He leans his weight against the bars with his shoulder, looking down at Lucien with heavy eyes. He hates the way he's made to feel transparent, the way those piercing blues were always able to break down his words, see right through them. Spoken or written. It's somehow less intimate when the words are on paper. When he can avoid coming face to face with this scrutiny. It's as if his bones, themselves, are on display. "Michigan." The word comes out in an exhale of an alcohol-tainted whisper, a confession. It was unintentional, but he's stifled by this whole thing. By the sight of Loo locked up in this fucking cell, by the notion that he's going to be rotting in one for a while. By the idea that he could have done something. In reality, he probably would've just killed the bastard, himself, and then where would they be? He'd still be in that cell. Would Loo come to visit him with the same remorse in his eyes? You know better, Jack.

"Condition of my bail. Edie and I-" it's not often he's unable to finish his sentences in any sense other than a grammatical failure (so he'd been told, so he'd laughed off; periods and commas went where he damn well wanted them to go and had no business elsewhere). "We're gonna get married." He can't look at Lucien anymore, can't face the reality of his own life reflected in the reaction of his friend - the best one he's got who's not dead. They were gonna see the world, sail the seas, go on an adventure. "Why couldn't we just leave?"

“ i don’t suppose you have come to read me something you wrote? “ he glances up from the spot on the floor in his cell, legs pulled to his chest & his eyes falling upon the figure of the man who he is proud to call his best friend ; though, he doesn’t know if jack still considers loo to be his own. maybe it’s wishful thinking, but loo somehow figures that it’s a possibility that jack doesn’t hate him for accidentally getting him arrested. a possibility.

It's not the words that startle him. He's gotten used to those, with time. So little of it. Fuck, it was just yesterday they were running the streets saturated in reckless abandon and purpose; what purpose, he couldn't say now.

But hell, he'd known at the time. To see something like Loo (someone, he's constantly reminding himself; Loo is a force of a human being and somewhere along the way that gets convoluted, hard to translate) behind bars was unnatural. A tiger on display. "I came here to say goodbye."

The words don't come out right, that's not why he's fucking here. Like some kind of courtesy call, an obligatory Christmas card with an unhappy family smile. A still photograph of shuffling feet and anxious limbs. He's here to apologize. This is the end of the line. It isn't by choice.
