Some of my own thoughts! (+ an impromptu Flowery character analysis!)
CHAPTER 5 SPOILERS AHEAD + WEIRD ROUTE SPOILERS!!
(Sorry this is late lmao)
First, let's get the obvious one that everyone is talking about out of the way! (Sorry for phone screenshots.)
I know everyone is talking about the side b page on the Sweepstakes updating, and yeah, I basically called it changing once chapter 5 was out.
It COMPLETELY skipping chapter 6 terrifies and delights me beyond measure. Still, I will probably NEVER play weird route, because now more than ever, it feels like I could fuck something up forever with my save file lmao.
However the details and ARG around it all are fascinating. How much did players break the game that you skip entirely a chapter that, according to Toby, clarifies a big aspect of the story???
And the fact that in both scenarios, Noelle is needed.
I dunno, fascinating, scary as fuck, lol. I hope yall doing Side B will have fun (???).
OKAY! That's all I'll be saying on weird route, cause again, I don't play it and prefer main route content.
So speaking of...
The main mysteries of the game are going to be tackled in these last two chapters! Which there aren't a lot left, and seem to mostly be Holiday related.
While I don't think these chapters will be completely devoid of humour (you can still have humour in dark moments), there's definitely going to be a distinct lack of "shenanigans".
This really emphasises the sort of finality that Chapter 5 has. The final Star Walker, the final Shadow Crystal, the final Egg, the final fun boss fight. The final fun adventure. Let's smile one last time.
Also, just cause it's a shorter chapter, doesn't mean it won't be juicy. If we're thinking lengthwise, it might be Chapter 1 length, around 4 hours, which is still so nice and meaty. And that's even without taking into account how much we'll all be taking our time to check everything in the chapter. I trust toby with the pacing.
Admittedly this is terrifying, but also exciting!!! Something WILL be clarified. Something we've been missing the piece of a puzzle to for so long. These last two chapters really feel like they're gonna be the New Home/True Lab parts of Deltarune. Not as in one to one, but that the puzzle finally begins to form a clearer picture.
I'm really looking forward to it!
Okay! Heavier stuff aside, lets look at some concept art!! I'm mainly going to be looking at the ones that interest me the most.
Once again, Temmie knocking it out of the park with these beautiful backgrounds. I think chapter 5 has to be the prettiest chapter so far, it's visually STUNNING.
My favourite part is definitely the different coloured suns for each of the flowers! Them being sun lamps in the light world is so cool.
Speaking of the flowers...
Let's go in pairs!! First Aqua and Seth!!
Naturally these two are my biases lol. Toby clearly had a solid idea for them from the beginning. Aqua naturally felt VERY Touhou inspired, and shes so simple but perfect in my eyes.
Seth is so good, and I adore that kind of very Homestuck esque vibe they give off here. They're my favourite flower, and even though many of us interpreted them with big buck teeth, this kind of open mouth with teeth is so good too. They got big teeth no matter what!
(I think the fact they accidently looked like Amethyst from Steven Universe originally is funny as shit. Toby can't escape Steven Universe at all lol.)
Now Green and Orange!!
Green is so delightfully Sesame Street and I'm glad almost nothing changed about their design! Really cute how Toby based them of his friend splendidland's artstyle, which I do remember some of their concepts from chapter 2!!
Orange. Look at her. LOOK at her! She's such a little thing and I love her. Toby says it was hard to capture her joy in her small sprites, but I think they did great! She's everything. <3
Yellow and Blue!
Yellow had two designs!! I do appreciate how scruffy he is in the first one. But you can VERY clearly see when Toby decided to lean into the whole "Friend Inside Me" aspect for his current design, quite literally basing off of Woody from Toy Story. It works great in the end!
Blue having multiple faces is such a fun aspect of his design to me. There's the normal icon like the flowers have, but then he has his own face sprite! And then he also has Mr Butterfly! Like he cannot express the full extent of his love for this new life he was given, so he comes in many forms!
Pink!!!
I haven't even played Fields of Mistria yet (I will very soon though!), and yet I knew IMMEDIATELY that the creator of the game, Claire, is who made Pink's sprites. The style is absolutely perfect for her and it's such a fun interpretation on Mad Mew Mew's original design!
She's the cutest and despite the pain she put me through for 8 hours (yes actually), Pink is absolutely my favourite secret boss now. <3
And finally, the one I've been most interested to talk about from this newsletter...
Flowery!!
(Fair warning, this got really long cause apparently I had a lot to say about this fucker lmao- whoops.)
We have two very fun pieces of concept art to go through for him, including some of Toby's notes on him character wise!
First, this silly thing.
There's something so dopey and very... Nyan Neko Sugar Girls/fanime about him here lmao. You can tell Toby REALLY wanted the flower hood to work, but alas. However, since the newsletter released, I HAVE seen some cute fanart of of younger Floweries in this dumb hoodie situation. Bro is two minutes old here lol. (Love the confirmation that he never wears that fuckass jacket.)
Second, we have this absolutely stunning character sheet for his anime intro design, done by Touko Yatabe from Studio Khara! (As a concept art student i am frothing at the mouth about this thing-)
He's perfect, like TOO perfect, and that was very much intentional. He gives the vibe of a very annoying and obnoxious anime pretty boy to an exact science. He reminds me of another blonde haired anime boy, Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club. (lmao)
But that's pretty much in line with what Toby was going for with him! Quoted from the newsletter:
The golden flower, “Gold”, was able to become his own “Mary Sue” character in the form of “Flowery”. He’s trying to be “perfect”... But he doesn’t know anything about what it’s like to really live. His interpretation of “the ideal man” is totally alien and over-the-top. He looks like a generic anime guy and is far taller than a normal human.
Flowery doesn't seem to know who he is, just what and who to base himself on in order to make Asgore happy. In the end, this method just doesn't work out for him, given that Asgore was never really interested in the first place. (ouch.)
This only strengthens his connections and paralells with Ralsei. Who are you? If not to be whatever someone else wants you to be?
And so Flowery tries to stretch himself thin, through even having MULTIPLE artstyles and designs. His overworld sprite, his face portrait, his anime design, and the fact he switches between voice clips and Deltarune style voice blips.
He has different appearances in different situations. I like when characters have an inconsistent design like this. Especially for a character like him. Maybe the inconsistency is his fault.
He doesn't know who he is. It's his first time truly LIVING! And so given he was a "nobody" originally, a "useless flower" in his eyes, he tries to be perfect, to be everything at once. Which sadly, only makes him come off as obnoxious, overbearing, and annoying.
But that's the thing, Flowery is SO sincere most of the time, so enthusiastic about being alive! His anime sequence is literally about him smiling big at the camera, in the most moe fucking pose you can imagine.
As silly and very clearly jokey it is, he's sincerely happy to be alive, even if he went about pleasing Asgore and keeping their dreams alive in a flawed way.
Is he always honest and innocent? No, absolutely not lmao. He can be petty, passive aggressive, and get really laser focused on the wrong ideas. And that's great! It's what made him so intriguing, and I really did need time to truly appreciate his character. (I admittedly was quite harsh to him during my first playthrough but yknow lol.)
Flowery is great testament to Toby being able to write goofy gimmick characters with tons of depth underneath. And I'm glad I can really, PROPERLY appreciate him as a character.
Also he's like... really trans coded with the way Toby talks about him. Even chose his own name over "Gold", similar to Seth. Him and Ralsei continue to be more similar than maybe either of them realise. <3

I hope you're all enjoying chapter 5! This game means a lot to all of us, and even though its sad it will end, I genuinely cannot wait to see how this wonderful story concludes!
