One Piece Chapter 1170 Reactions and Theory {spoilers}
First of all, let's get out the immediate reaction!
Something is seriously broken with the men of One Piece Universe.
Why do you all only express love when you are about to die? Maybe if you all losers had expressed your feelings more often when alive, some of your children would've had a better time on the planet…
THIS HURT!
And that's how King Harald doomed his son. Because for Loki, explaining things would be a hassle, and he wouldn't let his father's reputation get marred, so he settles to play the role of an insane Villain for his people.
Vulnerable people need a bad guy to pin all their anguish on. This is how a scapegoat is made, bit by bit, a tragic birth in which the person had no control, outsiders making your life hell, expectations that you never promised to fulfil, and the number of people who show you kindness grow fewer and fewer with time, and thus you decide to lean into the role that people think you are because hating you provides them a sense of control and comfort.
Oh dear, Loki is going to our new meow-meow...
So Figerland Garling tried to get his lost son back, and Roger whooped his arse. This is why I love the found family trope. A bunch of idiots raising a kid just right for him to change the world for the better. This also makes sense why Shanks didn't want to take Luffy on his ship; he knew the life on the deck was not always easy. He must've recalled how, because of him, the crew had to be careful and mindful with a kid around.
Shanks is literally a man of the Sea; he has never lived on the land!
I love that Shanks is aware his life could've been so different and for the worse had he not been raised the way he was. The Nature vs Nurture debate meets a beautiful example at its finest here.
At this point, can we all agree, the Fate these old timers love to fall back on is an unseen character who has been active from the first page. The narrative voice of the manga and Aizen's Seiyu in the Anime is the Fate. It is this very Fate telling us the story of a particular boy, whom they chose to meddle in the affairs of the humans!
Theory time: The Devil Fruits are sentient, and when Humans inherit their powers, they become the vessel of their will
I know, at this point, I sound like a broken record. BUT I TOLD YOU SOOOOOOOO!
I told you all! Some devil fruits choose their vessel! The Hito-Hito-No-Mi Model Nika chose LUFFY! The Devil Fruit judged Luffy worthy to carry on its willpower.
We never saw in the Ani/Manga how Lu managed to open the treasure box! He found the fruit and thought it was a dessert!
In OPLA, he kicked the treasure box and ended up finding it, but it was still not canon.
This is so Asian in lore development. Our myths are full of stories where no matter how strong or how determined you are, if a certain tool doesn't want you, you cannot have it.
For Example, in the Ramayana, the bow Kodanda refuses to even let any of Princess Sita's suitors pick it up because they are unworthy.
We have to stop seeing the Devil Fruit users as users and rather as vessels. I know I said it many times. I will still repeat, the fruit is a non-reactive-vessel body that keeps the powers dormant.
The human body is the active-vessel body that lets these powers thrive.
Of course, not all Devil Fruits. My guess is that the original ones or the ones that have a trail of history [as in their vessels caused the world to turn upside down] behind them are more conscious of their situations.
Addition from my social media shy bestie:
Tbh. It feels like the paramcia/logia/zoan ranks are gone. And now there’s just: Inert DF. Selective DF. Awakened DF. Inert are your standard devil fruits, Selective fruits are those that can influence who eats them, to a degree. Awakened are the fruits that correctly influence the correct person to consume them, and have now become their best.
It also makes sense why some weapons in the story have Devil Fruit powers. Examples: The CannonDog Lassoo in Alabasta or Spandam's Elephant Sword Funkfreed
If the wills or interests align, the Devil Fruit will choose its reactive vessel. My guess is, for a weapon to be selected, it has to have too many body counts or cause some upheaval to gain sentience for the Devil Fruit to pick it. We already have cursed swords in the story, so maybe something similar needs to happen to the weapons to become a DF vessel.
Blood and death have always been a great conduit for gaining power in both myths and fantasy. It is best explained in TGCF [spoilers: Xie Lian's weapon Ruòyé, a silk band, gained sentience and immense power after his parents used it to commit double suicide.] Emotions and attachments also help, but for now, I still think Luffy's Devil Fruit chose him because he saw Luffy as a worthy vessel.
I have detailed theories about this, you all can read, adding them below.
Joyboy is an awakened Holy Weapon
I have a far fetched theory for Hito-Hito-No-Mi: Model Nika
