Current Project: April is the Cruelest Month!

Greetings! We're Lock and Pick, two flavors of one mind, and our pronouns are a lie! Welcome to our Dangan blog. Another local Ouma and Komaeda stan, as you can probably tell. We won't subscribe to the cringe culture about it. We primarily ship Oumami, Ounami, and Oumota here, but are a multishipper at heart and like to obsess over narrative nuance and character study while inventing fucked up little Situations. We're a bit all over the place.

We do writing and play around with AUs, and have a few muses who are eager to interact. Most of them are Kokichis from various AUs, some subtly different and some drastically different. There are a few other fun guys mixed in, including a few flavors of Komaeda, so check out the full list and feel free to drop them a line if one catches your eye. I'm sure they'd like that.

They'll be making posts of their own on this blog on occasion, using this blog as if they were all sharing it with me. Most notably you'll see them occasionally write mini essays on topics they want to talk about or that are requested of them. See the FAQ for more details. Other than that, we'll mostly just be reblogging I think. If I ever manage to finish any fics, I'll also post about them. Have fun I guess.

there's something about the phrasing here that just strikes me as a little.... something. not ODD per se but just a little. desperate? so, this is before makoto accuses him of having everything handed to him, but we KNOW how he reacts to that. it's something he's genuinely really sensitive about

so like. the usage of "now you understand, right?" and that he's not "merely" the child of modern day nobility. its like. hes kind of setting makoto up to agree with him. because all this bragging in his ftes.... for one, his accomplishments are kind of all he knows how to talk about, because no one previously in his life cared AT ALL about anything else about him. and for two, while he is confident in himself, that confidence is selective and fragile. he has to CONSTANTLY reinforce its existence because it's barely there, like a mirage; true confidence wouldnt need someone to rely on others agreeing that he is confident/smart/accomplished etc. and true confidence wouldnt hinge on largely, things byakuya DOES rather than who he IS as a person

which is i think why its a lot more obvious here than normal. this is about him as a person, not his accomplishments which can be measured by a metric of Good versus Bad. he's also saying "look at my accomplishments. now agree with me that i'm good, ok? i'm not merely the child of modern day nobility. i'm more than that."

it's just a little bit desperate. like he's aching for an answer. like the only way he can concieve of being friends with someone is to show himself off as a Good Product and a Hard Worker and a Smart Ultimate and a Confident Heir. like he needs makoto to agree with him that he's good and worthy and more than just a nepo baby. because if makoto doesn't agree with byakuya then byakuya won't believe it either. he has no sense of internal self worth because all his life his worth was in fact measured by those accomplishments he keeps boasting about

like i do think he is legitimatley trying to get makoto to like him here, especially as the ftes go on and byakuya stops talling about himself and starts tentatively asking about "the 99%." he just doesn't know how to connect with people because he was never taught to, and maybe even actively discouraged from doing so. he wants people to like him he needs people to like him, or at the VERY least agree that he's confident and secure in himself. but if someone (makoto) is repeatedly nice to him.... he starts to get a little desperate. as shown by the fact that he tries to pay makoto to be around him, both in thh and in the ending of school mode (where it is NOT a test, so he was BSing in his fte lmfaaoo)

like. it just feels desperate. because it is, in a kind of subtle way, but it is. he is.

Gosh you know we tend to think about Teruteru's whole lying thing surrounding the urban aesthetic and looking important but in a way I guess we could also see it from a lens of having these tragedies as their catalyst, as in, the lie beginning also with how momma will be okay all the time

Teruteru's dynamic with lying is a strong component in Chapter 1 with what the way he's immediately trying to deny reality the moment he's thrust into a killing game, but an important part about this whole dynamic to begin with is how it ties into one of the themes that will be brought up throughout the game: the duality between belief and doubt.

Hajime:

The logic being that to deny something so strongly, it would be that it had an actual tangible effect. If you truly didn't believe it, why would you go out of your way to keep denying it or wanting to confirm it? My personal thoughts on this logic aside, this dichotomy is something that comes up from time to time throughout the game (Chapters 3 and 5 pop to mind here especially strongly), and the same way Nagito also first yeets on us the themes relating to not knowing everything about people, Teruteru also first yeets on us a belief so strong that it turns around into denial, in the same way Danganronpa seems to like to address emotional dichotomy and different contradicting layers that make up human nature. Which is to say that Teruteru's backstory and surrounding emotional turmoil isn't just there for the sake of it but is likely to have in that sense thematic purpose

Like, no this character isn't using a pacifier or gripping onto a plushie or padded or wearing childing clothing, but they are hiding behind their most trusted person in the friend group, either a parental figure or close friend, when things feel too big and new.

They aren't crying out for mommy or daddy, or throwing a tantrum, but they're sobbing to themselves in the middle of the night, clutching their pillow like a person, because everything feels too big and too much

They aren't burying themselves in pacifiers, teethers, or plushies, but they're chewing on their shirt or hand when they get anxious and hugging their pillow to their chest like a lifeline

one of the reasons why Columbo is so funny is because he will get on his suspect's nerves sooo badly and then the suspect cannot do anything about it because Columbo will go "I'm just a little guy and it's my birthday! I'm just a little birthday boy!" with the suspect and Columbo both knowing full well that Columbo is lying but the suspect cannot say a word about it not being Columbo's birthday due to the social conventions surrounding them and the fact that they are indeed guilty of murder

i find this part of danganronpa: togami to be SO INTERESTING vis a vis byakuya's philosophy, ESPECIALLY the highlighted parts. for one, he's very cognizant of AND OPEN ABOUT the fact that "the game" of life is inherently unfair, something that can be gleamed by how he talks in his free time events but is made explicit here, which is interesting considering pretty much every rich person ever.... does not talk like this. we've all heard the platitudes of "we all have the same time in the day," the myth of amazon and such being started in garages without mentioning the MAASIVE loans the founders' parents gave them, and the general touting of meritocracy. byakuya as an affluent person aknowleding, on ANY level, that the game is inherently unfair and rigged, is strikingly countercultural to the culture of affluence he belongs to and is supposed to EMBODY, even

and on top of that: he also dislikes when people use the unfairness of The Game to avoid playing at all. but, crucially, he says "it's not like i don't understand where they're coming from." it's more complicated than simple superiority-- his dislike of this behavior comes from a place of understanding. he, too, has been at a disadvantage as the youngest member of his family and being of such low pedigree that he was hierarchially worthless. but his point seems to be that, just as there are no guaranteed win conditions, there are also no guaranteed losing conditions. like he said, someone at the bottom rung can turn it around very late in life. and some people try and can't succeed at all, yes, but i get the sense that he would at least respect their efforts. they TRIED to play The Game instead of looking at the insurmountable odds and going "well, my chances are slim, so might as well not try." because THAT is the most surefire way to ensure that nothing happens. once you believe you have no agency, you really won't have any agency at all

and of course he's saying all this to spur people on to save his ass. but i do think it's a very interesting look on his philosophy, especially contrasted with impostor's world domination proclimation that started the novel, which highlights this disparity as well HOWEVER actively mocks and derides those disenfranchised by it

the proclimation is honestly written in a way people would think is "byakuyaesque" wrt that surface level way he's seen most of the time... however, the real byakuya gets mad when blue ink says it sounds like him!

because that's not how he thinks at all, and the person closest to him should know better
