle to walk through while Steve takes off his shoes. He continues, "Grown up time means that they might want us to leave. If they do, you can't cry about it."
"You look like you cry a lot."
"I don't!" Steve protests. "My dad tells me to go away all the time and I never cry."
Steve sits his shoes neatly against the wall and points out, "I didn't cry on the first day of school. You did. You cried a lot and-"
"Boys," David cuts in. "I'm sure your mom is going to want to see all of us. Tom, you can introduce Steve to Jenny."
"Yeah!" Tommy jumps, pulling Steve in the direction of the kitchen. "Aunt Jenny is so cool, Steve, so try not to be weird, okay. I want her to like you."
"I don't try to be weird."
"I know," Tommy nods. "You can't help it."
He leads Steve, David, and Chris into the kitchen where the two women are mid-conversation at the kitchen table. Tommy doesn’t get the chance to make introductions because Steve moves past him towards his mother like, "Hi!"
"Hi, Mrs Hag-" He pauses, looking back at David for permission and getting a nod in return. He smiled, "Miss Maria, hi. I’m Steve, Tommy's friend from- Tommy's best friend. From school. I was here on Friday and I stayed the night. Do you a'member me?"
"Of course!" She smiles. "How could I forget the sweetest little friend any of my boys have ever brought home."
"I’m not little, I’m big," Steve corrects her. "But I’m happy you 'member me. Some people forget."
Maria doesn't quite know what to say to that but she doesn't have to figure it out because Tommy is whisper hissing at her to, "Hug him, Mom."
Steve goes pink but falls into Maria's arms when she opens them. He melts into the embrace and she only lets go when he does, telling him, "I’m happy you're here, sweetheart."
"Steve!" Tommy complains impatiently. "You already met my mom. Come meet Aunt Jenny. She's way cooler."
"I think you're cool," Steve whispers to Maria and then darts over to Tommy and Jenny. "Hi, I’m-"
"This is Steve," Tommy cuts in, finally able to make his introductions. "He's my best friend. He weird but I like that about him. He talks back to the teacher sometimes and it's funny."
"Oh," Jenny says. "Hello?"
"Steve, this is Aunt Jenny," Tommy continues. "She can do a backflip."
"Really?!" Steve awes. "Did you know that your Tommy's favorite aunt? He talks about you. All the time."
He looks back at Chris before adding, "He doesn't talk about no one else."
"Well, that feels targeted," Chris says to his brother as he watched his nephew try to convince his wife to do a flip. He knows she'll give in.
He turns to his brother and asks David, "So, are you filling out the adoption papers or am I?"
