An illustration i did a few months ago of another one of my DnD characters, meet Kwee-Kwee, an owlfolk, cleric of life and moon priest (he worships Séluné, the Moon Goddess).
His real name is Kheowyn, but when he tried to tell Emen the half-orc, she only understood something like "cui-cui" (french), bird sounds. So she named him Kwee-Kwee. And she never asked him to write his name down, so he never did. Same for the other members of the group they later met. He got used to his nickname anyway.
He's considered as a mute but actually isn't. He never has said a word in 60 years of existence and doesn't know how to talk. He only uses sign language to express himself.
He's considered as a social weirdo because of his lack of manners and his ignorance of society codes.
He doesn't understand what gender is. As a doctor, he knows the physical differences, but socially it makes no sense to him.
Séluné is everything to him. He's nothing without her and he'd rather die than live in a world where she isn't shining in the sky.
He's 2m10 (6.9 feet i guess ?) tall.
All he can remember from his first days as a newborn is the forest on top of a mountain where he was about to live as an hermit for the next 60 years. Guided by the light of the moon, he walked to an old and forgotten temple. Grateful and still a very small chick, he did his best to restore the place on his own. It took him several years, and dedicated himself to the goddess.
At first, life was hard, he mostly ate roots and worms, didn't know how to use his wings and didn't know how to talk or read. But as long as he could see the light of Séluné, he was happy. He's not exactly a mute since he can make bird sounds but he still doesn't know how to talk properly and only use sign language. There are only weird sounds coming out of his mouth when he tries to say a few words in common language, and the very few people he met laughed at him, so he stopped.
He never encountered anyone of his kind, all he knows of his species, is his reflection. As an hermit, he almost never saw anyone in 60 years of life. Very occasional travelers ended up in his temple after being lost, and thanks to them, in exchange of a shelter for some nights, food and help, they taught him how to read and write, with a lot of patience. He was finally able to read the dusty books of the temple, learned about plants, and after a lot of practice, learned their use. He became a decent healer. And when he didn't know how to use something properly, Séluné's blessing was there for him.
He was living a quiet life, dedicating every single day of his existence to Séluné, when one day, a wounded half-orc named Emen arrived at his temple. He didn't know at first, but she was being chased by bandits she had offended (she beat them up). He offered her shelter, healed her, unaware that his life was about to change for ever. A few days later, the bandits found the temple where she was hiding, and Emen took Kwee-Kwee with her to prevent his death, leaving his home to the bandits wrath. The last image he has of his beloved temple, was a intense fire, burning 60 years of his existence to ashes.

He can be considered as a social weirdo because of his lack of manners and his ignorance of society codes. Which happens when you've been an hermit for 60 years.
