there's a minor translation mistake in the dr:t 2 summary doc
okay so to be fair, i hesitate to put "mistake," because this translation IS only a summary. and i am glad it exists. however i also hesitate to put "minor" because i think even in a summary, this specific line should have been included, because its omission massively changes the context of the preceding line. so here i am, posting about it
so, i was looking for stuff about the "reliance." i was Also looking for stuff specifically mentioning kijo. so of course, it brought me to a part in the novel where nanamura, a detective one of the siblings hired to solve all the murders, is explaining something yoru, one of the other siblings did. her "twin sister" asa has been revealed to be a doll, and yoru staged "asa's" murder.
the details as to how she did this aren't relevant right now-- what is relevant is that yoru saw another murder, and realized that the "reliance" kijo is looking for is an unconventional, complicated mystery. THIS is the passage about it in the summary translation
so, what nanamura says here means "you're on the right track, but your idea was bad, so kijo's not impressed." i.e. if the mystery HAD been better, kijo WOULD have been impressed
this is just straight up. not the line from the original novel. i managed to find a japanese pdf of the novel, and i was mainly going through it because i wanted to check out the original text and ask my fiance, who can translate japanese, to go anal on specific word choice. and i found out that there is a line AFTER what nanamura says in this screenshot that did not make it into the summary translation.... and it really should have, because it changes what he says about the "reliance."
a disclaimer: the lines i'm going to show you are machine translated. HOWEVER 1) i did have my fiance look over the machine translation and the original japanese text, and he says that the machine translation is correct in that That Is What The Line Says. specific word choice might be incorrect, but the overall meaning of the line is correct. 2) i made sure google translate was on "classic" and not their dumb bullshit ~improved with gemini~ nonsense setting, and 3) i'm gonna give you the original japanese line too
so, this is the line in question in the original novel:
ćć ćå¤ćÆčŖćæéćććę¢åµćÆå·é
·ć«äŗćććēē¼ē¹ćÆććć£ććććå„ę³ććØćć¦ćÆäøęµć ćć¾ććć©ć”ćć«ććå½äø»ć®ćäæ”é ¼ććÆććć®ēØ®ć®ćć®ć§ćÆćŖćć ććć
and translated, it says this:
"But Yoru misread the situation," the detective said coldly. "Her initial idea was good, but as an 'unconventional' plot, it was third-rate. Well, in any case, the head of the household's 'trust' wouldn't be of that nature."
(a note: "reliance" [äæ”é ¼] can also be translated as "trust")
WITH this line added, now nanamura is saying "not only is the mystery third-rate, but that's not even what the reliance actually is." the reliance IS NOT "a complicated mystery" at all, and its inefficacy is not why kijo was unimpressed. in fact it doesn't even say anything about whether or not he was impressed! so now the line goes from "your murder isn't weird enough and thats why your father is unimpressed" to "i don't think he wants you to kill each other wacky style, lol." and it made me go a little insane because ive been trying to find out ANYTHING i can about the reliance, and this "clue" as to its nature... is not a clue. it's irrelevant. and ive also been trying to find out Anything i can about kijo, and this is also not a clue towards him (that he's the kind of guy to look at murder and go "hmm. mid," and demand something complicated and/or cruel as the main goal for the competition. which does change some things)
anyway yeah. i don't really know how to conclude. what the fuck is the reliance
